Realistic Laf Trade

Created by: EQuinn31
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 9, 2023
Published: Aug. 9, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
MTL
  1. Lafrenière, Alexis [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Agree to sign contract after trade. 3 years 4.5 AAV
NYR
  1. Dach, Kirby
  2. 2025 1st round pick (MTL)
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
In my opinion, this is what Montreal would have to give up for Lafrenière. Which I wouldn't want to do this as a Habs fan. I still think the NYR would want more on top of this as well.

Can Dach play on the right wing? Because there would otherwise be no room for him at center on the Rangers.

Regardless, I greatly appreciate that this is not another Josh Anderson and C-level prospect for Laf trade proposal lol.

Yeah I anticipated Dach moving to the Wing for this one lol. Everyone thinks Laf is worth nothing at this stage, which his value is down sure but he still has time to develop. Hes been in a crap situation the last 2 years imo

I still think the Rangers would be looking for that in return, even though he isn't worth that. A team is going to have to overpay massively for him for the Rangers to do it

It would have to be an overpay. You are correct but this is extreme. The Habs are still a lottery team the next 2 years especially if they lose Dach.

It will have to be something like Guhle/Dach. You are correct but i doubt much more is added as the Rangers want immediate cheap help and the Habs arent giving up valuable futures.

There is no trade fit here.

And, that doesnt even mention all the pressure Laffy faces in Montreal.

At this point, I don't think I would swap Dach for Laf 1 for 1. Even through Dach had a slow start to his development as well, he's taken big strides forward and is very good at his 200 foot game.

Laf hasn't shown any of that yet. He's poor defensively and his offensive impact is anemic, and his skating hasn't improved enough since he was drafted.

Don't see the Habs doing this, their 2025 first will probably be too early to reasonably give up

Agreed. Some Habs fans are delusional for the trade potential for Laffy. This is a habs fan talking too.

I'm tired of the Laffy to Montreal crap lol

I agree 100%. I think its way too much, but that is what they would have to give up to acquire him. Not Anderson, Beck and a 3rd lol (like i've seen)

Laffy still has good value. But there's no way it's as high as when he was drafted.

Today, is Laffy a better player than Dach? Then you're adding a 1st and a 2nd.

That being said, I believe Laffy has the higher ceiling. He's still 21 and should improve.

Rangers should keep him.

Right there with you on that. Dach > Laf by a mile. I just wanted to show what the Habs would have to give up to get him, and it isn't worth it at this stage.

Massive overpay for the Habs lol, which I don't see them doing. Thats how highly they value Laffy in my opinion. Just doesn't make sense for them to trade at this stage

It is a massive overpay for sure but that’s the cost for him, we need him more than we need random prospects.

A young player born in Montreal, bring him home! (thats the argument lol)

Same thing with PLD. Whenever a Quebec player is involved, everyone wants them in Montreal

Agreed. Rangers shouldn't be shopping him. Let him develop. I said the same thing about Slafkovsky, start him in Laval and let him develop. He's 19 lol. Don't need Galchenyuk pt 2

Carolina/Jersey will be mainstays for years after their tidy offseason business. Panarin regression might be already here. They have an awesome backend with Miller/Fox and Shesty though. They'll always be a threat come the playoffs to go on a run with that type of build from the net out for awhile.

Its just plain bigotry that we see on this site way too often.

The "oh he is french so the habs definitely want him". Is lazy and not rooted in facts.

If you go back and look at trades where the habs netted more francophones than they gave up and you have literally 1 NHL example in almost 20 years (drouin) and a coupke minor league deals.

Its not something they do in fact they have actually largely avoided it over the years

I would be interested in Laffy it didn't cost an arm and a leg to get him. He is young, and we've seen the effect MSL has on players. Hoping Newhook pans out like Dach has so far.
