Sooo Kotkaniemi eh

Team: 2023-24 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 2, 2024
Published: Feb. 2, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Him leaving to Carolina messed up both Carolina and Mtl.
Carolina got a player and payed him way too much money up front.
Mtl went and traded away great picks for Dvorak...who would be lucky to play again in the nhl

LOL No thank you. That contract length is a non-starter.

Not to mention we literally have zero cap space.

Canes have no problem with KK lol. He's been very good, and his contract is a steal for what he does. His offense is incredibly streaky, but he'll still end up with about 50 points as a defensive stalwart.

Kotkaniemi broke Canes fans brains. They can't talk about him without making outlandish claims

It's only 5 years now, and he'd instantly be your 3C, he's a MAJOR upgrade on Eller, but your cap space problem would stop this happening. Not to mention, Carolina would want a LOT more

I mean the contract isn't as bad as others but the offense does need some improvement... maybe a long break will help

dude cmon...your enthusiasm is admirable but at some point we all have to accept things for what they are.
He'll never be a (constant) 50 pt player in the NHL.
His skating sucks. When I watched him with the Habs it was the one thing that always stuck out to me. I never understood how a fast team like Mtl drafted him so high...

All teams want more lol. I'm not sure you'd get a 2nd for him at this point. His production for what he makes? He's overpaid long-term; that's not good value. I'd be shocked if you got more than a 3rd + good prospect for him.

Also, he's not a MAJOR upgrade form Eller right now. Their production is nearly identical and Eller has been awesome on both sides of the ice. Eller has a much better 200ft game. Not to mention Eller makes half.

You're living in a dream world here my friend.

I love to call a guy a defensive stalwart with zero career selke votes and offensive sheltered minutes (while not producing offense)

This is typical CapFriendly crap post.

It's these kind of ideas that cost teams later.
Look at the Penguins since this is the team being traded too.
McCann was ice cold for them for a long time. He couldn't buy a goal. They eventually let him out to SEA.....where he exploded.
Now they look back at it and go, how dumb was that.
It's a real bad move to move a guy who has flashes of talent when they are having a bad spell. He's only 23 he'll bounce out of it. No need to let him go for nothing.
It's better to be patient and let him work through it.

He has not been very good and he is OK defensively. He's a very average player in ever way.

He is as MID as they come in every way. He's the Kasperi Kapanen of Centers.

Dude, McCann had 14G/32 points in 43 games his last season with the Pens. He got moved because Hextall is a raving idiot, nothing more, nothing less. Hextall mis-played his strategy thinking he'd lose McCann in the expansion draft and wanted to protect Jeff Carter instead.

His skating is a little sub-par but still NHL quality... his problem with the Canes this year is a couple of things
1. Inconsistent deployment and linemates. He's had a rotating cast of linemates all season and his line always seems haphazardly put together plus he's struggled to get ice time with Aho and Staal getting a lot of it due to Aho being the scoring line and Staal being the shutdown line.
2. Mental. KK seems like he's in his own head and he can't seem to get out... he seems to be overthinking every single decision on the ice

I think a 2C should be a target for the Canes but trading him without one in the wings isn't a great idea

dude McCann had stretches of 20+ games with no goals, was viewed widely as inconsistent and was just like KK sent down to the 4th line.
Please don't hand everyone revisionist history.

This is not revisionist history. McCann's last two seasons with the Pens were very solid. He was traded because of Hextall's playing the expansion draft poorly. Stop acting like you know what happened. You're clearly not someone who watched the Pens and it shows.

Kotkaniemi is more likely to have negative value as opposed to being worth a 2nd round pick.

No he's not lol. Eller and Kotkaniemi are basically the same player. Eller does a better job in his role for half the cap hit and isn't signed for 7 more years.

McCann played at a 27 goal/61 point pace in his last season with the Pens while also providing a very strong 2 way game. If Hextall wasn't the worst GM in franchise history, he'd still be with the Pens and probably playing very well
