Jets Reality

Created by: Imsmarterthanu
Team: 2023-24 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 12, 2023
Published: Apr. 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Jets need to face reality. This roster is not going anywhere. They are miles away from their peers like Colorado, Minnesota, and Dallas; and aren’t particularly close to Vegas, Seattle, or LA. They need to rebuild and they need to start this offseason. Teams like St. Louis and Nashville have already committed to retools/rebuilds bc their GMs aren’t blind. Not to mention, the only reason WPG is in a playoff spot is because Calgary couldn’t win in OT.

Trades
1.
WPG
  1. Fleury, Cale [RFA Rights]
  2. Goyette, David
  3. 2024 1st round pick (SEA)
  4. 2024 3rd round pick (SEA)
Additional Details:
Seattle could use a big 1C like Scheifele. He’s on an expiring contract, so there’s not a lot of risk. Fleury is probably not a part of their future, and Goyette is too young to help them now or soon. Draft picks don’t matter when they win the cup before Vegas.
SEA
  1. Scheifele, Mark ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Mark is not going to re-sign in WPG. He should have a decent amount of value this offseason coming off a 40 goal season.
2.
WPG
  1. DeSmith, Casey
  2. Granlund, Mikael
  3. 2024 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
DeSmith will be the backup/1B during the retool/rebuild. Granlund is not a terrible top 6 guy to have, could flip in him the future.
PIT
  1. Niederreiter, Nino ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Nino is a solid middle 6 forward who will help with depth scoring. He’d also only cost $2.5M. Dumping Granlund and DeSmith frees up cap space to better improve the team, assuming they’re not gonna rebuild.
3.
WPG
  1. Doughty, Drew
  2. Kupari, Rasmus [RFA Rights]
  3. Petersen, Cal
  4. Roy, Matt
  5. 2024 2nd round pick (LAK)
  6. 2025 2nd round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Kupari could easily become a 2C, Jets will just have to give him a chance. Peterson will get another chance in WPG to revive his career. This also assumes Drew Doughty does not have WPG on his NTC, though WPG would inform him that he’d be traded to a contender before the season starts.
LAK
  1. Morrissey, Joshua
  2. 2024 6th round pick (WPG)
  3. 2025 7th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Morrissey is an upgrade over Doughty, and cheaper. Most of what they’re letting go are not vital parts of their roster either, also frees up cap space. This trade is good for their next few years of contention.
4.
WPG
  1. Bailey, Josh
  2. Bolduc, Samuel [RFA Rights]
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Bolduc is the main addition from this trade. He’d immediately slot into the top 6. Bailey is mostly a cap dump, but he’d get regular top 6 time and could possibly be flipped at the deadline.
NYI
  1. Appleton, Mason
  2. Doughty, Drew ($5,500,000 retained)
  3. 2024 4th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Doughty helps the offensive output, which is something they need. At a $5.5M it’s not that bad either. The Isles should be in win now mode and Doughty and Appleton help that.
5.
WPG
  1. Barron, Justin
Additional Details:
Barron is the brother of Morgan Barron, and he’s been solid in his rookie season on a bad Habs team.
MTL
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Dubois is a bonafide 2C and would be a great addition to the young forward corps.
6.
WPG
  1. Kochetkov, Pyotr
  2. 2024 1st round pick (CAR)
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (PHI)
  4. 2025 1st round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
This is not enough for Hellebuyck, but no team in need of a goalie has enough for him. Even then, it would be silly for the Jets to bring back a 31 year old goalie on a long term expensive contract, so getting a young promising goalie and lots of draft capital is good instead. Kochetkov will compete with Peterson and DeSmith for a roster spot.
CAR
  1. Hellebuyck, Connor
  2. 2024 5th round pick (WPG)
  3. 2025 5th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
The Canes were already a cup contender, adding a top 3 goalie makes them somehow better. What they’re giving up will be worth it when they get a cup.
7.
WPG
  1. Mete, Victor [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
I like Mete and think he could be very interesting given more ice time.
TOR
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (SEA)
Additional Details:
The Leafs need some draft picks.
8.
WPG
  1. Brown, Logan [RFA Rights]
  2. Gaudette, Adam [RFA Rights]
  3. Scandella, Marco
  4. 2024 5th round pick (STL)
  5. 2025 4th round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Gaudette and Brown will play bottom 6 roles, and maybe one breaks out into a middle 6 player. The 4th and 5th are to take on Scandella.
STL
  1. DeMelo, Dylan
Additional Details:
DeMelo adds a good top 4 defenseman to a team that was awful in defense last season. Getting rid of Scandella allows them to make more moves, and Brown never really worked.
9.
WPG
  1. Yamamoto, Kailer
Additional Details:
Yamamoto has a decent amount of potential and will get top 6 time with WPG. Due to his age, I feel like Edmonton would be reluctant to part ways with him, which is why I’d send a 3rd.
EDM
  1. Ehlers, Nikolaj
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Ehlers is an elite player who would be an amazing top 6 player alongside McDavid or Drai.
10.
WPG
  1. 2024 5th round pick (ARI)
Additional Details:
He wants a trade, he’ll get it, Jets should accept whatever a team wants to offer for him.
ARI
  1. Stanley, Logan [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
AZ has shown they can give defensemen new life, Stanley could be a prime candidate for a rebound.
11.
WPG
  1. 2024 7th round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
They should be very active during the TDL, likely moving DeSmith, Stepan, Dillon, Scandella, and Roy for 3rd, 4th, and 5th round picks. I could even see Connor, Grandlund, or Lowry being traded.
ANA
  1. 2023 7th round pick (WPG)

Wouldn't trade Doughty for Morrissey 1-for-1.

