Initial Creation Date: Jul. 27, 2023
Published: Jul. 27, 2023

Description
If Red Wings want Nylander, this is what it will cost, Leafs hold all the leverage. We can sign Nylander to whatever he is asking but doesn't mean we have to. If there is no good package out there, we will just end up extending him

Seider + Perron replaces Nylander's production and Marco + first is the added value

We're also trading within the division, so that jacks up the price. I'm just saying, if the Red Wings want Nylander, that will the best. If not, look elsewhere for a player of his calibre

I would use some comps. There is nothing in the history of NHL trades that suggests any rental player returns this much.

The Red Wings don't want Nylander. 99% of all Nylander trades on this site are from Toronto fans.

Red Wings have nobody I want outside of Seider if I'm being honest. Also, trading within the division rises in price

Starting to sound like all of the Sens fans.

Bad troll response to a Devil's fan proposal lol.

Edit: wait, you're responding to Edvinsson++ for him lmao dude. Leafs fans are unreal.

Wings fans highly overrate Edvinsson and highly underrated Nylander. Edvinsson + a roster player + a pick is probably what it would take. You don’t get elite offensive creating players like Nylander for mediocre players. If the show was on the other foot, you’d be asking the sun and the moon.

This is the worst overvalue of a player I have ever seen. Mo is 1 of 1 in the entire NHL. Is he as good as Nylander? No. But if you want a guy who does what Mo does, you're gunna have to overpay back. I know it's a meme, but Hall for Larsson is a pretty similar trade to what this would be. Mo for Nylander 1 for 1 would be a massive return for Toronto.

Are you the guy that said you'd rather have Heinola than Edvinsson? If so, I'll safely disregard this take.
If not, I don't think rentals are worth that much, but even if so, doesn't make much sense for Detroit.

You forgot Nylander and mathews both sign an extension.

Aftet the extensions the leafs add in to the wings trade, Nylander, mathews, marner all at 50% retained plus 5 first round picks.

This is more accurate then your worst trade proposal of all.time.

Why would the Leafs even consider? Like I said, if the Red Wings want Nylander, pay the package I proposed. If not, look for another talent elsewhere

Leafs aren't doing it for any cheaper

Same way seravalli said teams are basically expecting the sharks to give away karlsson, I can’t imagine it will be that different for nylander.

Karlsson had one great season in the last four and is six years older. Nylander has been durable and productive. He's a much safer asset and would 100% not pass through waivers. No team would pickup Karlsson if he could even be put on waivers.

Plenty of top wingers have been traded in their final year of a contract, so that there are enough comps to get realistic range of returns. For example...

Patches for Tatar, Suzuki, 2nd
Tarasenko for Skinner, Blais, 1st, 4th
Stone for Brannstrom, 2nd
Duchene for Abramov, Davidsson, 1st
Ryan for Silfverberg, Noesen, 1st

None have a top-10 prospect in the return. In fact, here is a list of all the most recent trades including a forward for a top-10 prospect

2017 Jonathan Drouin (for Mikhail Sergachev)
2013 Martin Erat (for Filip Forsberg)
2011 Mike Richards (for Brayden Schenn)
2001 Eric Lindros (for Pavel Brendl)
2001 Jaromir Jagr (for Kris Beach)
1999 Ziggy Palffy (for Olli Jokinen)
1997 Gary Roberts (for Jean-Sebastien Giguere)

Prospects like Edvinsson rarely get traded. And none of those guys were rentals.

Stick to the comps

If you're willing to give Nylander $10M+ a season he will sign an extension.

Leafs could still sign Nylander to whatever he is asking, doesn't mean we have to or want to, but if there is no package out there, we could STILL extend him if it comes down to it

And I hope they do. He’d be more worth the investment than Tavares.

Totally agree. Just making the point that we on acgm probably undervalue cap space compared to actual gm’s. I mean who wouldn’t want these players, but we don’t deal with the reality of how many players worth over 8m a season can you afford on one roster?

I think a simple comparison would be if both could hypothetically be placed on a waivers, teams would make roster moves to acquire Nylander at his current cap hit. Karlsson would easily pass through waivers.

Edited Jul. 27, 2023 at 7:54 p.m.. Reason: Bonus idea and I'd rather edit the duplicated post than make a new one.
Edit: I hate when my posts duplicate themselves. Happens on mobile and not sure why.

Edit 2: The Leafs don't have full leverage here, Nylander does. He's a UFA and can easily walk next offseason if he doesn't get the value he wants.
