I really, really have a hard time seeing CBJ move Jenner. He's a 25+ goal 50+ point 2C on what might be the leagues sweetest contract. Given that he re-upped at 3.75 million for another 4 years I'm surprised he didn't demand a full NMC.

Regardless of the 'Jenner is untouchable' crew on here. That is simply a terrible trade for the Avs.

The Ryan Graves market is going to be crazy. I expect him to sign a contract worth almost double what you have him for.

And this is why (in addition to being the captain):

This is a trade that CBJ have to consider, even though Boone isn't "available". Potential Boone replacement down the middle, LD hole is filled, and upgrade some picks.

But yeah, it's the whole circular "Boone isn't available" argument all over again, he's a unique player and leader that not many teams have, and on one of the league's best deals. Everyone wants that kind of player, so market value is very high. You have to outbid other teams and the Jackets' high internal valuation of the player, so you're probably not going to come out on top if you trade for him. Then you get into "Boone isn't worth it", because you're overpaying, which, yeah, that's the point. Easier to say he's not available. This is at least a solid good-faith offer I'd consider.

The issue I see, and it's admittedly from my limited knowledge of CBJ, but they are already lacking in top 6C, which will likely be solved this year in the draft, but Boone is the other one, and CBJ has wingers ready to go, if everything can come together, CBJ could put together a real strong season, though injuries and a goaltending collapse killed this years hopes.

With Jonny Hockey and Laine already there, does trading out Jenner and picks for a potential Jenner replacement, that Colorado doesn't think can fill the role (or at least isn't ready to fill it now), and Girard make sense?

I'll concede that you could maybe convince Rodrigues to stick around at $2M, and that Eller will take a Cupchaser contract at $1M.

But why in the world are Ryan Graves and Max Domi taking pay cuts on long term deals? I would honestly be shocked if two 28 year olds that are generally thought of solid second line/pair guys would take that much of a haircut.

CBJ's depth down the middle is a big question mark even with Jenner (lots of bottom-6 guys like Kuraly and Roslovic, then prospects like Foudy and McKown that aren't necessarily NHL-ready), and there's so many holes on the roster and young players in their 1st or 2nd year that I think the team is a few years from competing still. Johnny and Laine are young enough (and Boone, frankly) that they'll still be excellent in 3-4 years when the team is making a push, so that's what you have to plan for.

This team might take a step forward next year, but they won't compete for the playoffs unless EVERYTHING goes right (few injuries, young players make huge strides and fill holes, goaltending gets back to peak form, etc), which is probably too large an ask.

So, yes and no...it doesn't make sense to move Jenner because he's part of the core now and in the future...but if you do, it only makes sense if you're upgrading multiple positions, with players who also fit the future core, to do so. This deal is enough to at least make you consider it.

Personally, I don't think the Jackets even consider this offer.