Almost every single trade is extremely awful for Winnipeg. The rebuild won't be starting off on the right foot with that many bad trades.

This is laughably bad, the Jets adding a 3rd to Ehlers for Yamamoto is particularly funny, just delete this.

Since you're flipping Doughty, don't you think that Bailey, Bolduc, Kupari, Petersen, Roy and three seconds is a little excessive for Morrissey and Appleton?

That's without regard to your complete misconception about the respective DEFENSIVE abilities of the two defensemen.

Rebuilding is a good move

But there’s a problem which no one mentions

Winnipeg is a market that wont support losing. Which was a factor in the Jets 1.0 leaving town (and the weak a*s Canadian dollar at the time)

Doughty is never leaving LA but the $5.5M retention by the Jets for whatever is left on his contract is funny.

This whole post has gotta be one of the worst I've ever seen on here.

I never even noticed that . . . so it means that we would be paying $12 million per year for Morrissey instead of $11 million per year for Doughty, who plays a full 2 minutes more per game. Hilarious!

I'm pretty sure the retention is by the Jets, regardless this whole post is terrible.

The first trade has some semblance in reality - Scheif with full retention should bring back a 1st & a strong prospect; maybe the 3rd piece isn't a 2nd, but that's splitting hairs.

The Pittsburgh trade isn't necessarily good for the Penguins but I see the logic - Winnipeg eats some of Nino's deal to get back surplus value on what they traded for him, gets Granlund to fill Scheifele's lineup spot, and gets a goalie. I think Pittsburgh would pass though, because spending a 2nd to get Granlund and then a 1st to ship him out and get Nino back is just awful asset management.

Beyond that, though, woof.

-The Kings aren't adding that much to a Doughty-for-Morrissey trade, if that concept even made it past both players' NMCs. In reality this is closer to a one-for-one deal with LA either doing a little retention or taking some bad cap back; adding Kupari/Roy/picks to offset Petersen's deal is something that I can't see Rob Blake even considering. Too much value for the sake of losing cap that they don't necessarily have to lose.

-The Islanders wouldn't do this deal - they already have Ryan Pulock and Noah Dobson on the right side, so as good as Doughty is, why are they going to spend assets to add to a position that they don't need more top end talent at? And what "win now" value does Mason Appleton bring to the table? And, again, is Drew Doughty waiving his NMC a second time to go to the Island?

-God, can we give PLD to MTL trades a break? No reason for the Habs to give up a young asset for a guy that has expressed a desire to sign there in 2024; no reason for the Jets to settle for a lesser package by limiting themselves to just Montreal if they want to move PLD.

-Two 1sts, a likely high 2nd rounder, AND a young goalie with both affordable term and success at the NHL level for one year of Connor Hellebuyck? This is one of the most egregious overpays I've seen around these parts - can you name me one goalie trade in the cap era that looked *anything* like this?

-I doubt Mete gets tendered, just sign him in July if you want him so bad - paying a 3rd for the rights to a 6th/7th D is just silly.

-Dylan DeMelo might not be a star but he's clearly worth more than a pair of depth forwards, an overpaid bottom pair D, and a pair of mid/late-rounders. I'd think he brings back a 2nd and an okay prospect in a trade, if you're moving him out.

-Terrible deal for Winnipeg. You have no need to move Ehlers, so why are you adding to him to get Yamamoto? Sure, Edmonton might not want to move him, but when the return is a perennial 70 point guy like Nik Ehlers, I think they'll find the motivation. Oilers would add something significant to this package, and the Jets don't add a pick to Ehlers.

-Just don't tender Stanley. I can't see anyone really giving up anything of value for him - he gets no ice time and has demanded a trade, so at this point why not just non-tender him and let him pick where he goes? The best I could see is a team throwing you a 7th rounder to take a chance at signing him.

See, obviously, my mind can't process the insanity of ANYONE retaining 50% on Drew Doughty's contract.

Doughty is worse than Morrissey and it’s not close, especially when you include age and contract. Kings would jump at an opportunity to move him, especially for Morrissey.

Idk what you expect for WPG to get if you think a bunch of 1sts, 2nds, and young players is awful.

Doughty has a terrible contract, Morrissey is a top 10 defenseman, and they’re retaining that awful contract. Not to mention they’re taking on Paterson’s contract. You have to pay for that.

Morrissey is younger, better, and a lot cheaper than Doughty. His cap his is $6.25M long term, idk where you’re getting $12M.

I thought that in acquiring Morrissey, the Kings were retaining on Doughty (a total of $11.75 million). @MissThe Whalers corrected me.

Doughty is worth every dollar of his contract. He's still one of the very best defensive defensemen in the league, in addition to being very good offensively. Wouldn't trade 1-for-1 for Morrissey.
