Cap Navigation for Healthy Roster
Unfortunately with our cap situation we don't really have a choice at this point. Cap space is crucial once Hyman is healthy and him or someone with significant cap will have to move. The only other option is to simply take a higher pick with no player in return like a 2nd.

Yea, I don't see his value either, well at least the never ending fanatical value.</div></div>
The value here was his experience playing with Reilly last year in the World Championships. The pairing brought the best out of the each and would fix that spot on the Leafs current roster. Shifting Hainsey to where he should be on one of the bottom 2 pairings instead of being stretched to a top 2D. He also figures to fit in the cap as he wont take much to resign. Were not getting a number 1 and fitting them without getting rid of one of either Nylander or Marner.

Does someone like Borgman on the other side make more sense? The Leafs probably also retain some salary in the martin deal. (500k-1 mill).

Do you know what a B level prospect is? Timashov is only 21 with a 0.5 ppg total in the A. You know what players who post 1.0 PPG seasons in the AHL are? NHL ready players. As for Carrick he can easily be a top 6 RHD, who can put up 15-20 points a year on many teams if given the chance. If Babcock didn't have such a thing for Polak he'd be having a great year. Hjalmersson on the other hand is an upgrade over Carrick and Polak for sure but cost 4x as much and is much older. Carrick Offensively is better but Hjalmersson even on his opposite side is a much better defensive upgrade and exactly what the leafs need, to go along with his playoff/cup winning experience. This saves Arizona money and could be a great fit for the leafs who could take the entire cost of Hjalmersson off their hands.

McDonaugh for a young top 9 winger, a young top 6D, a 1st next year and a 2nd in this years draft which is very deep and should be considered around a late 1st in most drafts, plus a 3rd. That's fair value.
NYR gets younger and a tonne of quality picks for one aging player
NSH gets a top 6 winger for very for a deep playoff run
TOR gets a Top 4 RHD under control for the next two years before the Matthews/Marner contracts kick in.
This is really well done trade.

Deadline Moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TMLSage</b></div><div>ZachaAmel
Your trade for Gudbrunson is a terrible trade for the Leafs as it actually weakens the team to pick him up. Carrick by himself is a way superior right handed defenceman to Gudbrunson and to give up a 2nd round pick in a deep draft with Mark Hunter making the picks is insane. His skating is way too slow for today's NHL and is really a 7th defenceman if one is being totally objective and the Canucks are going to have to give him away at the trade deadline to find a taker for his ove-inflated salary demands.</div></div>
Yeah I don't see the point of Gudbranson coming if Carrick goes back. Something like a Marlies LHD like Neilsen, Soshnikov, and Polak should get this done and maybe a late pick. He should be treated like an upgrade over Polak and that's it. Id also take an even lower pick to get rid of Martin.

Deadline
The Leafs deal isn't bad, but its definitely an over payment by the Leafs. Leivo or Soshnikov and the 2nd for Gudrbanson and the third makes sense. Regarding Tanev, Liljegren and one of those two forwards make sense. That's a value of a mid first rounder and a 2nd. Which means that other first rounder thrown in is the over payment. So for Tanev you either get Liljegren or the 1st rounder plus one of either Soshnikov/Leivo. I think both teams make that move as it helps each others plan. As a Leafs guy this is what I would do.
Leafs receive: Tanev
Canucks receive: Soshnikov, Carrick, and 2018 1st round round pick
Leafs are one RHD away and this should take care of our of there top 4 long term. Just need to figure out down the middle.

Grabner and Cammalleri Trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>danzhock10</b></div><div>As a Ranger fan, I would take the Grabner deal. In the upcoming drafts, the depth from first to third rounds is remarkable. Plenty of solid players within reach throughout.
Your Cammalleri deal would be better served, by trading for either Derek Ryan or Josh Jooris in Carolina. For one thing, won't cost more than a late round draft pick; for another, are considerably less expensive than Camm. Both have been playing center, and are excellent on faceoffs 5-on-5 and on the PK.
Great guess with Grabner, though. And, Leivo is the kind of fourth-line forward the Rangers are missing. Gritty, big and wants the ice-time.</div></div>
I would do both of these trades except id only be willing to do Leivo and our extra second this year. That should get a deal done. I also agree with danzhock10 in regards to getting Derek Ryan instead. I actually wouldn't be surprised if he cost more then cam but we could easily the third that already in the trade and possibly Soshnikov but id suspect a depth pick coming back to the Leafs as well.

I think you guys would be lucky to get Zacha for Patches straight up. He's a young potential top 6 centre already playing in the league. Maybe a 2nd and spare parts going back to Montreal but that's it. The Schlemko deal should probably be a 3rd instead of a 4th. Plekanec for a second and a 4th makes sense, so not far off.

