What would be the market for selling Dougie

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2024-25 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 5, 2024
Published: Jan. 5, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don’t want to sell him, but would have to be considered for a few reasons….

1. Nemec has played well beyond expectations and unlikely he is ever sent down again.
2. We have Marino locked up.
3. Dougie history…3 years in Boston, 3 years in Calgary, 3 years in Carolina, 3 years in New Jersey…(for fans of symmetry)
4. Big cap hit
5. Luke already replaced Dougie on PP1 before the injury.
6. It makes for good outside-the-box ACGM (the real reason)

Where would he go?

- Probably outside the division
- Team with cap space
- Team on bubble
- Team that needs top-4 RHD
- Team with need for offensive dman
- Team he would waive NTC to

Rough guess….
Arizona
Buffalo
Calgary (again)
Florida (if Forsling and/or Montour move on)
Minnesota
Nashville
St Louis
Winnipeg

How much would get?

Some comps to consider
- Subban: Two 2nds and lesser pieces.
- Karlsson: Five overpaid guys and 1st
- Jones: two 1sts, 2nd
- Weber: Subban

I don’t think NJD would have much interest in picks only transaction. So would probably look for something like a lesser defensive dman plus a forward or goalie.

----

Again, I don’t think we move him. But am curious what the Dougie market would look like.

There wouldn't be a huge market just because of the cap hit but he has a full nmc doesn't he so it would make it even harder.

He's had some long injuries too. Isn't he LTIR right now?

*Cracks knuckles*

Armia, Allen, Savard and a 4th.

My job here is done.

Edit: I guess I could also give a realistic response also haha. I think your parameters will ultimately have to bend a little as so few teams can make that work. I think taking the futures off the table is not the way to go as you could just flip those futures for the thing you want from other teams and is probably the best option IMHO. So maybe find the best value trade available and work a 3 way with another team or simply go and get the individual things you wanted from the deal in separate deals using the futures you got from the Hamilton trade.

Dougie at full price: 1st+ (karlsson comp)
22.5 million dollars in retention: necas+Morrow (honestly probably a touch light for this much retention
Mcleod: 1st

Seems like you're getting a bargain

We’ll keep him. You asked for a star RD, 22.5 million dollars in retention, and another quality young center. And were shocked when it costs you big

Not shocked, but just consider the luminosity of the star you refer to. Canes know the player well, and how good he can be. But ‘star’ is a bit much. He’s good, not great and there is a reason the Canes didn’t re-sign.

Good luck, especially in the playoffs if he’s healthy.

I'm aware of what dougie is. which is why I didn't ask for much for him. I had a 1st, and a part of that pays for the retention and the+ i'd ask for on Mcleod.

Necas=2 1sts
Morrow=1.5 1sts (equal with Seamus casey)
2 1sts=2 1sts
Total: 5.5 1sts

22.5 mill= 3.75 1sts
Mcleod=1.25 1sts
Total: 5 1sts

So 9 mill dougie here costs like a 2nd

Any team acquiring Dougie would regret it. M
He is slowing and injury prone. He is 2 years from being an boat anchor

Well he had a career year last year, and scored an overtime game winner in the playoffs.
While he may be injury prone, I dont think hes slowing down yet..

The biggest factor is whether Dougie approves a trade lol. He's changed teams 3 times already and I doubt he wants to move again.

There's a reason he has a full NTC and has big signing bonuses on the back end of his contract.

probably gonna have to pay another team to take his albatross of a contract. I'd say Dougie a 1st and a 2nd for future considerations would be the most realistic deal

Considering Trouba is actually a good player he'd probably net a decent package in return but there'd be no reason for the Rangers to trade such a valuable piece so it's not even a relevant thought experiment

Trouba has been getting outchanced by the opposing team when he’s on the ice for 6 years and counting now.

Has he considered playing better?

Trouba is +9, Hamilton is -8. Trouba has double the points excluding PP, which is is not on, and he actually plays defense unlike Hamilton. Plus he isn't a locker room cancer who has never lasted longer than three years on a team. Plus he is an actual leader. Hamilton wishes he was Trouba.
