Trade Deadline if Team is Bad

Created by: BluesReport18
Team: 2023-24 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 29, 2023
Published: Aug. 29, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
STL
  1. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
I have a feeling Blais will be in huge demand at the trade deadline. He is cheap and a perfect playoff performer. He is also due for a major breakout year with the Blues.
2.
STL
  1. Suzuki, Ryan
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
Vrana is what Carolina is always missing in the playoffs. A go to goal scorer. Vrana will be another player that will be in high demand due to his small salary.
3.
STL
  1. Rasmussen, Michael
Additional Details:
I think Detroit is about to go all in. I think Rasmussen has a ton of potential still but I would bet he is pushed down the lineup this year. Kapanen and Bortz fit the playoff mold and could provide reliable defensive play to an already old team.
If Rasmussen is in the top 6 on detroit at the time this obviously doesn't happen but I think detroit sucks at developing prospects so my guess is he will be dropped into the bottom 6.
DET
  1. Bortuzzo, Robert
  2. Kapanen, Kasperi ($1,600,000 retained)
4.
STL
Any contender looking for defensive help. Florida fits as their defense has faced a lot of injuries recently and they learned how important depth was in the playoffs.
    FLA
    1. Scandella, Marco ($1,637,500 retained)

How is Detroit old when their forward core is all under 30 w/ only exception being Perron?

Calling Vrana a go to goal scorer when he has 24 goals in 2 years is brave... he's WAY too injury prone to pay anything serious for.

By old I meant getting older. All of the additions were veteran players instead of letting their highly touted prospects play.
    Copp - 29
    Perron - 35
    Compher - 28
    Sprong and Fischer - 26
    DeBrincat - 25

Of that group the only two I would take is Perron and DeBrincat. The rest I would rather play prospects like Rasmussen, Berggren, Veleno, Mazur, Soderblom, Kasper, etc... the list goes on and on. Those young players just don't have spots anymore so based on that building Yzerman will be looking for more veterans at the deadline.

The trade would rely on him being healthy... you wouldn't trade that for an injured player I think that's obvious.
When Vrana is healthy, he is tops in the league in goals per game.

Okay, are you really trying to use goals per game for a player that played like 20 games last year? Come on. Even when he's healthy, his career high is 25 goals. Carolina have that with Necas, Svechnikov, Aho. It doesn't make sense. If they're going to make a forward addition, it needs to be an impact player. Vrana is more of a depth piece. He's only hit 20 goals twice in his career.

sorry dont see blais getting close to a 1st - rental, only last year ever played more than 40 games, last year 25 pts (decent) other 5 years 39 pts.
Vrana @ 5,25m not a small salary, he hasnt scored in 7 years in NHL over 20 G but twice (24 & 25 years ago), last year had 11G and spent time in AHL, dont see a 2nd or close to it and STL prolly need to 50%
the DET trade maybe, seems like moving some spare parts around

cant see EDM or CAR touching those trades

Doubtful Blais and Vrana fetch those returns, and considering the acquisition cost for Vrana and the return for Blais both heavily favor the Blues, wouldn't make sense for either.
Wings trade seems like a good starting point though, can see them moving on from Ras.

I still wouldn't call it old by any means... Veteran is still a slight stretch though most of those guys have 6-8 years in the league..... More NHL experienced guys sure, but still old definitely wrong wording choice

What would Scandella’s value be? He definitely fits in with what the Panthers need for this season.

Detroit isn't going to be buying at the TDL even if by chance they happened to make it to the playoffs which isn't going to happen. So why would Detroit give up a 24yr old that they really like for a 34yr old Dman making under $1M a season and 27yr old forward who has played on 2 of the best offenses in the league and has been very underwhelming. I'm sorry but even if Detroit was looking to move Rasmussen this wouldn't even come close.

No need to rush the prospects. Rather play the kids A LOT in AHL than give them 3rd-4th line minutes in the NHL. There is always the trading option if a prospect is too good for the minors.

Lets say Yzerman didn't sign Sprong, Fischer, Kostin and Copmher…etc and the prospects aren't quite ready yet. What would you suggest as the plan then? We can't have 5-8 AHL level guys in the lineup anymore.

i feel like the blues should sell even harder than this. look to dump cap (especially ones with term that won’t fit the window). hayes + krug are two names that could be highly sought after if they’re made available, especially with retention

Not much. Probably similar return to the Jaycob Megna trade last year.

Canes don’t do rentals that cost more than 3rd and a so so prospect. Pass, not that Vrana and his baggage is worth it

I mean the Detroit roster right now is just stuck being mid. If it were me I would've given Berggren and Rasmussen clear top 6 roles this year and Kasper should be the third line center for the entire year (still playing good minutes but not against the elite players). I'd also like to see Soderblom and Kasper on the third line together. Playing nothing but big AHL minutes clearly doesn't work in developing at some point you have to get to the NHL. Look how a lot of Detroit prospects have struggled. Yzerman needs to promote from within instead of bringing in so many outside players. And I get players with elite talent like Debrincat or really old vets like Perron (who can be a filler and mentor) but guys like copp and compher make no sense. And don't even get me started on the defensive signings.

Yes. Look at the demand for cheap power forwards in the past and the impact they make on a playoff run for some teams (I.E. Barbashev for the Knights last year). Ryan Hartman got a first a while back, Folingo got a first, Jeannot got the world, the list goes on. A healthy Blais on this Blues team could have a big year which would get a big return at the deadline. Simple

Probably one of the worst takes on Detroit I have ever seen. Blais doesn't get a first. I'm hoping Vrana succeeds though. Not opposed to adding Bortuzzo but you are bonkers in thinking we are trading Ras for him and Kapanen is just straight cap dump, no need for him.

I would say as a reasonable best case scenario...

    Vrana @50% gets a 2nd + late rd pick
    Blais gets a 3rd
    Bortuzzo gets a 3rd
    Kapanen @50% gets a 3rd

Maybe Vrana really pops this year and becomes a more premium trade piece on the market but as it stands these are essentially depth additions for any team. Remember, the Blues got them for almost nothing. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be traded if the team is out of the playoff hunt though. Only guy that you could make a case to extend would be Vrana, but it would have to be a short/friendly deal IMO. Would be a nice time to grab a few picks and open up spots for the younger guys.

Vrana got booted out of Washington and then booted out of Detroit. Odds are he'll wear his welcome out in St. Louis after a few weeks this season too.

Vrana is 50% retained (2.6m). If the Blues double retain and he’s traded at 1.3m, that could easily net a 2nd if he scores 20+ goals before the TDL
