Team: 2023-24 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 28, 2024
Published: Jan. 28, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Yes I know the Sabres are not going to move out 5 guys at the deadline, this is just for fun.
Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Manson, Josh
  2. 2024 1st round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
I doubt Manson would waive, but he is exactly the type of D the Sabres need.
COL
  1. Johnson, Erik ($1,625,000 retained)
  2. Mittelstadt, Casey
Additional Details:
Avs get a very affordable 2C on pace to score 70 points on a bad team and a familiar face to replace Manson in the lineup. Cash is about the same so it would not create a cap issue.
2.
BUF
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Tampa gets an affordable vet wing who can still score in the right spots
TBL
  1. Okposo, Kyle
Additional Details:
Kyle gets to chase a cup.
3.
BUF
  1. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Price might seem high, but Edmonton is going for broke and this gives them a middle pair RHD who is affordable and has team control.
EDM
  1. Jokiharju, Henri
  2. 2024 4th round pick (BUF)
4.
BUF
  1. 2024 6th round pick (PIT)
PIT
  1. Girgensons, Zemgus
Additional Details:
Just feels like it's going to happen. Sabres could retain for a higher pick.

Unless someone goes on LTIR until the playoffs no chance TB can take the Cap hit

How is Mitts going to be "affordable" for the Avs moving forward? They don't have space to re-sign him. And you're correct that Manson is not waiving for Buffalo but maybe they aren't on the list come July 1 and ends up there anyhow.

Contending teams don’t move dmen particularly ones that help the PK during the season, and COL doesn’t need to overpay for a 2c because Colton has been just fine. COL declines this everyday.

This would have to be an offseason move(if Manson doesn't block it) and then Mitts wouldn't be of use or affordable. Maybe something around Manson and a 1st for Cozens

Still not sure how the Avs fit Cozens unless Landy doesn't come back and, even then, it's still going to be crazy tight even if they trade or buy out Joey.

I like Jokiharju, but I'll be concise and say EDM says no.

It will be toight but I think they can manage a 7m 2c(that fits the mold) if one of the 4m+ Dmen are moved out. Going to play with an acgm to see. I bet we would have to add a Foudy or something too
Edit: it turns out they can't

Yeah a late first and 30+ year old d is not getting you a 24 year old second line C with 7 years of team control.

Avs can't even afford it after further review, no worries

Does Julien Brisebois have a magic Salary Cap Fairy or something ? If he does I wish he'd used it to keep either Palat or Killorn.

Yep; I've run different scenarios and adding a high-priced "legit" 2C just will not work without moving out at least two high-ish priced roster players (and that's not even counting RyJo) who would then have to be replaced. They're going to have to either begin to make over the roster or deal with not having a 2C for a good long while, maybe the rest of the window. My solution is to bring in Ritchie next season and start getting him prepared to take over that spot. No 4th line duty; significant top 9 time with the best players. Give it at least two seasons to see if he can grow into that 2C role but start the process posthaste.

Don't see EDM moving a first for what would be our 7th Dman.

How much better is HJ over Ceci? Not much if at all, definitely not worth a 1st. Not of interest to Edmonton

I wouldn't put cozens on the block. It's funny, I see a lot more bait and switch with mittelstadt, even though mittelstadt is having a much better year, other teams change their target to cozens. I don't blame them for trying.

How do u think Cozens is any more affordable than Mitts would be???

That just makes NO SENSE at all

Also, ZERO CHANCE the Sabres ship out Cozens or Mitts with the main piece(s) coming back being Manson &/or a 1st

We aren’t looking for futures,
and Manson is too old to fit our timeline at this point

Imo, @Greysuits is wrong to think the Sabres would even consider a deal like that
Maybe if Manson was 27 & not 32, but…..

We aren’t trading EITHER of them
Mitts has been our best forward this year
My fellow Sabres fans need to start accepting that we are gonna sign Mitts to a long term deal- as long as he’ll accept a reasonable offer

I think he gets something like the 7x7 that Tage & Cozens got

A 1st for Jokiharju? No thanks from Edmonton. He’s not the right D for the Oilers to target with a 1st. Zero playoffs experience, minimal offensive ability, questionable defensive ability i assume.
