Off-Season Trade

Team: 2022-23 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 10, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I keep hearing Girard being talked about on 32 thoughts. I think the Jackets should take a hard look. He has a similar window to Laine, this piece gets them one step closer to glory.

I assume Colorado would be looking for prospects, picks and/or good contracts

Girard slots across from Peeke on the 2nd d-pair. Not sure if this is an overpay or underpay, depends how they value Dumais

I would not be against it for the right price. Gavrikov is likely gone, and I think Peeke can step into that physical second pair role next year, but we will need to find a good puck mover to pair with him. Girard could be that guy.

I also wouldn’t be opposed to Jarmo going after Ekholm or Provorov, although after the whole pride night fiasco, the team might not be willing to deal with that PR.

yeah we're hoping Bean or Blankenburg can be that guy.. and maybe they can but may as well use the assets we've got to upgrade. No sense in waiting and I think it fits what Colorado needs to do cap wise

Girard will be victim of a cap crunch, but I dont see this trade as one that temps them. They need fwd depth more than another dman and futures.

I wouldn't be trading Dumais right now. He's far too interesting of a prospect to trade for temporary LD depth. He on pace for a scoring rate that hasn't been seen from an 18 year old in the last 20 years in the Q (not counting Crosby since he didn't play as an 18 year old). He's absolutely worth keeping in the system to see how his development plays out. At worst you have a 3rd round pick fizzle out. At best you might end up with a top 6 scoring winger.

I guess I don’t understand why CBJ would be looking to move on from Boqvist yet? Young guy who expires as an RFA.

I would be interested in this package if I’m COL. Clears $2.4M to get additional top 6 support.

Jiricek seems to have made Boqvist expendable. They're going to have Jiricek, Gudbranson, Blankenburg, Peeke and Boqvist going into next year for RD. They've also got Werenski and Bean on the left side who are also more offensively minded so Boqvist just ends up being the guy most of us are speculating as the odd man out.

I think if you take dumais out the jackets would be tempted. I think if the jackets added a late first from a potential Gavrikov trade to this package they could get chychrun

Yeah, I'd rather have Girard though, I like the 4 more years before UFA as opposed to 2. I think the Jarmo would like to use that 1st. He's said time and time again he isn't going to make a big move for a guy who will be gone in a couple years. We don't need Panarin 2.0 and I don't think that Chychrun make the Jackets a contender right away so why take the risk and make it a 2 year window? I feel like 4 years fits the bill a bit better

That’s underwhelming to say the least for Girard. Boqvist is a right handed offensive dman that is hurt and not producing offense. Plus COL has plenty of those guys on the roster. Dumais is interesting but does his game translate to the NHL? Girard is a 20 minute a game top 4 all situation dman, it’s going to take more than an interesting prospect, a guy running out of runway and a 2nd for him.

I think his value is just going to keep going down similar to how Bean's has. He can't stay healthy and he's not physical. I think his value is a lot lower than people might think

COL isn’t doing that with Dumais in it.

Do you mean Colorado or Columbus? I would think that Colorado would want Dumais

Honestly I wouldn’t make that trade unless it’s a sweetheart offer like Foudy, Boqvist, Voracek (assuming his career is over and he is LTIR space for Colorado) and a 2nd for Girard. Laine is happy in Columbus, Gaudreau is signed Long term, Werenski is 5 more years. I’m just not sure Columbus needs to start pushing all the chips in yet. Maybe Bean can step into the 2nd pair and Berni or Christianson can step up, also who knows how long Mateychuck will take, he could be NHL ready in 2 years.

Imo I wouldn’t make a trade, but I’d go after a player like Gostisbehere or Graves as a UFA and keep the extra assets.

I definitely prefer this kind of approach for the Jackets right now. Keep on the path and see how the prospects play out before they start trying to fill gaps long term. Unless there's another crazy opportunity like a Gaudreau signing then there's no need for big splashes right now.

He's saying even with Dumais in it the Avs decline. Take Dumais out, as suggested by the person he was responding to, and it's a double no. Not enough quality there and no young cost controlled centre, which would likely be the Avs main target in trading G.

Avalanche fans are delusional. Girard has been on a decline the last 2 years. Boqvist's biggest issues are injuries, something Girard isn't safe from himself. Such a drastic overpayment for an equal level player who is much cheaper.

The Jackets are in a unique position. We have tons of talent coming through the system and it creates intrigue bc the Jackets literally have all options to improve. But one thing that Jarmo will not do is destroy the pipeline to trade for a player that is redundant. Girard is a good but the Jackets would be wise to stay with their draft and development strategy. This team is having a rough season but there are some lights of optimism shiny.
