Accelerating the accelerated rebuild with cap space

Created by: jonh514
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2022
Published: Aug. 12, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This post is predicated on the assumption that Price will never play again, and the Habs are using that space to accelerate the rebuild.

Holloway, Guhle, Barron, Niemela, Primeau and Pelletier all play in Laval next season to help the Rocket win the cup

Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Anderson, Josh ($2,750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Oilers get a top 6 forward for the next 5 years at a significant discount. Habs retain 50% for 5 years because they believe in their ability to develop the players coming back into future top 6

Value is the best player right now + Cap relief now and for 4 more years
2.
MTL
  1. Holl, Justin
  2. Kerfoot, Alexander
  3. Niemelä, Topi
Additional Details:
Habs get Niemela as the prize in this deal, a RHD prospect with true NHL upside
Holl & Kerfoot are the 2 players I most often see the Leaf fans trying to cap dump, but I am open to other cap dump options
TOR
  1. Dadonov, Evgeni ($2,500,000 retained)
  2. Norlinder, Mattias
  3. Ylönen, Jesse
  4. 2023 4th round pick (VGK)
  5. 2023 4th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Leafs get Dadonov at a discount to play in their top 6 (consistent 20+ goal scorer) who is not a defensive liability
Leafs get Ylonen who is NHL ready and can play bottom 6 (maybe top 6 upside, but I doubt it at this point)
Norlinder is a bit of a project since they lose organizational depth at D
Throwing in a few picks cause the Habs have too many future contracts in their organization as it is
3.
MTL
  1. Monahan, Sean
  2. Pelletier, Jakob
Additional Details:
Habs get Pelletier as a future top 6 they can develop
Habs take Monahan as a cap dump
CGY
  1. Dvorak, Christian
Additional Details:
Flames get an Elite #3 or decent #2 center on a good deal

Hard no from edmonton, Anderson is overrated, and is a prime candidate for a steep regression

I doubt any team accepts those offers. For those returns Leafs won't part with Niemela, Flames won't part with Pelletier and Oilers aren't giving up Holloway and PoolParty even with that retention.

Not sure how realistic this is but I really like it (except giving up Ylonen but I also know nothing about Niemela)

Nothing in for the Leafs this season except for maybe a bit of cap saving.
Why do Habs fans overate Anderson so much? PJ for Anderson retained might be equal trade, but to except Oilers to add a good prospect is obscene. Gotta think Flames stick it out with Monahan for one season rather take on the middling Dvorak for four.

Isn't Knies top prospect followed by Robertson and Sandin?

I can appreciate the effort put into this trade.

This trade saves TOR 3M right now, Dadonov replaces Kerfoot in the top 6, and there is enough money left over to get Sandin signed.

I'm hesitant on getting right of Niemela. There is not a lot of organizational depth at RD aside from him and Villeneuve. TOR would be fine for next year at the RD spot, but anything past that is a crap shoot if this trade is made.

You've got me thinking about it at least. Doesn't usually happen with TOR/MTL trades.

I don't see Calgary trading Pelletier. Tes we are getting rid of Monahan, but I would rather use that cap for an upgrade next off-season

There's no way Calgary brings in Dvorak, Monahan is off the books this season Dvorak is a middling C with horrid possession numbers, if Monahan regresses because of injury he's an LTIR candidate, Pelletier is NHL ready and near league minimum in cap. I would be shocked if the Flames did Monahan for Dvorak 1 for 1 at this point with the circumstances.

It's always tough proposing TOR/MTL trades as I get evicerated no matter what. I tried to balance value for the win-now teams vs futures for the Habs that are fair.

Some fans over-value their prospects... The biggest asset right now in the NHL is cap space. There is no guarantee regarding Niemela but I really believe in him. Still a risk for the Habs as well.

No way Calgary does this. Am endlessly amazed at how all Habs fans think Dvorak is >>>> than Monahan. The kid has never broken 40 points!

I agree that SM has been ass lately with all of his injuries but even crippled he wasn't far off Dvorak's production the last couple years.

If SM is healthy this year maybe he can bounce back as often happens in contract years. If not then we cut him loose at the end of the season.

I would much rather bet on that, than give up Pelletier to save $2M for 1 year and then have $4.5M tied up for a third line center for the next two years after!

Alright sir. If you do not believe in the player I totally understand. I don't think the majority of the Game around the league share your perspective.

Pelletier is a bit of a stretch, but Calgary honestly doesn't have much in the way of prospects to interest a rebuilding team. It was rumoured that Pelletier was going to be included in a trade for Chiarot last TDL hence why I'm including him here

Sorry sir. It was my understanding he was kinda too injured to play for a contender. I was thinking of him as a cap dump. If not true, I get why you might feel offended by my proposal. Really no offence meant.

Even if that were true, great 3rd liners make a lot more than 2.75M don't they?

The player I really want in the deal is Holloway. I would gladly swap Pulj for Foegele if that gets the deal done.

Dive into his metrics a little bit, he'd be an awful fit on the Flames, Calgary could use 6.375M of Monahan's cap space at the end of the year or be tied to a middling Dvorak for 3 more, hence the Flames don't make the move 1 for 1 in my mind.

Lebrun's quote about Pelletier in a Chiarot trade was "My feeling is that the Habs have a strong interest in Flames prospect Jakob Pelletier, drafted in the first round in 2019" A lot of fan blogs and posts say there was rumours but it was pretty clear from Treliving at the deadline that Pelletier has a future with Calgary. Never a real concrete rumour.

Just to clarify your position sir:

If Anderson was available as a UFA right now and you could sign him for 5 years at 2.75M/season without giving up anything in return, are you saying the player is not worth having at that price and cannot help the Oilers?

Or are you saying the asking price is too high?

You are a million miles from getting Holloway.

Puljujarvi > Anderson, you'd have to add Caufield in order to get Holloway. Good luck.
