TheAthletic Mock draft ideas

Created by: Andy_Dick
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 15, 2023
Published: Jun. 15, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Addendum to the Pens deal.. TheAthletic had Granlund+14th overall for the 31st pick in the draft. This is Granlund+14th overall for the 37th pick and Harris. I much better like this deal for the Pens when 31st and 37th difference is negligible at best and you get a top4 young puck mover with cost certainty the next 2 years @1.4M AAV that can penalty kill with the best in the league.

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. 2023 1st round pick (DET)
  2. 2023 1st round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Theathletic mock draft had an interesting idea to trade the 5th and 31st pick for the Wings 9thOA and 17thOA picks. Not sure what Hughes will do but he is unorthodox after last years draft chaos
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (FLA)
  2. 2023 1st round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Yzerman loves his enigmatic Russians after drafting Kucherov and trading for Sergachev. He goes with Michkov at 5.
2.
MTL
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Please just do it, already. I, no longer care but know it's inevitable and Pat Brisson floating these mystery teams is just leverage for PLD contract negotiations. 9million lol that also is a tactic. He's not going anywhere but Mtl. If you believe that other teams are in the race, you probably also believe he will be paid that 9M AAV. I remember too when I thought fairy tales could come true then I turned 8 years old. Habs arent giving better than the 17th overall pick and the Jets wont get better at the TDL so don't say his rental price is better than this cause a late pick in a later draft is not close to better. We all know the same ppl that go into every thread just to say 'not competitive' as other mystery offers are out there BUT dont exist.
WPG
  1. Armia, Joel
  2. Dvorak, Christian
  3. 2023 1st round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Dvo no trade list is only effective in July. Trade is done before the draft. The salary dump matches up with PLD money. Dvo isnt negative value in this market where centers are at a premium as Lars Eller and JT Compher are the prizes in free agency.
Armia is definitely negative value but he's an option for Winnipeg they can hopefully build back up but it doesnt matter cause they are clinging to this compete narrative. This helps Chevy sell it, unironically. Winnipeg gets players they can use and another pick to draft another big body center like a Danielson or Calum Ritchie or one of the many very good prospects available at 17 on the wing like a But, Perreault or Wood. Having the 17th and 18th picks b2b is very appealing to the Jets and I don’t see how they resist here. Done. Now lets move on already and stop the whining from Habs/Jets fans whom think PLD will be free of charge w/o leverage or he's worth a number 1 elite center price.
3.
MTL
  1. Granlund, Mikael
  2. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Granlund dead cap taken is worth paying at least a 2nd. 3 2nds including an early 2nd is well worth the draft value chart price.
PIT
  1. Harris, Jordan
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Harris is worth at least a 2nd rnd pick with a great contract
4.
MTL
  1. Yamamoto, Kailer
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
https://twitter.com/glefrancoisLP/status/
1391942385425387525
EDM
  1. Evans, Jake
  2. 2024 7th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Trade Yamo instead of making the Pool Party mistake or the buyout. Evans is cheap depth for a team that needs to shed cap and go bargain hunting. Evans speed and past playoff performance will be interesting to Holland. Oilers already like Jake after the 2021 season where he skated against Mcdavid on a line with Lehkonen and shut him down. Connor calls Jake Big Head and they have mutual friends since they played against each other in the OHL Cups around 2012-13. Foegele-Evans should be a good pair
5.
MTL
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Draft Nate Danielson at 9OA. Projections all over the place but seems like a Hughes pick. Yes, they have Beck. Not a guarantee that Owen is legit and either can be moved to the wing just like Dach. One of the oldest player in the draft which is ironic with my next pick in Mikhail Gulyayev who's one of the youngest.
6.
MTL
DET
  1. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Draft Mikhail Gulyayev. Bobrov pick. High upside LHD. Is it too early? Don't matter. You guarantee the player. Whether he's available at 14 or 31OA. Same as Dtown guaranteeing Michkov. You cant be a GM with timid feelings at the draft otherwise the Wings never draft Seider 'too early' Teams have their own lists and Mikhail's upside is the highest among the D. Simashev is a bottom pair D with size that can skate a bit at best. Pellikka isnt close to this Russian's ceiling as a puck mover. Mikhail did put up historic production as a 16 year old. I think the Russian factor with Michkov is overblown by Habs pundits. They want size at forward. Michkov i don't think is a player they covet unlike the Wings. Nothing to do with his birth place. If Willander is available. they could go there for a RHD with the hype surrounding him if the Habs think Mikhail could be had later but i dont think they'll wait unlike last year with Lane Hutson. You dont always get that lucky. Habs got a lot of promise on D but they need to hit it BIG like they did with Guhle and perhaps Hutson. Keep swinging.
7.
MTL
  1. Scandella, Marco
  2. 2023 1st round pick (DAL)
  3. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
STL
  1. Matheson, Michael
Additional Details:
What is the market for Mike Matheson now?
Gavrikov 5.9M AAV... Severson 6.3M.
Provorov AAV with the retained money is @ 4.75M. And, he received a 1st and 2nd in trade. Matheson is at 4.875M signed a year longer term when the cap is suposed to go up significantly. Only 29 years old and fared a hell of a lot better than Provorov with top PP and top pair mins going PPG in his last 25 games to finish with a career high in points after so much promise in Florida as an elite skating defenceman with physicality. It certainly is higher than a struggling Provorov with an extra year of bargain term.
8.
MTL
STL
  1. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Draft Daniil But. Nobody knows where he goes in this draft. Mid 1st, 2nd round. He's a project. You cant teach size. And, the Habs should know the kid with Bobrov's connections in Russia.
9.
MTL
STL
  1. 2023 1st round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Draft Andrew Cristall at 29th OA. Keeps falling in mock drafts. I know some of you hate his skating but he has elite hands that matches anyone in the draft class. Easy risk pick as Habs have a ton of draft capital. This is how they make up for passing on Michkov. Taking another smallish player with warts BUT puts up huge numbers. Last year, it was Beck at 33rd overall who mimics Shane Wright’s game after passing on Wright at 1 OA.

