Ben Chiarot (who was and is much worse than Tanev), was traded for a 1st, 4th, and a prospect.. how can you justify paying only a 1st and a 4th for Tanev for DOUBLE retention plus you also receive picks as well?
Awful return for Calgary. They’ll get a better one elsewhere.
double retention does not impact calgary. calgary is retaining 50%. Chiarot was retained at 50%. in this trade, the canucks are paying anaheim for the additional retention.
you may think chiarot is worse, but he was very highly valued by both montreal and florida. he played 23:33 per night in montreal before the trade (led the team) and then played 20:56 per night for florida after the trade. he was viewed as a top pairing dman and ate up a lot of the minutes before ekblad came back from injury.
also, the chiarot trade is universally viewed as an overpay with hindsight
obviously, chiarots physical style and net front play was very highly valued (read: overvalued). he was also 30, not 34. this is also why he was able to command a 4 year 4.75 million contract after that season.
he was the 2nd highest value defenceman that season for trade return, only hampus lindholm got more who was in his prime and is universally seen as better better.
giordano was traded at 50% retained for two 2nds and a 3rd. kulak 50% was a 2nd, a 7th, and a prospect. leddy at 50% was trade for walman (before he broke out), a 2nd and a cap dump in sunqvist. Manson at 50% retained was a 2nd and a prospect. and that's all just form the 2022 deadline when chiarot was moved!
this trade is completely in line with comparables and you are selecting the most lopsided trade you can to juice tanevs value.
tanev plays 18:44 per night, which is significantly less than weegar (22:04), hanafin (23:11) and andersson (24:23). in fact, his usage is most similar to how zadorov (18:24) was used, and we all know what calgary ended up getting for zadorov in a trade.
trading a #4/#5, 34 year old dman who mostly plays 3rd pairing minutes 5v5 and top pk minutes, who is a rental and has a history of injury problems and getting a first back is impressive. the only reason why its possible is because tanev is very good at what he does, but he is far from a 1st pairing dman like he was from 2014-2022. his played has slowed down and he would be probably the 4th or 5th most used dman on the canucks.
