Hellyea

Created by: DopeGM
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2023
Published: May 15, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Besides 2C or a standout sniper, which seem like good targets with the pick (I like Dvorsky and he’s more likely to be there than Leonard), I think the best use of cap space is at G.

Also, Detroit is the Reinbacher floor.

Even if Cossa hits, you only have three or four years of overlap. It’ll be a little tricky to manage (like Knight in FLA) but Hellye is worth it IMO.

Adding Wheeler keeps the acquisition cost down a bit.

Would be interesting to sign or trade for one of those “meh” dmen that has a $2M - $3M salary or projected salary that might make a good long term fit. Kind of like what Seattle pulled off with Schultz and Washington with Jenson.

I think Yz could get Hellye resigned around $9 on a 8 year deal although it will probably come in at $10.5/$11 on a shorter term like 6 years.

I used a 24 2nd because I think this deal happens post July 1.

Hellebuyck is going to be in pretty high demand if made available. That offer is not going to land him. Wheeler at 50% is not going to bring the cost down either, thinking it would is complete nonsense

I can't see Winnipeg having any interest in that offer. Any deal probably starts with 17 this year and a few other picks or prospects as well as a young roster player.

Although I like ragging on the fact that WPG fans over value their goalie like NFT bros and NFTs - this is underpayment.

Cap isn’t a issue in winnipeg especially if they move on from helly, would be a good thing moving on from wheeler also, but nobody is getting that 14 million, especially if Dubois walks or traded this summer, all about as high of picks as possible if helly/Connor moved on from. Some of the other guys possibly hockey trades, but ideally if helly/scheifele/Dubois all trades, probably want a run of picks like the bruins had in 17. Could be a wild off-season in Winnipeg.

It won’t happen before the draft because of the sign and trade implications.

Winnipeg will ask for a first. It’s not a great offer for sure. I’m not a Wings fan. Well they are probably my second favourite team actually. But I’m not making the offer low because I’m a Wings homer. I think adding Wheeler without cap retention saves them a 2nd rounder basically.

Also, goalies always go for less than expected fair market value. The key to the deal is Veleno. If Winnipeg likes him at 2C for the long term, he’s worth a lot.

I think in a Hellebuyck trade with Detroit they would need to add Husso and start from there. Plus it makes no sense to get Helly and extend him 7 or 8 years when Cossa ideally will be your starter in the next 3 years.

Only good prospects regress after first year, drafted ECHL goalie in 1st round. A lot of talk about prospects for a core that has a ceiling of losing in the wild card round year after year

And what prospects that you speak of have regressed? Mazur and Lombardi took big steps this year, Kasper came over to the team immediately after the SHL playoffs and Wallinder hopped right into the AHL after the SHL playoffs. Also Cossa is one of if not the best goaltender in the entire ECHL and he's still only 20...

This is the thing; Cossa could be your starter but ideally definitely not before the age of 23. A big guy like that will develop slowly. I see him starting his starters’ career like Pekka Rinne which I believe was around 28. But with waiver eligibility starting at 23, I think he’s the backup from years 3-6 from now which means Hellye is an old overpaid backup for two or three years if he signs long-term.

But I think both sides would be happy with a 6 year deal so long as he’s the top paid goalie in the League.

Also, Husso won’t accept a deal to WIN.

Wheeler has negative/no value at his current 8M+ but at 4ishM he has some value as a 3rd liner. There will be a handful of other teams interested and would easily beat that offer. Jets would want your 1st plus multiple prospects and young roster players. The jets are not rebuilding, they are rebuilding on the fly. They want young NHLers that can make an impact next season.

The Jets aren't going to attach Wheeler to Hellebuyck to reduce the price on Helly. You'll need to plan on paying full sticker price for Helly.

That’s probably fair. Maybe the key to a deal between these two clubs is Bergrren? Or Soderblom

Unlikely. It probably would have to be built on a 23 1st to be competitive with other offers.

It’s not realistic to expect anyone to offer before the 23 draft. I mean, that’s my opinion so it’s possible that WSH gets this done without the team acquiring Hellye able to discuss extension.
