Lou Does Something

Created by: EmilieCastonguay
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 18, 2022
Published: Aug. 19, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The thing is, we don't know what Lou actually did, because of his silly 'cone-of-silence' rule.

Let's get into the heart of the team construction below.

1.) Garland takes his elite 5v5 scoring and 'swiss-army knife' skills to OTT. Jacob Bernard-Docker is young and still has top-4 potential. VAN can ease him into a rotation on the bottom pairing. The key is the return of the '23 1st (top 8 protected). In the event that OTT climbs out of the basement, this pick comes to VAN. In the event that OTT stumbles, the pick defers to '24.

2.) COL trades one pending UFA for another. VAN retains 50% of the salary on JT Miller to make money balance out and to further prompt COL to include their top D prospect not named Bowen Byram and the '23 1st. Everyone wins. COL gets more scoring punch (at a discount) and the ability to further balance out their lineup as Kadri signed with the Flames. VAN gets the 3c they thought they were signing in Dickinson.

3.) WPG: the trade really works out like this.

Travis Dermott for WPG's '24 3rd
Future Considerations for Jason Dickinson, Jett Woo and VAN's '23 2nd

4.) DiPietro goes as close to home as possible for BUF's '23 5th. His career is salvageable, but not in Abbotsford.

Evan Rodrigues signs prior to the start of the season on a 'show-me' deal.
Tucker Poolman goes on LTIR to start the season due to recurring migraines. Hope he heals up for his own well-being.

COL isn’t trading for Miller. They have zero chance of re-signing him. Need all the upcoming elc contracts that can contribute which would be Behrens, and they aren’t trading their only pick in the first 5 rounds of consecutive drafts. COL to VAN doesn’t work for COL.

Drop Dermott and the 3rd and the Jets might do it.

You can just bury Dermott in the minors, his cap hit wouldn't be much on the Nucks, maybe someone claims him on waivers.

Surprisingly Ottawa won't have the cap space, or desire to trade their 2023 1st, for Garland. They'll need JBD next year more than Garland.

Personally i think its what the contenders do to put them over the top. It's going to be a rental for sure but it gives us another weapon upfront to help replace kadri and burkys additional scoring. Our window is right now, the player drafted with this pick won't be ready for another 3 years and behrens won't be cracking the roster next year either so it really doesn't take away from our time in the win now mode and gives us an excellent shot of going back to back with the cup

Buffalo already has 4 goalie prospects 23 and under with NHL potential, DiPietro probably wouldn't have much of a chance with Levi, UPL, Portillo and Leinonen is the pipeline already.

Toronto might be a better fit, but I'm not sure how their goalie prospects look.

I totally understand this line of thinking but the FO has a philosophy they're following. The trade where the Avs brought in Kuemper for a 1st and good prospect was out-of-character for the Avs FO - they got caught off-guard with Gru leaving and had to make a desperation play knowing they probably couldn't (or didn't want to) re-sign DK. I don't think they'll do that sort of thing again if they do go looking for more scoring or a 2C; I believe they're going to rely more heavily on their high-end defense then try to find some value in the trade market around the deadline that isn't too expensive to acquire and is more likely to not be a rental.

I would think, especially in this draft, they'll want to actually make a selection so they have just a bit more in the pipeline that can maybe plug inevitable holes. They aren't just thinking about back-to-back Cups, they're thinking about how to fully utilize their core to be legit contenders for the next 5-8 years; we're talking about the difference between a brief powerhouse and a dynasty. Trading valuable assets for rentals burns hot and fast so I just can't see them making an impetuous, short-term move like this one for JTM; just looking at the Lehkonen and Manson trades, they clearly wanted guys they would be able to keep.

I agree with what you've said and with us keeping the guys from last year our top 2 lines on forward and defense is pretty much set for the next few years depending on the toews contract extension. With that being said i think the rental market completely revolves around newhook. If he has taken another step here and is ready to actually be the 2C this season there is no need to bring in miller and we'd probily get more depth like you mentioned. But if he still isn't ready and they stick to that philosophy you mentioned would it be newhook who gets the trade for someone who has a little term and is capable of shouldering the 2C role for the next half decade then? 2C is a huge position for us and i think we've all forgotten a bit what it was like not having one there until we got kadri

2C is very important but Newhook can be seen as the 2C of the future but also not take a big step forward this season - you don't have to jettison a guy if he doesn't live up to expectations or what you'd like him to be at the age of 21. It's hard to say just how patient they should be with him since their window is open right now; I don't know what the answer to that question is. But the window is bigger than just this coming season so, if it were me in charge, I'm not trading for a pure rental like JTM - it just doesn't make sense to me.

As for Toews, is it realistic to think the Avs could be paying Makar $9M, Toews $8-9M and Byram potentially $7M+ all at the same time, even with a higher cap? In that scenario, Girard is almost certainly gone and they're filling out their D with cast-offs or journeymen and possibly Behrens. It seems most likely that Toews is gone one way or another sometime after this coming season.
