Definitely not, remove Ylonen and Kovacevic and downgrade that pick to a fifth

Are you kidding me? This has to be a troll.

Kubalik is worth between a 3rd and a 4th right now and Brannstrom is worth a high 3rd or a low 2nd.

Brannstrom offers no value to us with all our LD and LD prospects. I think we would prefer to keep Kovacevic and Ylonen over trading for Kubalik, even if the value is fair

And we already have our small LD, Hutson. Which I'd take anytime over Brannstrom.

It's not about the value of the individual players.

It's about the Sens being insolvent.

As many have mentioned above LD and pending UFAs are not things that MTL would have any interest in acquiring.

I agree about LD, but in term of pending UFA we could if it's a cap dump situation with some sort of a sweetener. Otherwise no, indeed.

Yeah I agree.

By "acquiring" I meant they wouldn't spend assets to get LD and UFA, though If another team wants to pay to offload those then that's a different story.

Totally agree, habs aren't moving picks for guys we don't need. Wouldn't mind moving Ylonen tho, I don't really see a future where he's a Hab.

For Ylonen I wouldn't be opposed to moving him either but I just don't think there is much interest or value out there for him right now. In the mean time I think he fills his role quite well and I personally prefer seeing him on the ice than the likes of Pearson or Armia while the younger prospects develop in more appropriate environments.

Maybe, but neither make any sense for Montreal. Kubalik is just a rental blocking development time for prospects and Montreal has 3 sophomore LD and afew really strong LD prospects, Brannstrom doesn't have value to them.

It's all about being the wrong time of year. Not many teams would would want them for more than a later pick, if at all. Take Kovacevik out to make this fair, they'd probably beg you to take Evans back

You'd be able to recoup a 2nd and maybe more for Kubalik at the deadline. Same for Brannstrom, you'd be able to make a nice profit at some point

Note that If Dorion didn't mess things up, I would never look to do that

But the point for Montreal is that despite the LD prospects and the UFA status of Kubalik, you don't have to keep players forever, you buy low sell high since you are in a rebuild. Dorion is easy to benefit from so the trade is made for that. Unless you think Ylonen and Kovacevic would return more than two 2nds or something like that?

They are worth that in a normal context, not now. You still can’t sign Pinto. No way we help you if we don’t get a big discount

I'm not sure in which world people live to be honest so I'm not really trying to understand anymore. The world I live in is there :

https://www.capfriendly.com/trades?min-players=1

How come Leafs got help?
How come the Canucks got help?
How come the Panthers got help?
How come the Stars got help?
How come the Knights got help?
Etc.

Players have the value each team allocate them in regards to their cap hit, term, age, health status, etc. The NHL is not Cap Friendly lol. Both Kubalik and Brannstrom are positive assets

The 31 other NHL teams don't make a zoom call to say "hey everybody, let's not help Ottawa!"

Someone will trade for a player when they have a NEED or see the possibility to make a PROFIT. It's almost like some of you have no idea how life works.

I just don't think MTL has any interest in doing that, sure Kubalik could either help the top 9 or help getting some more picks down the road but Montreal isn't in any rush compared to Ottawa.

I don't think they wanna move Kovacevic when he looked like one of our better dman during the pre-season. I'm not saying he's an elite dman don't get me wrong, but teams normally value Big RD that can play physical and defensive more than a small LD with some offensive upside.

I also don't think Montreal has any interest in moving a pick for players we have no need for. We already have a bunch of forwards, and there's Dvorak injured. As for Ylonen, he probably doesn't have much value, but I don't think habs wants another LD whether it's a fair deal or not.

None of those teams had a young player unsigned and no cap space.

Teams will take them if they are free, they aren’t gonna pay when they could just wait and exploit Dorion even more. And not a single team have a need and the cap space for Brannstrom or Kubalik. They might take it for an unnecessary luxury but again, it would be for free

This isn't close; Kovacevic is by far the most valuable piece from Montreal's perspective. If the players you're trading away have value on the market, Ottawa should trade them to the teams that would value them.

I understand where you're coming from but I respectfully disagree about the potential upside of the deal from MTL's perspective.

Firstly I don't believe that Brannstrom carries much value in the league right now, nor do I believe this to change in the short term. Recent trade trends suggest that undersized defensemen aren't in much demand by most teams, especially if those defensemen aren't elite offensively. I firmly believe it would be far easier to get value at the deadline for Kovacevich than Brannstrom. Not only is Kovacevich half a foot taller but he also shoots right and had all of 3 fewer points than Brannstrom last season while costing less than league minimum and less than half of Brannstrom's cap.

For Kubalik's part I don't disagree that he could likely recoup value at the deadline but that would require extra effort to showcase him and likely retention on his contract by MTL. This is where his opportunity cost comes into play since MTL only have 1 retention slot remaining, which they are likely keeping for Monahan. Using a broker would eat into the expected return and reduces the overall upside of the Sens-Habs trade.

In short I believe Kovacevich is not only more important to MTL currently than Brannstrom would be, but also likely holds more value across the league so this part doesn't work for me. Next while I would trade Ylonen for Kubalik I would not include a 3rd because this would significantly reduce the upside of this trade for MTL. While Kubalik would return more than Ylonen (likely around a 2nd based on comparables) this would only result in marginal value if any (about 15 slots between the 2nd and 3rd round picks minus the broker fee of a 4th or 5th).

Sens fans getting desperate lmao

Youre going to have to move some high picks if you want cap space, Dorion's asset management has been atrocious and every GM in the league knows it.