JVR wont be traded but if he was it would be for at least a first plus. Guy is a consistent 25-30 goal scorer, 60 points every year. However unless something radical changes. leafs keep him for run and try to keep him this summer. Bozak I could easily see going to Pittsburgh Ian Cole ande a pick. I think a 2nd is pretty good in terms of value.Poak will get you a 5th at most, and Komorov don't be surprised if he only nets you a 4th or rides off into the summer UFA style.

Yeah the Brouwer deal makes no sense since you can just simply buyout Bouwmeester and save 3.6 millions next year and only have a cap hit of 1.8 mill over the next two seasons. Much better then keeping that Browuer deal. Also believe the Leafs may take his services off your hands but he'd have to waive, but I believe a Bouwmeester/Parayko trade could be done for Gardiner/Marner Deal. Blues rid themselves of a bad contract and get a top 6 forward with loads of potential. Leafs get young big RHD top 4 D they covet and experience on the Blueline for a cup run the next two years but can handle the cap before the Matthews contract comes up.

Just a thought in terms of Centers. Would you do Bozak and a pick for Ian Cole and Sheahan to reunite best buddies in Bozak and Kessel? I'm thinking in terms of lineup make up for the pens. That gives you three lines that can be dangerous at any point for relatively little damage to prospects or important roster players.

Honestly not that far off but we need center depth so the GOAT isn't going anywhere. Something like Kapanen, Rosen and a 2nd will probably get it done. Calgary would probably make that trade for Komorov as well. However don't think the lineup works. I wouldn't expect for Nylander to go Center until next year at the earliest if ever. We have Bozak and Kadri still who should chew up a lot of minutes.

3-Team Deal with Minnesota/Arizona
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>krakowitz</b></div><div>That is a horrible deal for the Leafs. Marner is worth more than that whole package, and then throwing Gardiner on top is a massive loss for Toronto.</div></div>
Dumba alone is close to worth Marner. Hes a potential Top 2 RHD who has more goals then Marner from the back end already this season and is only a few years older. We could not afford Gardiner with Dumba's next extension along with the big boys, so he nets us Centre depth in a former first rounder in Kunin. This eliminates two weaknesses (RHD, and C) by trading from our strengths (LHD and RW) and allows for a clearer cap picture moving forward while creating space for more youth to move up such as Kapenen/Dermott. I believe Arizona gets the best player, but I think the Leafs get better now and long-term as a team. Have to give something to of worth to get what you want.

The Next-Step Trade - Draft 2018
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Stored in the minors? Still costs against cap. Salary minus 1m. Trade edited to take away from potential issue with Ennis. Also addresses depth at the center position in a cost effective way instead of signing Bozak. I've done the math even with my resigning numbers we are under the probable 80 mill cap ceiling for next year let alone what it grows to the following year. That is with the large Matthews contract as well numbers are as follows
Matthews - 12 mil
Nylander - 7 mil
Marleau 6.25 mil
Dumba - 6 mil
JVR - 6 mil
Kadri - 5 mil
Reilly 5 mil
Anderson - 5 mil
Zaitsev - 4.5 mil
Hainsey - 3 mil
Martin - 2.5 mil
Sheahan 2.5 mil
Kapanen - 2.5 mil (2019/20 bridge deal if he establishes top 9 role)
Hyman - 2.25 mil
Brown - 2.1 mil
Carrick - 2.0 mil
Borgman - 2.0 mil (2019/20)
Gauthier 1.5 mil
Leivo 1.5 mil (2019/20)
Back-Up of Choice - 1.0 mil
Dermott - 0.9 mil
Kunin - 0.9 mil
any depth player 0.9 mil
Ends up with a cap hit around 76-77 million bonuses not included and with Martin still in the line-up which we should be able to get rid of and the ability to get use Horton on the LTIR.
It can work.

This wont happen from both sides. For the Leafs Kadri isn't moving and is a huge steal even if he is in a slump right now. Babs likes him and we don't have strong centre depth. For the Oilers, Nurse is coming into his own and they are in need of strong D and im not sure if Gardiner or Carrick fit the bill, and Nuge while being slightly over priced is a great second line centre that allows flexibility for Draisitil to go from wing to centre depending on matchups.

The Next-Step Trade - Draft 2018

And those resigning of JVR, Bozak and others don't work in cap. league.</div></div>
Dumba is 23 year old right handed defenseman with about the same potential as Marner in his own position. A right hand shot D is also a big need for this club, especially one of his calibre. Marner is expendable for cap reasons that you brought up and the Leafs stock more draft picks in the cupboard for a deep draft class this year. If you also look at the math, and all the cap we can get rid of those contracts work. Komorov, Polak, Marincin, and Fehr gone this year as well as Gardiners 4 million through the trade. That frees up the extensions this offseason, and yes we would be tight when Matthews extension kicks in, but it can be done. Do the Math and the look of Balance of this team compared to current. The loss of Marner would be hard to swallow especially cause he's a Toronto boy but wee have plenty of skill upfront. In terms of Ennis, he could stay as a 3rd line player that would replace Marner short term, or stored in the minors just in time for his contract to expire, and eliminate the need of the buyout.
