I believe Toronto will have to give you assets to take on Tavares.

If Chicago is adding $11m in cap, Toronto is throwing at least a 1st their way. Chicago isn't paying to help Toronto. Doesn't matter anyway because Tavares isn't waiving for Chicago.

Suter has a full NMC. He's not going anywhere. I do think something can be done with the DAL 1st with Faksa and the hawks sending one of their 2nds back. Keeping the same number of picks for DAL in the 2024 draft, but also shedding the dead weight.

Targets to potentially acquire as cap dumps:

- Reilly Smith
- John Tavares (probably doesn't waive?)
- JG Pageau
- Kuzmenko / Mikyehev in VAN
- Robby Fabbri
- Jeff Skinner
- Anders Lee

Note I'm not claiming none of these guys can still play, only that their current teams are motivated to move them primarily for cap reasons. Given that some players in CHI voiced concerns about guys being short-term focused because they know they won't be around for long, the FO might be more cautious about taking on cap dumps. But the fact remains CHI has plenty of cap and can use that to get more assets if they choose.

I think there's a definite future where Toronto is able to move Tavares (unlikely probably but they can put pressure on him to waive) and I do see a path for guys like Smith and Skinner to come in a trade and then be bought out/traded at deadline to a playoff contender, ala Domi in 2023.

you are high as a kite if you think the penguins would pay you to take Smith.
That is never happening.
Smith will return a lower round pick, 3rd or 4th, un retained. Be it, at draft, after draft or TDL.

You guys are probably right. But I still think there is a chance CHI would take Tavares for FC's as long as it is after his bonus is paid.

This is just absurd nonsense , no way JT waives to join the 2nd worst team in the league & no way Leafs need to add a 1st to move him. Pure 🗑️ 😂

Yeah some of these aren't even cap dumps and true to form CapFriendly severely over valuing the cost of a cap dump.

I have a hard time believing Smith is a cap dump. The Pens got him for cheap because the Golden Knights needed to clear cap space. Even with a poor year, Smith has more value than that. With only a year left on his contract and being pretty recently removed from being a pretty impactful member of Vegas's cup team, there will definitely be GMs willing to bet on him having a better season than he did this year. Heck, Chicago could easily get him for a 4th rounder, put him next to Bedard to boost his scoring, and sell him with retention at the deadline for more valuable assets than they'd have to pay for him.

Penguins will not do that deal. They won't have to give up picks to get rid of Smith.

Sure there's a chance. Tavares is still decent, his actual salary is minimal, and his cap hit is just eating up space Chicago likely wasn't using anyway, but clearing that cap holds a lot of value to Toronto. Its irresponsible GMing to not try to grab sweeteners in return for doing Toronto a huge favor.

Sure. But the sweeteners could come on the backend, if Tavares is willing to waive again at the trade deadline. If he is, there is a very good chance CHI could make out like bandits. But yeah, regardless of actual salary, you don't just take on an $11M cap hit for nothing. I doubt he waives, so this is probably a futile exercise anyway.
