Leafs can afford Nylander and Matthews have no idea where u got that

Nylander's comparables are in the 7.75-9mill range.

8.5Mill x 8 years is probs what he will get (Forsberg money)

You don't trade away the better player, when trying to win now. Cross that bridge next season, when there could be more suitors, or let him walk (hopefully with some playoff wins/cups).
Edit-- This is still IF you decide you can't re-sign him.

so the leafs wont be able to afford Nylander, but they'll be able to afford Vrana and Bertuzzi back to back?

I doubt he will settle for that. It will be 9+. He could put up 40 goals and 90 points this year. A team with lots of cap space will overpay for him imo.

Better to spread the money around. Bertuzzi's next contract will be similar to the one he has now. And ditto for Vrana. But the main component of this deal is Kasper.

except that in 2 years , both vrana and bertuzzi will be making about 7.5 each, Nylander will be making about 8.5 max. So now they have at least 6 mill less in cap space and you have to sign Kasper off his ELC.
There are reasons to explore something like this, but it isnt cap space

Call it, no thanks. This trade makes absolutely zero sense from Detroit’s perspective. How you even thought this could work is beside me.

That is terrible logic. So what if the Leafs can't afford Nylander in two years. They can't afford Bertuzzi next seasons and why would they want Vrana at over 5m for two seasons?

The worst logic "trading a player before he leaves for UFA". There are about 3 UFAs per team. So you are saying all 100 NHLers should be traded in their final season. Of course who are they traded to because you're saying no one wants upcoming UJFAs.

Forsberg got a sweetheart deal which, Nashville seems to get away with a lot more than other teams for some reason.

With the cap increases and the absolutely lethal shot Nylander has, he’s like a more well rounded version of Patrik Laine. He will easily get $9m+.

When Forsberg signed 8.5mill x 8 years he had 42 goals and assists for 84 points in 69 gp

Nylander is on pace for 44 goals and 46 assists or 90 points in 82 games. So how does 2 more goals and 4 more assists in 13 more games = 9+ mill lul

He wont have anyone on par with Matthews to play with so knowing him hes gonna stay and 8.5mill x 8 years is the highest. If he gets back to back 100 point seasons maybe can push 9m but doubtful.

Philly easily declines. Engvall and Kerfoot are both cap dumps for Philly and 1st and Voit isn't enough

The salary cap is expected to go up by a substantial amount between now and when both Matthews and Nylander's contracts are up since it's the same off-season when they'll both need extensions. That's not even mentioning if you look at Nylander's cap hit right now (7M) the Leafs can afford to raise it to however much of a raise he wants (Around 9M maybe?). They can get that money by not resigning a guy like Engvall for example.

Nylander more than likely walks in 2 years, No way in hell are we trading Bertuzzi, Kasper and Vrana for Nylander. And if the rumors are true that Nylanders camp wants $9,000,000+ on his next contract. There's absolutely no way Yzerman pays that.

laugh If Bertuzzi and Vrana settle for the same contracts they've now, they'd be both staying in Detroit not going to Toronto.

Detroit is not a buyer this year and isn't trading their only centre prospect for a winger let alone adding two top-6 wingers.

Simple. Forsberg signed in a lower cap ceiling time. Percentage wise, 9 million for Nylander will likely be less than 8.5 for Forsberg when his deal was signed. It's like saying Mackinnon shouldn't have gotten more than McDavid despite the contract signing time differences.
