Trading up in the draft Bc Y not

Created by: Waddley1234
Team: 2023-24 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 31, 2023
Published: Mar. 31, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Matvei Michkov were to drop to teens he may not be of use to teams that are on the cusp of competing and they may rather have more developed prospects. Michkov signed a 3 year contract with the KHL, which means the soonest we can see him play an nhl game would be in the 2026-2027 season. Not to mention due to current events many nhl teams have suspended scouting in russia which will deter many from michkov. He is most likley the 2nd most talented player in this upcoming draft behind bedard. If the teams on the cusp of competing may not want him, the rangers should. At the start of the 2026 season Panarin and trouba will both be ufas, and while i don't doubt that we would resign them, they will age. Having a boost of elite talent in three years when some of our current talent begins to wane away is more valuable then a middle six foward that would play in the nhl in 2 years that may have a minimal impact. If he does fall to 13, which more than likely wont happen, but if it does the rangers should jump at the opportunity to trade up in the draft.

Pipe dream. Why would BUF trade away that pick to begin with? Especially for prospects... they have one of the best prospect pools in the entire NHL. I can see them do it if it makes their team better immediately. Like elite goal tender or minute munching rugged defender.

There's nothing in that package that would make the Sabres wanna drop to the stars pick.

He's literally the 2nd best player in this draft - he doesn't drop below 5 lol.

No chance he drops that far, maybe 8th AT WORST.

I think it was a DET fan who already proposed that if hes there at 7th or 8th, they'd offer the 10th OV, 20th OV, a 2nd and a 4th, which I think is far better than the above.

If Im NYR and hes still on the board at 7th-8th, maybe Philly, I'd offer DAL 1st, NYR 1st and the above. But really it would take a lot to move up that high and all the others (including DET who has the draft capitol) would want him.

Interesting idea, But Buffalo declines. Maybe a Good Young NHL ready RD could change that.

If Michkov somehow drops in a position below top 5, there is no doubt in my mind the Red Wings offer 9OA + 17OA + two 2nds to get him. But he probably (at most) drops 4th.

If Michkov drops that far the Sabres simply take him. Or find a team that has a young, top-four NHL ready d-man + other pieces to trade.

The drop in the draft from 13th to about 26th is too much for the Sabres (or any team to consider. Like the thought though.
Now the Rangers are cap strapped and will have trouble signing both RFAs Miller and LAF. Something on a Miller for the 13th might be a possibility.

Nah, I say Fantilli is better. But you are right. I think he goes 4 at the earliest and 7 at the latest. No way he falls that far.

Was it you who proposed that?

I believe you're right, theres little chance he drops out of top 5, but if he does and DET put up that offer, I think the team holding that 6th-8th pick would be hard pressed to say no, and NYR would have to throw in Lafreniere or Kappo in some sort of offer to come close.

PHI at 7th or 8th would be very tempted based on their current squad of youngsters and not really dire in any position, they'd take that deal in a second, if he fell that far

It was not me, but I think a lot of Red Wings fans recognize that if we get Michkov, his arrival sets the cup contention dates.

Pure skill wise? Easy #2. Obviously he's a winger instead of center, plus political issues push down his ranking, but I mean this kid is seriously good. If his name was Matthew Michaels from Sudbury, he'd be consensus #2.

I am not saying the NYR are looking to trade Cuylle, and the trade proposal aside isn't Cuylle the type of prospect that the Sabres would be looking for?

Possibly. The Sabres need to be more difficult to play against, in my opinion, but our gm doesn't seem to be too focused on adding size. The Sabres have 4 first round pick forwards coming soon, all on the small side. I guess it's a philosophical thing, I don't see the Sabres front office moving a first round pick for a winger with size, unless it's a Timo meier type trade.

Cuylle will be a black ace this year and is on the fast track to making the NYR next year, good chance on the 3L, but it could be a crazy off-season. He could fit in on the other side of Greenway for a physical line that is more playoff oriented, it seems like it could be a good move to burn some draft/prospect capital to bring in an NHL-ready prospect to mature with the rest of the team especially given the depth of the Sabres farm system.
