Chatfield and Ollivier in RobertsonKampfReaves out

Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 21, 2024
Published: Mar. 21, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This could work Chatfield is a young two way defender with size.
Ollivier is a way better tough guy then Reaves, actually a playable 4th liner.
I think this 1st line was incredible so stick with it and stack 2nd line with Marner to add his defence to Nylander and Tavares line.
Had to get rid of Robertson to make Kampf trade easier and get a pick in our weak pool.

Chatfield is really underrated and would be a great Leafs target if he's one of the Carolina cap casualties (which...tbd). No idea what that contract looks like, but that's exactly the player I'd target for Toronto.

I don't know if Chicago will give you a 3rd, but getting a depth prospect and fringe cap dump/4th liner for a team likely looking for NHL bodies next season isn't a bad idea IMO. The Kampf contract and Chicago's leverage might drop that 3rd significantly...

Columbus says no (in the offseason). Olivier is playing a valuable role now, so it's worth sacrificing the 3rd to keep him around to protect/mentor the kids. However, that could easily be a TDL deal, though there will probably be other teams interested that don't require us to take on Reaves to make it happen. They might win out even if it's a lesser return.

Take out the 3rd if you want a call back from Chicago. Kampf is a pure cap dump for a team full of bottom 6 players.

What doesn't work in all this is either of those trades. Kampf carries no value in a trade to Chicago. He's basically a cap dump from the Hawks perspective. I doubt Robertson is enough to entice the Hawks to take Kampf, but even if he is, the Leafs don't get that 3rd back. They get nothing and like it.

Reaves is the definition of a cap dump. Other than his ability to fight, he's washed as a player. That pick probably covers dumping the last 2 years of his deal, but the Jackets aren't giving up Olivier for free. Leafs definitely add to that deal if they want Olivier.

Any way you want to look at that CHI trade, CHI declines. Kampf is a cap dump.
-Take out Kampf and I still wouldn't pay a 3rd for Robertson.
-Take out the 3rd round pick, and Robertson isn't even close to enough to take on Kampf's contract.
What exactly do you believe Robertson is worth?
And, What exactly do you believe the price will be to move Kampf's contract?

If James Malatesta can make the team next year out of camp, I could maybe see it for CBJ. He projects as a similar B6 pest who can maybe pot 10+ goals. Frankly, we’d just be buying Reaves out.

$1.8M in actual cash for the buyout, minus the $1.1M in cash to Olivier, so it’s a question of if CBJ are willing to buy a 3rd for $700k.