Harris is better than both. Smith especially is a tire fire defensively. Even then this is a cheaper price than you'll get to dump the Granlund contract when theathletic isnt even offering a Harris

So he's more of an all around Dman as opposed to just a puck mover? That changes things, but honestly a buyout doesn't cost us #14 and is actually quite reasonable. I don't think they would do this, even if the value is pretty good.

Yeah. Buyout is an option but a waste of cap as its 4 years of bad money, 3 very bad money years. I dont think it takes a 1st to move Granlund like that Blues fan incorrectly *assumed* I said about Marco Scandella whom even has a year less of term. A 2nd should be able to move Granlund's 2 year term when he can be useful as a trade chip in 2025 to a team like the Habs which is better than a buyout for the Pens. TheAthletic thinks you need to move down 17 spots in the 1st round for a Granlund dump. I think that is far too much but Harris is a very good player but he's redundant on the Habs. Hutson, Struble, Norlinder, Tourigny. Harris is more of a sure thing though which helps the Pens window not the Habs whom should be competing in 3-5 years and looking at high upside like a Gulyayev. Pens get a legit option on the backend with a low cap hit to fit in a higher cap option for a netminder and better depth in the bottom 6. Harris can play on the 2nd pair and even be elevated. He was spectacular as a rookie, not much of a shot but everything else just pops about his game.

Unlikely that so many teams trade good players for Montreal's junk.

I had to look. Yes, the 17th overall is junk and the cap doesnt exist to fit in PLD's salary. More brilliance from the resident from the forks. I wonder what the excuses or lack there of will be this time after you badly fumbled the Laine trade value in 2021. Then there are 2 main players focused in trades whom are buyout candidates everywhere in Granlund and Scandella. Oh! Yes.. good players?! You cant be a real person! I refuse to believe it. I choose to think you are an AI robot trying to act human.

mmm @Koskinen_The_Great I love many of your trade, but the Mattheson one I can't. We need Matty more than picks. 9th and 17th would live with that if Det add TUOMISTO. If you can flip Yamamoto for a bigger reward at tdl i'm not against it. Hope this offer you some good return.

Probably speaking of the Blues trade. That one is not in the article. The Pens and Wings trades are the ones quoted from theathletic.

Okay, so where did it come from?

Harris is the same type of prospect that we have on the left side with PO Joseph and Ty Smith. Another left shot puck moving D isn't actually a need.

Harris is a more complete player. He is Smith & POJ in one.

I agree. We need our tete carre de chez nous. He made us forget about Petry instantly. That is saying alot. I don't think we would get that return either. Also STL defense is a mess. The last thing they need is Matheson, even though he would be an upgrade on their mishmash of 2015 allstars.

Winnipeg is a pretty brutal place to live year round, honestly, and I love the forks, VJ's drive-INN but living there all year round with that brutal weather. I'd be a bit loopy too. Probably talks to that giant framed photo of the Queen like the Ghostbusters 2 villain and gets validation

Nowhere did i say Scandella dump was worth a 1st.. But u cant stop ppl from their confirmation bias despite lengthy explanations.

Since you are aware of the Athletic, here’s Dom’s modeling of Harris’s full season.
Maybe he dropped off severely in the last 2 months of the season.
I do like Harris a lot though, believe there’s a true top 4 dman in there.

Detroit trade I can get behind.
That Jets one though. Man.

The Jets didnt even elect for team arbitration on PLD to protect against offersheets unlike the Sens and Debrincat which means receiving a 1st and 3rd without bad money going the other way is a much better deal than theyll get for PLD in a trade. That would clearly indicate that the Jets are definitely taking bad money the other way which was obvious as you need to fit PLD's salary for 2023-24 in a league that is dollar in and dollar out
