Every Teams worst signings in the Salary Cap era

Created by: Dillpickle
Team: 2023-24 Custom Team
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 21, 2024
Published: Apr. 21, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is a team of the worst contracts sign by each of the 32 NHL teams, (in case you are not aware the salary cap era began in the 2005-06 season).

Here's what determines a 'bad contract' the value that was signed to and the impact that the player had on the team

I will give the contract details, how long they were signed for, if the contract was bought out/traded and who made the signing so you can yell at that person that made such an awful signing

ANA Ryan Kesler (6.875x6) GM Bob Murray (Kesler had 2 good seasons with the Ducks before injuries took a toll on him. Became LTIR retired)
ARI Oliver Ekman-Larsson (8.25x8) GM John Chayka (Ekman-Larsson didn't put up the same numbers he did back in his prime, traded to VAN, later bought out)
BOS David Backes (6x5) GM Don Sweeney (Backes never put 40+ points as a Bruin. Traded to ANA)
BUF Ville Leino (4.5x6) GM Darcy Regier (Leino was signed as a young potential player for the Sabres but the most points he put up was 25. Bought out in 2013)
CGY Johnathan Huberdeau (10.5x8) GM Brad Treliving (still currently playing on his contract)
CAR Tomas Kaberle (4.25x3) GM Jim Rutherford (Kaberle played 29 games before being traded to MTL, later bought out)
CHI Marian Hossa (5.275x12) GM Dale Tallon (Age caught up to Hossa and a skin condition forced him to LTIR retire. Contract traded to ARI)
COL Erik Johnson (6x7) GM Joe Sakic (It was a good contract signed but injuries diminished the value significantly)
CBJ Nathan Horton (5.3x7) GM Jarmo Kekalainen (Horton played 2 seasons with CBJ before LTIR retiring. Contract traded to TOR)
DAL Sean Avery (3.875x4) GM Brett Hull (Avery was claimed off waivers by NYR)
DET Stephen Weiss (4.9x5) GM Ken Holland (Weiss had 2 injury-riddled seasons before being bought out in 2015)
EDM Milan Lucic (6x7) GM Peter Chiarelli (Lucic had 1 good season then fell off the face of the map and was traded to CGY)
FLA Dave Bolland (5.5x5) GM Dale Tallon (Bolland had 2 injury-riddled seasons with FLA before being LTIR retired. Contract traded to ARI)
LA Marian Gaborik (4.725x7) GM Dean Lombardi (Gaborik had 47 points in his 1st year then fell off the map. Traded to OTT before being LTIR retired)
MIN Jason Pominville (5.6x5) GM Chuck Fletcher (I thought about Parise and Suter here but they did good in Minnesota, Pominville had 1 50+ point season after signing an extension and traded back to BUF)
MTL Karl Alzner (4.625x5) GM Marc Bergevin (Alzner played all 82 games in his 1st year then played 13 in a span of 2 seasons. Bought out in 2020)
NSH Kyle Turris (6x6) GM David Poile (Turris had terrible numbers in NSH. Bought out in 2020)
NJ Ilya Kovalchuk (6.6x15) GM Lou Lamoreillo (Kovalchuk had 3 great seasons in NJ before leaving for the KHL. It's bad because he signed for 15 years then played for a 5th of the contract)
NYI Rick DiPietro (4.5x15) GM Garth Snow (Injuries killed this contract. Bought out in 2013)
NYR Wade Redden (6x6) GM Glen Sather (Redden played 2 years on the Rangers before being buried and bought out in 2012)
OTT Colin White (4.75x6) GM Pierre Dorian (After coming off a career year White did nothing after that. Bought out in 2022
PHI Ilya Bryzgalov (5.6x9) GM Paul Holmgren (Bryzgalov did not do as advertised after coming off a .921 S% season with the Yotes. Bought out in 2013)
PIT Jack Johnson (3.25x5) GM Jim Rutherford (Jack Johnson played his worst hockey on PIT. Bought out in 2020)
SJ Marc-Edouard Vlasic (7x8) GM Doug Wilson (Vlasic's age had caught up to him and he's still currently playing on his contract)
SEA Chris Driedger (3.5x3) GM Ron Francis (This franchise is still young but this contract has been the worst so far)
STL Jori Lethera (4.7x3) GM Doug Armstrong (Lethera was overpaid as a middle 6 forward and traded to PHI)
TB Mattias Ohlund (3.6x7) GM Brian Lawton (Ohlund played 2 seasons with Tampa and never played again)
TOR David Clarkson (5.25x7) GM Dave Nonis (Clarkson did nothing in his time with the Leafs. Traded to CBJ before LTIR retiring)
VAN Loui Eriksson (6x6) GM Jim Benning (Eriksson was signed to play with the Sedin twins but never eclipsed 30 points with VAN. Traded to ARI)
VGK Robin Lehner (5x5) GM Kelly Mcrimmon (Lehner was supposed to be the replacement for Fleury but never met expectations now he LTIR retired)
WSH Brooks Laich (4.5x6) GM George Mcphee (Laich had 1 40+ point season then fell off the map and traded to TOR)
WPG Bryan Little (5.2x6) GM Kevin Cheveldayoff (Little played one season with his new contract then got injured and forced to LTIR retire. The contract was traded to ARI

There is 1 per team if there was anybody worse for a specific team, name them

I'd give Hossa that exact contract again next season just as a thank you for the 3 cups.

Bobby Ryan's deal was worse for Ottawa

Edit: also the Hossa deal was fantastic. Tremendous two way player, signed for well below what he should have been making, and it was never a true problem for them.

If you see Whites stats compared to Bobby Ryan then you'll see why I picked him

Hossa was similar to Erik Johnson contract wise for value

Matthew Carle isn't a bad pick, but Ryan Malone would've been my second option

That was the only thing keeping him off the list

KK's current contract was a re-signing not from that offer sheet and a bad one-year contract doesn't qualify as the worst in like 20 years

Yeah, the deal stunk. White really never recaptured the momentum he had. But in terms of the actual impact, Bobby's deal was worse. White got bought out and it's basically a non issue, in fact Ottawa even gets a cap credit for it next year. Bobby's deal was brutal for them at a time where it actually effected their ability to ice a competitive team with their internal budget.

Alex Semin was a lot worse for the Canes imo, especially considering the buyout that came with it.

Jets worse move was flipping picks with Vegas to protect enstrom, extra show of loyalty on little and wheeler, probably kept them scheifele and helly and not rebuilding right now.
