Inject Some Youth Next Season

Created by: Julius_Freezer
Team: 2024-25 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 18, 2024
Published: Mar. 19, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Deals Explained:

Mikheyev to SJS: Simple Cap dump, shouldn't be too expensive since Mikheyev is a good player and if SJ retains some money on the last 2 years of his deal they could turn him into a 2nd round pick at the deadline.

Trading for Guentzel's Rights: Carolina bought him as a rental, he's not signing with them, VAN deals for his rights so they can give him an 8th year on his deal to lower the AAV

Kent Johnson and Adam Boqvist to VAN: Both players look like they could use a fresh start, Johnson gets to come home and can be a perfect long term fit on Pettersson's wing, Boqvist gets a chance to play in the Top 4 with a great shutdown dman in Soucy who can cover up his defensive flaws, two things the Canucks really need are a winger for Petey and another puck moving dman (preferably RD), they get both here which is why they pay a premium of a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 3 of their top 10 prospects.

We're not trading KJ unless a major roster need is met; depth of futures is neither necessary nor desired as a return.

    Columbus definitely declines

I can’t see us re-signing Lindholm, especially for 8 years

Cap dumps dont net you picks. SJ will take him but you'd need to add a 2nd not a 7th

Kent Johnson is not going to be moved this summer, if only because he'll be in the middle of a 6-9 month rehab process after labrum repair surgery. Teams do not trade players in that situation, and more importantly, teams do not acquire players in that situation.

The Canes absolutely can sign Guentzel. And with how well he has fit, they will sign him.

I feel like re-signing Guentzel is definitely doable. It would take some movement, but the Canes would be MUCH better off with him on the team, and I think they're gonna do what they can to keep him around.

I am so fascinated by what the Canes will do this summer. That list of UFA is astounding.

Yea it's gonna be a fun one. I think the only given imo is that Jarvis is sticking around and the rest, god knows what's gonna happen.

I think a 3rd would get it done tbh. But yeah, I'm not sure how you can call it a cap dump and have the Sharks giving up the better pick. That's pretty wild

On top of what everyone else has said, you're suggesting the Sharks could retain on him at the deadline. The Sharks don't have a retention slot until Burns' contract expires in July 2025 so they couldn't retain until then.

Regardless, as everyone else has said it will cost assets to dump him. Cap dumps don't net you assets.
