Habs would rather draft top ten than do this

I can see Montreal being in on Hart. But not at the expense of the 5th overall pick. Goalies just don't have that much value. AND Hart is not that good. He has not proven much at the NHL level. The 22nd overall doesn't make up the gap in my mind.

Taking back Allen's contract provides no incentive as it's not even a bad contract or handicapping them in anyway. MTL would have an extra goalie but if you want to talk about incentivizing, you take Gallagher's contract. Even then MTL says no.

We could just draft any of the Goalies in the 2nd round at 37 since Hart was drafted 48th OA. That would make much more sense than this.

Monty has had more success than Hart recently. Will Hart have the better career? No doubt! But Habs don't need the 20% upgrade on Monty that Hart would bring.

If people dont like the trade or think it makes sense for Montreal thats perfectly fine. That doesnt mean you all need to get all stupid.

Jake Allen has a cap hit of almost four million for two more years. He is 32 years old and his numbers have declined for three straight years. Last season he was at 3.55 and 0.891 which is putrid. That contract is awful and Montreal could use that 3.85 million a thousand times better.

Montembeault was not better than Hart last year and for their careers its not even close. Hart had 15 more starts last season and a GAA about half a goal lower and save % 7 points higher. Hart is a massive upgrade over him.

As for "Hart was a 2nd round pick so we can just some goalie at 37." I'm not even going to waste my time.

While Allen has not been spectacular recently, he was signed as a placeholder until the team finds their goalie of the future as he's a valuable locker room presence and he's completely fine with the team's situation. Montembeault has taken over the starter's role and was 13th in GSAx last season, so it's not like Allen is single-handedly sinking the team. So with all those factors, Habs would never "use" Allen to trade down from #5 and get a goalie who's just 1 year younger than Montembeault and performed on par with him recently.

Let alone at the expense of 5OA, I can't remember the last time a pick was even used on a goalie at 5OA, let alone traded for a top 10 pick. Was it Price the last time? Yeah, this idea ain't happening. Stupid trade.

Allen is not a cap dump, he is a cap casualty. Essentially a stop gap goaltender. He is someone you attach a first to (EX: FLA 1st, etc.) in order to upgrade goaltending but isn't a dump, just doesn't carry much (if any) positive value outside of being athletically able to wear goalie equipment and stop a few pucks.

Carter Hart is NOT Carey Price. Price was a no. 5 pick How do you compare the 2. You can`t and you never will.

This is the think youre not getting

No one on the Habs is a cap dump. They arent needing to trade away salary for the sake of it. So Allen himself has value for the Habs. Then you just put the 5th overall pick for an above average goalie at best. And instead of looking at faulty goalie stats like GAA and Sv%, upgrade and look at GSAA (Goals saved above average) and QS, Hart has Monty beaten of GSAA but Monty has Hart beaten in Quality Starts.

This proves that they arent far apart and isnt worth the 5th overall pick value in upgrade. No goalie in the league is. Shesty or Vasi could be offered for that pick and id still reject. For the fact that the habs are still rebuilding and all these goalie upgrades would do is keep up mediocre and that you can find any bozo starter in FA or trade for a one like Kuemper

Since when allen is a cap dump and in what universe are you currently in thinking you're getting the 5oa pick for hart! ?!

Habs might even decline if it was just to move down 2 spots
