From The Core Four To The Nuclear One

Created by: KingExLeafs
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 31, 2023
Published: Aug. 31, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trade Nylander and Marner. They want to compare themselves to Matthews and be paid based on the pay scale he has established but they're not Matthews and never will be. Marner doesn't deserve a raise, so him asking for 12 + on his next contract, which he is expected to, is a joke. Trade him now. And Nylander is not a 10 million dollar player, so why overpay for him just to keep him? Trade him too.

As for JT, he'll probably stay around and play in the 3C role on a much cheaper deal, which means the Leafs need to trade both Marner and Nylander for another elite center to play behind Matthews and a bona-fide number 1 defenceman to play ahead of Rielly.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Pettersson, Elias
Additional Details:
Deadline deal as it appears that Pettersson won't resign in Vancouver because they're out of the playoffs once again. Pettersson has made it clear that he wants to sign for a competitive team that makes the playoffs every year.
VAN
  1. Liljegren, Timothy
  2. Nylander, William
  3. 2024 1st round pick (TOR)
2.
TOR
  1. Power, Owen
  2. Skinner, Jeff
Additional Details:
Power is due a big raise much like Dahlin, so where is the money coming from? Removing the Skinner contract will be a big challenge for Buffalo. I think it'll make sense for Buffalo to package Skinner with Power and go big game hunting, landing a top playmaker to play with either Thompson or Cozens.

Canucks pass. If your Pettersson wanting out scenario were true, Vancouver would want younger players and draft picks not a pending UFA who wants to get paid.

Vancouver's management would still want to try to make the playoffs in the years ahead to possibly entice Hughes to stay and keep the owner happy. They won't tear it all down.

Leafs easily pass the Sabres trade. Skinner is a cap dump and Owen Power is a soft defensemen. No thanks

If they are out of the playoff race with Pettersson, trading him for Nylander won't get them there.

Canucks pass. The only way the Leafs can get Pettersson is if it’s Pettersson+ for Matthews. Nothing else makes sense for the Canucks

Nylander could come with an 8 year extension at 2.5m and Van still laughs at you and hangs up.

Canucks easily decline. If Pettersson wants out because it's not a winning team, what makes you think Nylander will want to extend when the team is objectively worse without Pettersson and he's going from a top cup contender to a bottom 10 team in the league? Pettersson for Nylander makes zero sense from the Canucks perspective.

Sabres pass
They don’t even consider this

And, your logic is faulty as well
We have plenty of Cap Room coming up to extend Dahlin AND Power

The Cap isn’t a problem for us in the slightest

So naturally to make the playoffs in years ahead they trade for a pending UFA that leaves their 2C as... Pius Suter. Yeah that's totally realistic

They can sign a center next offseason in free agency, possibly Lindholm, Scheifele, Stephenson, or trade for one.

Or the really young teams with value contracts

We don’t want Marner
And we aren’t trading Power
The End

The genius plan of praying that a centre signs for a non playoff Canadian market for cheap. Why don't more teams just do that!

Teams always trade their best 2-way player that is the only guy on the team on the #1 unit in every situation. They don't move around guys to play with Matthews, Willie or JT if their slumping it's Marner. Marner is the gas that gets the other engines going and it wouldn't matter who his center is, he will produce, the other way around the centers production drops without him on their wing.

You know who else they could sign in free agency? William Nylander

Yea, definitely. But in order to keep the cap number down it'll be better to trade for him and sign him to an eight year extension.
