I should have known better. Trading leaf players away has probably been covered from every angle to the point of harassment haha

8 player deal Chychrun to LA - probably terrible
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hii</b></div><div>Except you neglet the fact that Ottawa doesn't need to do any of these moves and to loss a top four defesemen for giving up a player is absurd. Brannstromm has become a staple in the top four and has looked amazing. Gustavsson is worth far more than a third to Ottawa cause he is the goalie of the future still and Formenton is usefull as well and there is not a need for Roy. The problem with this is that Ottawa has does not need to be in this deal and shouldn't make this deal cause they instantly loss several good pieces and gain nothing of value back for them.</div></div>
This is a very biased sounding response.
Brannstrom is far from a top 4 staple and in fact might be struggling to get into a game the second Sanderson steps into one. As much as I'd like to see them play him I'm not convinced the outlook is good at this point.
Gustavsson has been extremely average and unless the team unloads Murray somehow, he's leaving anyway. Goalies don't traditionally get great returns unless they are rockstars.
Formenton is quite useful and a great guy to have but Ottawa needs a top 4RD pretty badly. Roy would help there a ton. He does not add "nothing of value".
You have to give to get. These moves solve problems, not create them.

Thanks for feedback. Seems like overvaluing Kupari is the biggest problem here. Was surprised anyone has Ottawa issues though... Zaitsev replaced with a solid defenceman would have such a massive impact on them.
I had it like this:
ARI:
Chychrun + 4th = Kupari + 1st + 2nd
Brannstrom is the gift for taking Zaitsev
LA:
Roy = Formenton
Kupari + 1st + Vilardi = Chychrun
3rd = Gustavsson
OTT:
Formenton = Roy
Brannstrom is the price for ditching Zaitsev
Gustavsson + 2nd = Vilardi + 3rd + 4th

Was referring to the Vilardi for Brannstrom trade. Agree with you on strome.

Couple senators moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Claesson4Norris</b></div><div>Branny is a lefty, and Ottawa doesn't see him as a right side guy. Dorion mentioned on a podcast that they feel he dead ends himself when moving the puck on his off side. He's also currently boxed out of the NHL as they have 7 NHL Dmen, and Sanderson is coming at the end of the year.
Ottawa doesn't really have that much long term at C. They Have Norris as their top guy, Pinto who is probably a 2/3, White who is potentially moving to the wing (Pinto is more suitable as a C, and Ottawa is adding a C this summer). Paul is primarily a winger, but I think he can be a great 4C, and Tierney will be gone by the deadline. As for Prospects, they don't really have anyone close to the NHL besides Pinto.
If Ottawa is shopping Brannstrom, getting a young player with upside would be preferable to trading him for an NHLer without as much offensive talent like Ryan or Dylan Strome. Vilardi might never reach his full potential, but he's already a solid NHL player, and he has the upside to be the most skilled C Ottawa has imo.</div></div>
I think this trade has the potential to be a win for both teams in a big way. Unless one of them totally falls out, the upside and fit is there both ways.

That's fair. I'm not a Zaitsev fan though he has been decent. I'd like to see that contract go so the young guys can move up next year (JBD specifically). I figured on a one year deal Subban might see some resurgence to his game in another city. Risky, but not overly risky. Salary is low too.
I wouldn't give up more for him so it's a dead thought.

Retention list by team
Maybe I'm just missing it amongst all the great info on this site, but is there a list of how much dollars are tied up by team that shows years going forward? I can see it at the team > player lever but was thinking at the team level as a comparison.

Agreed. Ottawa wouldn't do this. They just spent a long time stockpiling youth and it'd be pretty foolish for them to move it out now. Call back in a few years. 🙂

I agree. If I had to choose between the two packages, I choose the one with the potential 1C/2C. Not a slight on the other players in the deal.

Stone for a couple middle roster players and a couple very low picks?
Schroeder? Dubinsky? Colborne? Garrison? Actually acquiring these guys on purpose?
Gaborik in the top 6??

Pittsburgh would be upset over getting Mark freakin Stone for a couple middle 6 guys and a 2nd round pick?

As budget sensitive as we all know Ottawa to be, I feel like if they did this they would just do Phaneuf for Gaborik and then buy him out, wouldn't they? Or is there some over 35 rule I don't know about with buyouts...

I don't think it's enough. Ottawa would literally have to be better after the trade in order to do it. This deal doesn't do that. Plus all three of these guys are under 6 feet. Talented yes, but small. Pass.

This is Karlsson. Probably the best defenceman since Orr. Not Kessel... the best winger since, well, never.

Not interested as a sens fan. It is tough, but possible, to get a PPG centre via trade but it's not going to be possible to get the best defenceman in the world in a trade. The offer would have to make Ottawa better than they are with Karlsson for it to happen. Drai and a 1st doesn't do that.

Ottawa being strong-armed by Karlsson - WEBER BLOCKBUSTER
Two things.
1) if all it took was 9.5M, Ottawa would just sign him. They'll probably end up signing him up to 12M or 13M in the end.
2) Weber is not a cheap contract. That's a 7.8M cap hit until like 2025 or something.

Not sure what you were going for here but I think the team gets worse after all this. Definitely worse off at centre. Galchenyuk as 1C... no thanks. And Spezza? I loved the guy in his time in Ottawa but it's over and we shouldn't go back.
