Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Casey, Seamus [Reserve List]
  2. Mercer, Dawson [RFA Rights]
  3. 2025 1st round pick (NJD)
  4. 2025 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Top 10 protected, pick will transfer to 2026 1st if the pick is a top 10 pick

Casey is yet to sign in NJ despite his season being over and the Devils have a deep RHD pool. Wonder if it's worth it to sell high on him.

Marner replaces Mercer, that's a huge upgrade for NJ and a swap you make 10 times out of 10.
NJD
  1. Järnkrok, Calle
  2. Marner, Mitchell ($1,903,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Marner and his camp indicate a desire to re-sign in New Jersey, but deal doesn't come with an extension due to it occurring prior to July 1st. Will likely be an incremental raise over what he's making now
2.
TOR
  1. Perfetti, Cole [RFA Rights]
WPG
  1. Liljegren, Timothy [RFA Rights]
  2. Robertson, Nicholas [RFA Rights]
  3. 2026 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Jets re-sign Monahan, and still have Lowry and Schief under contract for the foreseeable future. Jets instead leverage Perfetti's value to add a young scoring winger, a legit top 4 defender, and a pick. Robertson + Lili will probably cost roughly the same as if not less than Perfetti

Marner would be the best player on your team. He is a top playmaker in the league, a consistent 30 goal scorer, a Selke finalist, and is a winner regardless of how Toronto media paints him. He is far from the issue in TO. The fact people like you view him as this sort of asset to avoid is crazy.

I like the Jets trade. Perfetti might be mad that he isn't getting ice time in the playoffs when he is better then half the players that are.

New Jersey declines. That’s a nice sell job you did there but NJ has to decline. Forward is the position of least need for the devils. This trade also leaves them in a complete salary bind for the foreseeable future. There is no room to upgrade their goaltending with Marner’s $9M cap hit and then his extension. Marner’s cap hit is way too high to make this trade worthwhile. I also have a hang up parting with a first round pick for one year of Mitch Marner if I can make an offer to him as an unrestricted free agent. If Toronto wants to unload Mitch Marner to New Jersey (or anywhere) it’ll be for pennies on the dollar.

The Devils have this kind of player in Nico Hischier. Just because he doesn’t get the same media attention as the Leafs do, doesn’t mean he isn’t talented. The reason we view him as a distressed asset is the absolute flood of armchair GM threads that run Mitch Marner out of town. The devils should not pay a premium for Mitch Marner. This trade is a premium price (their best prospect, a promising young forward and a first round pick) for one year of Mitch Marner.

Pretty easy no from Winnipeg. There's nothing there worth downgrading Perfetti for.

Please just extend Marner yourself for 8x13. Love to see that roster remain so top heavy. Devils will be better off with a deeper roster moving forward. This isn't about Marner being bad, it is about bad assets management and cap hell as the Devils will need to pay Luke and Nemec soon too.

Definitely a fair critique. If Markstrom is still a go, then there is your goaltending crisis solved at 3m. Salary bind is a bit of a stretch, you have no pending UFAs of note and all of your RFAs expire when the cap ceiling will have raised considerably. Marner's extension would only be ~3m more than what he'd be costing you in 2024.

Again, it's not one year of Mitch Marner, it'd be 9 in this case. Can't make anything official because of the July 1st deadline, but there are always handshake agreements. This entire trade hinges on Marner sticking around. NJD wouldn't be the only team with interest, you're not getting a player like Marner for "pennies on the dollar", regardless of UFA status or NMCs.

Casey is returning to Michigan for another year. This is not a concern for NJD. Devils development staff (Eric Weinrich) meets with him weekly in person. He plays in Big Ten, which is closest to pro-style game of all the conferences. Michigan does well at developing prospects (Quinn Hughes, Luke Highes, Zach Werenski, Kyle Connor, Pacioretty, Hyman, Larkin, etc). And the facilities blow Utica's out of the water. Plus, they will have good chance of competing with McGroarty, TJ Hughes returning....William Whitelaw, Tim Lovell transferring in and Freshmen Matvei Gridin, Michael Hage, Christian Humphreys. Its will be good for his development.

4-8 years of Mercer vs 1 year of Marner is an easy choice for NJD.

We are not building a one-and-done team...our window is not closing, it is just opening.

He would not be. Jack Hughes would still be the best player on our team. Nico Hischier is not bad either. But its not a question of whether he is good or not. Marner has one year at $10.9m and a history of making contract negotiations very difficult.

The devils will owe Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec big money extensions in the next two seasons. They do not have any room to fit another big money forward on their roster and hope to give contracts to Hughes, Nemec and a goaltender to be determined (this is probably at least $20M per season between these three players). If anything, Marner would have to take a pay cut to be on New Jersey. Just because Toronto deemed it prudent to pay 4 players over $10M per season, doesn’t mean the rest of the league has to do the same.

As far as pennies on the dollar, I’m not sure what you can expect. Between his pending UFA status, no movement clause and currently inflated salary, that’s the best that can be offered. The leafs can shop Marner around, I think you’ll be disappointed by the offers you get. Every single team can just make him an offer as a free agent.

He is a great player.. nobody is saying he isn't. He just doesn't fit NJ's team at 11+ million, if he wanted to take a discount and take 9 then yeah I'm sure NJ would be interested in him but the devils already have Hughes, Bratt, Meier, Hischier as top of the league players up front and all make a lot of money already. The future just doesn't work if they bury that much into another forward. 9 might work with serious wiggling but they've also got big raises for Luke Hughes and Nemec coming soon. A top heavy forward core doesn't work, you need depth and the team right now is built for that with the great contracts on the books. They're just missing a goaltender and a 2nd/3rd line guy who can forecheck and hit along with maybe 65 points.. another year of growth for some of the younger guys won't hurt either

He's not better than Jack Hughes and it has more to do with the fact that he's going to demand being paid as a top 5 player while being a no show in the playoffs every year

Mitch Marner and his NMC decide where he goes. He is a rental.

You can pony up the massive contract he'll want yourself, keep him as your own rental and let him walk for free, or let him pick his destination and sell him for pennies on the dollar.

It will almost certainly just end up being option A
