Potential Trade Deadline Targets To Consider

Created by: Bbpagewolf
Team: 2023-24 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 3, 2023
Published: Dec. 3, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is just a list of potential targets. Not doing any actual hypothetical trades.
Trades
1.
NYR
  1. Foligno, Nick
Additional Details:
Foligno is one of those guys who’s probably on his last legs and would like to have one more shot at a Stanley Cup. Salary would have to be retained, but Foligno would be a solid veteran add that could bring some grit and experience to a contending team.
CHI
2.
NYR
  1. Danforth, Justin
Additional Details:
I don’t know if the Blue Jackets would trade within the division, but if the Rangers feel the need to add to their 4th line depth and add someone cheap, I don’t think you can go wrong with Danforth.
CBJ
3.
NYR
  1. Gostisbehere, Shayne
Additional Details:
Salary would have to be retained, but if things go south for someone like Erik Gustafsson at any point, and if Zac Jones continues to prove he’s not an NHL defenseman, then Gostisbehere could be the perfect addition for the Rangers defense and the perfect offensive defensive partner for Braden Schneider. However, Gustafsson has still been really good so far so this one may not even be necessary.
DET
4.
NYR
  1. Perron, David
Additional Details:
If the idea of bringing Patrick Kane back to New York doesn’t work out, then Perron could be the fallback option. Salary would need to be retained, but the Rangers would probably appreciate a pure goal scoring right winger in their top 6. Perron, despite his age, fits the bill perfectly.
DET
5.
NYR
  1. Gagner, Sam
Additional Details:
If the Rangers are looking to add a depth scorer and a cheap option, you can’t really go wrong with a player like Gagner. Plus, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind getting a chance to play for the team his Dad began his career with.
EDM
6.
NYR
  1. Bogosian, Zach
Additional Details:
Could be a possible 7th defenseman option in order to add some depth in case of injuries.
MIN
7.
NYR
  1. Foligno, Marcus
Additional Details:
Salary would have to retained, but like his brother, he would be a solid veteran add and he could bring some grit to a contending team.
MIN
8.
NYR
  1. Zuccarello, Mats
Additional Details:
Salary would have to be retained, but this is probably the move that most Rangers fans want to see happen. Zuccarello was a fan favorite in New York and now that the Rangers are back in a position to contend, I don’t see why a reunion would be entirely out of a question. We know what Zuccarello is, he knows the organization very well, and he could be the missing ingredient for Kreider and Zibanejad.
MIN
9.
NYR
  1. Smith, Cole
Additional Details:
Let’s be honest…Smith is probably the most Rangers player ever that the Rangers would go after. He’s not even really that good, but I have a feeling they’re gonna look into it.
NSH
10.
NYR
  1. Kubalik, Dominik
Additional Details:
Salary would have to be retained, but Kubalik could thrive better on a better team. He’d be a nice addition for depth scoring and he perhaps could develop some chemistry with someone like Filip Chytil if/when Chytil returns.
OTT
11.
NYR
  1. Tarasenko, Vladimir
Additional Details:
Like Patrick Kane, you know Tarasenko will be considered, and if it works out he might be more of a consideration than Kane. Tarasenko’s time in New York was brief, but very memorable. So I’m sure the Rangers would love to bring him back. Salary would need to be retained, but he could really be a nice addition on a line with Kreider and Zibanejad.
OTT
12.
NYR
  1. Duclair, Anthony
Additional Details:
The player that many Rangers fans feel never should’ve been traded to begin with, now has an open opportunity to return to New York. Salary would have to be retained, but Duclair has played better than what his stats show. On a better team, he numbers will go up drastically, and he could be the unsung scoring piece that the Rangers could be looking for.
SJS
13.
NYR
  1. Eberle, Jordan
Additional Details:
With the Kraken underachieving this season, the writing seems to be on the wall that Eberle will probably get traded at the deadline. Salary would have to be retained and in this particular case salary may also have to be moved out, but we know the kind of talent that Eberle possesses when he’s on his game, and he could ultimately prove to be a great rental piece for the Rangers top 6. A change of scenery could be all it takes to get him going.
SEA
14.
NYR
  1. Kapanen, Kasperi
Additional Details:
Salary would have to be retained, and this is probably a player that the Rangers would not target unless there were no other options available, but I think that Kapanen could be an interesting experiment if nothing else. The Blues currently hold a wild card position at the time of posting this ACGM though so as of now this probably won’t happen. Still a last resort to consider though.
STL
15.
NYR
  1. Stamkos, Steven
Additional Details:
This is probably the biggest stretch of them all and I don’t expect it to happen as getting Stamkos might be more of an offseason exploration cause not only would salary need to be retained, but someone like Kaapo Kakko or anyone else with some salary would have to be moved out as well. However, the Lightning are in a weird position now as they currently do not hold a playoff spot at the time of posting this ACGM. If things go south for them and they realize they won’t be a playoff team, then Stamkos could be this season’s Patrick Kane and if the Rangers eye an opportunity to acquire him, they absolutely must take it as adding him basically fills their biggest hole all by himself. Do I expect the Rangers to get Stamkos? Probably not. However, it is something to consider if the opportunity presents itself.
TBL
16.
NYR
  1. Domi, Max
Additional Details:
Another option that probably isn’t likely cause I don’t think he really fits the Rangers style of play very well, but I guess if they desperate enough and if the Maple Leafs fall out of playoff contention by the deadline then they may make something happen. Salary would have to be retained, but Domi is talented and can be useful if he’s put in the right situation.
TOR
17.
NYR
  1. Lindholm, Elias
Additional Details:
Salary would have to be retained, but he can play both center and right wing, and if he does move to the wing perhaps there’s that he and fellow Swede Mika Zibanejad could develop some strong chemistry together. Things are not going well in Calgary right now and that includes frustrated players who want out. Lindholm is one of those players. He could end up being exactly what the Rangers need.
CGY
18.
NYR
  1. Kane, Patrick
Additional Details:
Obviously this will be a consideration by Chris Drury and company, for Kane is familiar with the Rangers and he clearly wants to end up on a winning team. I doubt he’d object to a return to New York. Salary would need to be retained, but it is a known fact that the Rangers biggest need is right wing scoring. Kane, who is one of the best players in the league despite his age, could ultimately be the guy the Rangers go after if the Red Wings prove to be a team that won’t go to the playoffs.

