Why does Nylander agree to a sign and trade? By all accounts he wants to stay a Leaf. He probably just says keep me or trade me as is.

He is a pending UFA and should be treated as such.

But later in the year, close to the deadline, he would have good value for sure.

In this scenario Carolina just question marks you.

Pesce and a 1st for Nylander, I can understand. But Jarvis as well?

Ehh Winger market is soft.

He will get a bigger return than Cat but I'd be pleasently surprised if it looked like this.

It's why I think we should keep him - even without an extension

Canes interest would have been killed when the 10mil number came out. It’s not a contract they would give him, especially without seeing him in action in their system first. Besides, that is a drastic overpayment for Nylander.

Leafs need three pieces back, an established top 4 defenceman, a young forward and a 1st. Otherwise it would be better to just keep him and maybe trade him at the trade deadline like you suggested. That's when teams overpay for star players.

The hurricanes refused to trade Jarvis for Meier and they for sure won’t for Nylander

There is no chance the leafs trade nylander at the deadline. If he’s moved (& I’m of the opinion he shouldn’t, & won’t, be moved) - it’s now when they are up against the cap and Tre wants to adjust the d corps apparently. If he’s on the team come start of season - literally no chance he is moved at deadline

There's a difference between a better return from that weak debrincat one and expecting a young high end player like Jarvis and a first AND then a valuable vet like Pesce. I would be happy with two of those pieces coming in as a Leafs fan. All three would be great

Is there a legit source for that 10 mil number? I'm sure nylanders camp is negotiating hard (I unfortunately expected him to all year), but I don't know the source of that 10 mil number.

The ol player, pick and a prospect makes sense. I agree with it. But you chose both particularly valuable prospect (or young player in this case) and player.

Leafs need to aim high and create a bidding war. I think what Fiala got back for Minnesota is reasonable and that's what I expect what the return for Nylander will look like. In that case it was a high end prospect and a 1st.

Don’t really understand where the leafs have way more leverage than sens did with cat - the extra year in a sign and trade scenario? What if Nylander just says I’m gonna play it out and deal with the contract next summer bc we’re not on the same page? Not saying that’s what’s happening or will happen but if that happens then they either keep him and hope for the best or trade him as a rental. If it’s the latter, a return like this won’t come close. Jarvis wouldn’t be in the package with an extended Nylander (assuming Canes could sign him at a number Leafs don’t want to which is unlikely).

Wrong. Lil Willy pushing for 10m lol. Like Cat saying he wanted 9+m, not many suitors lining up. DET actually got lucky with 4 instead of a crazier 8yr deal

Willy pushing for 10 on the Leafs because Marner is making 11. I think he'll sign to a lesser number on a team where the top guys are not paid as highly as they are on the Leafs.
