Moving back twice

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2024-25 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 24, 2024
Published: Apr. 24, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lots going on here.

Notes on three-way trade

STL gives: Buchnevich (50%), #16 pick
STL gets: #13 pick, #25 pick

NJD gives: #13 pick, $1.45m cap space
NJD gets: #16 pick, Colton

COL gives: Colton, #25 pick
COL gets: Buchnevich at $1.45m

According to Puckpedia (puckpedia.com/pickvalue), difference between #13 and #16 is equal to #53 pick. So for STL it is like selling Buch at 50% for 1st and 2nd. And $1.45m in cap relief is worth a late 2nd, early 3rd. So for NJD, it’s like buying Colton with 2nd+3rd value.

Very very interesting. That looks like a powerhouse team. I will also be stealing this trade idea on Buch haha.

Can't see the Avs swapping Colton for Buch; doesn't make sense at all.

Pardon my French, but fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu** that. Under no circumstance are we handing Buch to the Avs. Never happening. The value is awful anyway.

So, if I understand it correctly, the Blues move 16th overall + Buchnevich (AND retain 50% on his contract) and in return will get a 1st just 3 spots higher and a late first?

Ehm... and why exactly would the Blues do this?

Interesting. If there is somebody the Wild really like at #10 and one that likely won't be available at #13, they might actually do this. Good offer!

Why would COL do that? Either Landy is back zero need for Buch, or he isn’t and they just re-sign Drouin keep their pick and decide on something decidedly less expensive that doesn’t create a hole at the 3C spot and loses them a draft pick. Easy no. And what kind of bath salt smoking math does STL, trade Buch and retain on him and get a 3 spot pick swap and a late first to have him land on a divisional rival?

I don’t really see why the blues do this

So they trade Buch (50%) and 16th overall for 13th overall and a late first?
Maybe if the retention was dropped and Ross Colton goes to Stl as well I could see it, but right now I don’t get it

This is a bad trade for the blues. Buch is worth more than a late first and only moving up 3 spots in the draft and we have to retain 50%
