Isles easily decline. Barzal is an elite young forward. What your asking for is an easy no

    Detroit passes.

Not even close for Matthew Barzal, If Lou moved Barzal that offer would be blown away.

And FYI both Barzal and DeBrincat will get closer to 8 x $9,500,000 Neither will sign for what you're offering.

And sorry a 20 man roster with less than $3,000 in salary cap isn't sustainable over an 82 game schedule.

no part of that package for barzal aside from maybe batherson appeals but i notice you threw both potential hc suspects in there, which is obviously an issue

This is absolutely dreadful for Ottawa

Moves like this would only precipitate the next rebuild

Plus, Sens have zero need for Barzal with Stutzle, Norris, Pinto and even Greig. Acquiring Barzal to put Stutzle on the wing would be Milbury like level GMing.

And they're not going to trade Joseph for a 2nd, they basically chose him over keeping either Nick Paul or Connor Brown long term for more AAV

Really? I'm not trading Batherson and his contract straight up for Barzal

If Batherson ad Formenton are guilty then they have zero value and won't get traded. Maybe to the jail next door.

People are getting way too stuck into name recognition. Very high probability that Batherson outscores Barzal going forward, for like 3-4 M$ less per year.

lol I am not giving up Batherson and what is worth 3 firsts for Barzal

    That's insane

Barzal took a team friendly deal on his last contract. His QO on his next one is 10 mil and his deal will start there. If the Isles were to move Barzal, that's the why. Could say the same for DeBrincat and his 9 mil QO too.

Comparing Batherson to Barzal is a classic example of fans being unable to look at the full picture. Batherson plays on a line with Norris and Tkachuck and he’s found success there. But Barzal’s microstats are among the best in the league and they have been for years. That being said the isles might have had the worst top line wingers in the entire NHL last year.

Even Arizona had Keller and Schmaltz…. The isles have the ghost of Zack Parise. You aren’t gonna produce as much with Zack Parise on your wing…. Not sure how people don’t get that.

Isles fans will lose their **** if they lose another top line center. That would be two in five years….

His QO is 8.4 mill, not 10 mill. He will likely get 8.5-9 x 8

Not sure how you figure that. QOs are determined by the base salary of the last year of the previous deal, with some padding if its a small amount which isn't applicable here. Barzal's base salary this season is $10 mil, he doesn't have any signing bonus' or other things that would bring it down. This would make his Qualifying Offer next season $10 mil. His contract was structured to make sure he gets paid on the next one and he will get paid.

I see also Anders Lee, Josh Bailey, Kyle Palmieri...

    https://frozenpool.dobbersports.com/players/mathew-barzal

Batherson was an offensive dynamo last season, it's Tkachuk and Norris who were lucky to play with him

Comparing Barzal to Batherson is a classic example of fans being unable to look at this ONE "microstat"> :

    Batherson : 5 years x $4,975,000

Barzal : 1 year x $7,000,000 (salary $10,000,000 which is far from ideal for a market like Ottawa) then RFA where he will make close to the DOUBLE of what Batherson makes. Let that sink in

Trading one of the biggest bargains in the NHL for the next 5 years to add yet another big contract that won't fit in the salary structure going forward would be extremely stupid.

Plus Sens need a PPG Right Winger wayyyyy more than a PPG center (even if it was years ago)

I have seen this movie a million times in the last 3 decades. People overrate name recognition like crazy, expect killer returns on every big name and when the reality happens, it's never even close to their deluded expectations. Funny movie though

Not about name recognition dude, it’s about Barzal’s ability as a player. Also the only top six winger you just listed was Anders Lee, who is more of a second liner anyway. And he can’t really skate that well with Barzal at five on five….

I'm not talking specifically about you, obviously I was talking in the last 30 years. I have seen the average hockey fan do that a million times.

That said, as good as Barzal ability is, the problem people have here is they have no idea how good Batherson is. He's 1 year younger and will make a LOT less during the next 5 seasons

No GM in their right mind would trade Batherson to get Barzal now, well unless they have a lot of cap space, are lacking costly players and really need a center.

I mean the disparity in talent is wider than you think imo. I recommend reading the all 3 zones article about him. Jfresh posted it a couple days ago.

lol I don't need Jfresh articles to understand/know hockey. I have played and followed the game the hardcore way for 30+ years.

I never said Barzal wasn't good (read again). Even if he is better, he is not 2 times better than Batherson who was a very late bloomer, not drafted in 2016 then picked in the 4th round by a scouting dept who prides itself on finding "obscure" gems. This is the only reason why Batherson is still underrated by some.

Plus all the other things I mentioned, like adding 3 first round pick quality assets, the absence of need for the Center position and the incapacity to add such a future AAV to the salary cap structure, etc

The Sens would decline this without even thinking.

potential legal issues aside, it makes no sense for either side. Isles don't have anyone who can confidently step into that 1C hole you're vacating (unless you're SUPER high on Aatu Raty making the leap as a 19 year old this year), and Ottawa has enough young C depth (Norris-Stutzle-Pinto) that it doesn't make a ton of sense for them to bring in another one - unless you're flipping one back out.

Exactly, the only way would have been to trade Stutzle to get Barzal. That would have meant that the Sens believe that Stutzle won't be better so instead of extending him to that future contract, trade him for a more proven guy who has some similarities and will fill the same role.

I played since I was six dude, and I’m not a big analytics guy. But it’s actually a pretty interesting read. It talks a lot about how many zone entries he creates and **** like that.

Seriously, if the Sens didn't have Stutzle, they would be after him if available. Maybe not at that price but replace Batherson by a guy like Pinto or Greig (who are both near untouchables by the way) for example and it makes more sense. The package would only be futures yeah.

    Pinto/Greig ~ 5-10th OA value
    Bernard-Docker ~ 25-30th OA value
    Formenton ~ 15th OA value
    2023 1st round pick (OTT) ~ 20th OA value*

If that's not a good package, not sure what would be

    * Approx. where the Sens would draft assuming they would have Barzal instead of 20 y/o Stutzle

My philosophy is that 9/10 times ur better off keeping ur young talent instead of trading for someone else’s. I completely agree Ottawa wouldn’t target him. That being said the article is a good read if you get a chance to look it up.
