He's on pace to put up 43 pts per 82 games this year and the Hawks could eat half his salary and dump him for picks at the trade deadline. Plus, he is a vet that will add leadership to a young team and is only on a 1 year contract. I am fine if you balance out his worth with some pick swaps.

I feel like someone is going to offer sheet Alex Lafreniere. The fact you can probably get him for like $5MM/year and a few picks has to be pretty enticing to a bunch of teams that have cap to work with

They have zero time for dead cap space, yet you are talking about buying our Mrazek (which equates to $4.7MM in dead cap paid out over the next 4 years)?
Also, how is this not Jarry's best day? He was an All-Star the last 2 years.

- Mrázek is going to cost the Leafs at least a 2nd to dump (NTC & $3.8MM for 2 years)
- Jarry at $1.75MM for a year is worth a late first
- Carter at $1.6MM for 2 years is worth a mid-2nd

The window to be competitive is still there - they win the series with better goaltending and some injury luck.
Rebuild on the fly can be done - Guentzel (3rd round), Marino (6th round)...</div></div>
There is no way we still have an open window if we lose Letang and 1 of Rust or Malkin (actually no clue what we do at the #2 C spot if we lost Malkin) - I just don't see it. Our division is too good. Also, Crosby could go play elsewhere for 3 years while we rebuild and come back to the Penguins.
Finally Jake & Marino took 3-4 years to develop. There is no way our window is still open then.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dopplsan</b></div><div>I think PIT might have to sweeten the deal for Zucker more. POJ may be one of PIT’s top prospects, but all told, he’s OK.
Id take this package, add a 2nd to CBJ, and instead of picks, we’ll send you Gabriel Carlsson. He’s essentially POJ, but a few years older - a fine 3rd pair guy, about to be an RFA.
We can buy Zucker out, or retain and flip him somewhere else.</div></div>
You could retain $2ish million and probably get a late 3rd or 4th for him. Pittsburgh really doesn't need another LD considering we have 3 signed longer term at >$4m. He's a good mid-6 winger and a great locker room personality. He just hasn't worked with Malkin at all.

healthy penguins team after deadline
Why are we giving up a ton to get a rental $3.5m backup goalie and a new #3 center when we have one of the best goalies in the league starting? This team has won 15 of last 17. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Yes we need a backup goalie, but that should be solved by trading a 4th.

The Penguins desperately need the cap space unless Malkin is willing to take a discount down to like $5m/year.

3.) if the pens are retaining on Zucker, they would definitely expect back better than a 6th. Otherwise they won’t trade him.</div></div>
1) you trade MP because that stupid Math contract is untradeable (I guess you could also trade Dumo) and you need that $4-5m in cap space or else you probably losing 2 of ERod, Heinen, ZAR, or Carter. This is part of the JR legacy where we don't have any decent prospects to call up at min cap hits, except POJ.
2) perhaps we can get a 2nd for him from someone without any salary coming back but I don't see a ton of fit anywhere
3) Zucker is averaging 0.4 points a game over the last 2 seasons, playing top 6 min, and has been hurt a ton. Even at $3.5m ($2m retained) he is a complete cap dump.

I feel like the Penguins would just trade McCann on draft day vs exposing him to Seattle. A 24 year old, middle 6 center, that has averaged 0.6 pts/game over his last 2 seasons has a lot of/late 1st value (he might be better than any center to hit the FA market this summer).