The problem is cap. They were on pace to have roughly $3m cap by trade deadline. But since they’ve been using LTIR, they would be lucky to reach $1.5m

So a lot of guys would need double retention and might not be worth it

I think both Folignos, Danforth, Bogosian, Kapanen, Eberle, Duclair, Zucc (would love to see this one), Smith, Lindholm and Stamkos are all options I could 100% see happening.

All of the other guys I don't think get moved at all just due to the fact that their teams are 100% buyers come deadline

Maybe if cheap Danforth or Duke. Pass on the others, either cause of cap/return/not for sale/not an upgrade. I really like Monahan especially with Chytil uncertainty & Kakko no go. I had Purssyman from NSH high on my list til i watched him last night, price just went down, same with Novak

Elias Lindholm or Steven Stamkos would be fun. Duclair for Goodrow + 1st could be something of interest.

Wild already extended Zuccarello and Foligno, so I doubt they're interested in retaining salary for multiple years.

Maataa, Holl, Petry, Walman, Chiarot, Seider, Edvinsson, Willander. Also the underlyings behind them don't look great.

He isn’t part of the future. He is the perfect rental when retained. If he really gels all the way to the deadline, sell him for the assets and re-sign in the summer if needed.

Underlyings? Who cares? They're in a playoff spot right now. Just because the Devils are underachieving doesn't mean you have to crap on the Red Wings.

Wallinder hasn't played an NHL game. 🤔

I forgot. That's the Red Wings fan's way on CFACGM. Trade every player who wasn't drafted by them. 🤔

Presumably the Red Wings analytics department. The team has 6 other veteran dmen (all with term that makes them harder to move). They have 2 quality defensive prospects who should potentially be getting NHL looks (they can't slide anymore).

By the deadline they probably aren't contenders, and so Ghost, based on his play, lack of term, and lack of long term role, would be the guy to sell.

They were in a playoff spot this time last year too. Surely Hronek and Bertuzzi don't hit the market

You think the red wings as currently assembled are contenders? I wouldn't even say they're an NYI type team where 1 goalie could take them all the way

In a 7 game series give me NJD, Car, NYR, NYI, Pitt, Boston, Florida, Tampa, Toronto, Ottawa, Buffalo over them (you can argue about a few of these teams but you get the point)

While this exploration is well thought, I don't think anyone other than Duc is on their "list". If there's a player who may have Drury's attention, consider a young player with entry level term like Paul Cotter ($775k for 3 yrs) in Vegas. In terms of defense, a teammate: Nicholas Hague ($2.29M for 2 years), who in my opinion has been underutilized by the Golden Knights.

Both players are huge (Cotter: 6'3", 215 lbs; Hague: 6'6", 230 lbs) and are solid skaters in both zones. Coming here with youthful Stanley Cup experience, can be such an asset.

Danforth, Zuccarello, and M. Foligno all have recently signed extensions through at least next year. Foligno and Zuccarello have full NMCs. None of those three are likely going anywhere anytime soon.

New York isn't exactly a hard place to convince someone to waive to

Not mine, but if you feel like casting the wide net that’s all you. Feel free to view my posts if you want more details.

Just looking more long term and he is a guy that screams mercenary for playoff teams. If needed (depending on roster next summer) I would love having him back with the Wings.

No, but teams typically don't trade players they extend and give full NMCs before the contract extension has even kicked in.

Stamkos as a Ranger would be insane, and I could see them making a move for Tarasenko again if OTT doesn't get back in contention. Reuniting with Duclair seems to make the most sense of the bunch though.

I don't see a scenario where the RW trade Kane. He signed with the Red Wings and turned down multi-year deals from other teams. He hand picked his destination, and he is made it known he doesn't want to be traveling from team to team to team to finish his career.

I think the leadership that Foligno is providing the Hawks has been greatly appreciated. Only way the Hawks trade him are if he specifically asks to be moved.
