So when has a rental ever been traded for this much?

Hawks won't or shouldn't retain, McCabe's contract is fair.

But not everyone can afford a fair contract. If Mcdavid was getting traded his contract is more than fair but some retention would likely have to happen.

He makes $4M, if a team can't fit that in well then no trades are gonna happen.

Thats where teams need to "play ball" and take some short term cap back and the team sending it shouldn't have to compensate the team to take an expiring player or a guy with only one more year. For example if the Oilers traded for McCabe the Hawks should just take back Puljujarvi or Foegele to make it work, Hawks wouldn't have to qualify Puljujarvi if they didn't want to and Foegele could be a player for them next season, far better then retaining and more realistic.

Long term retention rarely happens unless its when a team really wants to get rid of a player like the OEL and Lucic trades, McCabe isn't a player that a team wants to get rid of.

Most teams cannot fit that in with the salary cap and most teams aren't going to create more holes in their lineup to fit in one player. As much as that McCabe trade would be nice for edmonton, those players going the other way are what we have in the bottom six as of now. The bottom six is already a slight problem so sending two guys out leaves a bigger issue. If an injury comes up we need those type of guys to be available. If Chicago added Lafferty and someone else to replace them then maybe. IMO retention is the most realistic option even if it costs the team more.

Can pick up other bottom six replacement level players for late round picks or on waivers, seriously a top 4 dman is WAY more valuable then average bottom sixers. The Hawks could probably throw in some cheap bottom six guys and you wouldn't notice a difference.

Again, long term retention just isn't very realistic.

Being good isn't all about goals and points. Watch some hockey and quit making a fool of yourself.

Good gawd some absolutely ridiculous takes on here.

Larkin would need a lot of term to get that kind of return.

Well of course there is the leaf tax that needs to be paid. Anyone's return has to be increased by 80% when it involves the Leafs. Or lowered by 200% if it's a good player leaving TO. Larkin would get more than Nylander would right now on this site.

Didn't know Wings fan were more delusional than leafs fans. Larkin has never been PPG in his entire career.... he's not returning that much

It's because leaf fans over value their players by a mile and undervalue everyone elses.

Hawks would want a first sooner than 2025, so If you insist on having it be so far away you must include a 2023 3rd round pick.

Gotta agree with the other Hawks fans here. I don't think KD's interested in picks in 2025. You'll have to compensate them more to wait.

If you’re trolling then excellent work, if you’re serious you need to re evaluate. No rental will go for that, that’s more than the Chychrun ask. Meier is a better fit and RFA controlled and the reported ask is very similar to the Horvat deal. You won’t find a rental that fetched that much cause it’s not even in the ballpark.
