Cappy Dumpies

Description
The only trades Dubas should be making are trades that create cap space.

The FA class gets talked down a lot but for a team like PIT this FA class is close to perfect.

PIT Picks don't matter. Stop acting like they do.

NMC's could screw this up, obviously.

Zero chance the Hawks take 2 years of 6.25 for quickly approaching 36 year old Petry for a 2nd (which is the net value of those picks for the Hawks). Further compounded by the fact that the Hawks have Jones, Murphy, and Zaitsev under contract as pricy RHD.

Using the 14th overall pick to dump a good player and save no cap space isn't a good move imo.

And yes - obviously Carter's NMC will get in the way of that trade.

Hawks decline. A RHD going on 36 years old, and a $6.25M cap hit for the next 2 seasons plus loosing the #35 and #44 picks isn't worth the 14th

Petry also declines the trade anyway

#14 OA in this class is worth more than I think you think it is.

That said, I agree that it's not 14 + Petry for 35 and 44. Probably more likely 44 + 55.

I wholeheartedly agree #14 is worth more than most drafts....but so are 35 and 44 (or 55). There will be some REALLy good players on the board at 35 and probably even 44.

The Hawk/Pens dump trade is Granlund and not a RHD unless it is something bigger like Murphy or Zaitsev going to the Pens.

For me a trade that makes sense is #14 + Granlund for #35 + #56 + Collin Blackwell. Granlund at least fills an open roster spot

Obviously, I would accept that offer as the Anaheim GM. I think Jeff Carter would waive only on the agreement that we would buy him out, which would probably suit him.

While I agree with a lot of what @wojohawk and @ChiHawk have said, I think if the Hawks have an opportunity to get #14 without giving up #19, that's something that gets explored. Assuming Petry waives (not a sure thing), yes, he's old. Yes, he's overpaid for what he provides on the ice. But he's far from a cap dump. He ain't Zaitsev or Peterson. He's a far more effective player than either of those two are. The only guy's he's "blocking" in Chicago are Mitchell (who the Hawks may not even bring back) and Regula ( who still isn't ready for full time NHL duty anyway). I'll take Petry on 3rd pair over Zaitsev or Caleb all day long. The quality of player the Hawks would get at #14 over what they'd get at even #35 makes this a deal the Hawks want to make in my eyes. Cap space is obviously no issue. Ok, maybe #35 and #44 is a little rich, but not so rich I just dismiss the idea of this trade. I'd trade #35 and #51 for sure to get #14 and take Petry. He's not a cap dump just because he's overpaid.

@Hawksguy81 gets it.

If the Jets don't want DeSmith I'm sure some team somewhere will take him.

Sending Carter to a team that will eat his cap hit for a pick and let him just "retire" on their tab might not be as hard as it seems. Really about how self-aware Carter is when it comes to his real current abilities as a player. I have to hope the Pens' FO can get through to him on this.

It makes a lot more sense if Murphy is traded IMO

Sure. But I doubt Murphy is going anywhere this season. I'll be amazed if he doesn't end up being Bedard's "billet dad" this season. Like Seabs was for Kirby his first two years.
