It's a fine deal. Jokers really rounded out his defensive game and he's not exactly undersized, I think he'd do alright with us.
We've got an internal replacement for Comtois much as I'd like to hang onto him, we don't enough RHD ready to make the jump.

Why not, though? BUF has all the LHD a team could hope for, but essentially just one RHD in the system that looks like they are part of the future and he is still probably a few years away from the NHL. Grab a couple solid veteran defensive RHD's to pair up with your young high octane LHD's, and that might be EXACTLY what BUF needs to take them to the next level.

Second, when I saw that we only got a first and a former 7th roung pick for Sam, I nearly fainted.
Then when I was able to research Devon, I was more than satisfied.
Karmanos, Ventura and Crowe certainly had a lot to do with all of the deals (Sam, Rasmus and Jack).
EDIT: Let me add, thanks for reminding me that Jordan was actually part of the Jack trade.
I was not thrilled with giving up a second for Greenway, but maybe it will turn out exceptionally well.

I have no issue with him playing in Europe in general, but Savoie might. End of the day, you're asking a U-21 to go to a foreign continent and live there for a while. That doesn't always work out the way ppl think it might.

Your opinion is just that, an opinion. And for what its worth alot of those "lance and chads" think savoie is nhl bound next season so the argument doesnt make sense. The rankings are all subjective, maybe we can all agree that top 8 all have a chance to be in the NHL within a couple of years.
We may see Johnson play a handful of games this year.
18 yo Kulich could make the jump next year as he is doing very well in Rochester with 16 goals and 34 pts in 44 games.
Over his last 15 games he has 9 goals and 17 pts.
Savoie 18 yo has 80 pts in 54 Junior games.
Of the top 8 prospects only Nadeau (204 lb) weighs more than 175 lb. while 13 of the current Sabres weigh over 195 lbs.
Over the next couple of years Buffalo may be moving on from Mittelstadt, Olofsson, Girgensons, Okposo, Hinostroza, Comrie, Anderson, Lyubushkin and maybe even Skinner.

Gee, aren't the Sabres better off long term having two first rounders a second rounder, and 4.6m in cap rather then 2.5 years of Chychrun? Sabres may/may not makes the playoffs this year, but certainly they wouldn't be beating Bruins in the first round anyway.

No chance Buffalo trades all their high picks in such a loaded draft. IMO we are better off addressing our defense than trying to bring in more forwards to our group. Peterka and Quinn can help bolster the offense with the increased ice-time they should see with Tuch's injury and Hino is a great fit alongside Cozens. I'm not worried about the goal scoring, but I am worried about how to keep the puck out of our net</div></div>
That's why I have been of the opinion for Buffalo to just get a veteran depth dman. Show the team you believe in them but really all you're giving up is like a 3rs for a guy to play 3rd pairing. Best route for them to go

Nah, that’s really not enough to move Peeke and Jenner, there’s high skill players but that’s not what Columbus is missing, they need more defensive defenseman like Peeke and losing their heart and soul player in Jenner would hurt them more then they are getting back.
Also one of the major issues with Columbus had been the lack of veteran leadership, moving their captain would I lessen the limited leadership group they already have.

Buffalo Sabres signed Dylan Cozens (7 Years / $7,100,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Upper_Body_Injury</b></div><div>Oh I get it there is definitely bias on this site. And to be fair I don't know a whole lot about Cozens I just find it funny how many people ripped the Boldy deal compared to this one. IMO both are good young players and will probably out preform these contracts. But I would argue that while Cozens is playing with two rookies Boldy isn't exactly playing with McDavid either last year he had Fiala for half a year, and while his +/- isn't great this year he is still better then Cozens then over his 96 games played with a higher PPG then Cozens for their respective careers so far..
From the Athletic:
<img class="for_img" src="https://cdn.theathletic.com/app/uploads/2023/01/29204514/Screenshot-2023-01-29-at-8.33.06-PM.png" alt="Screenshot-2023-01-29-at-8.33.06-PM.png"> <img class="for_img" src="https://cdn.theathletic.com/app/uploads/2023/01/29201019/Screenshot-2023-01-29-at-7.47.34-PM.png" alt="Screenshot-2023-01-29-at-7.47.34-PM.png"></div></div>
Couple of things to note on this. Yes this season Cozens is playing with 2 rookies, his previous 2 season his most common linemates his rookie year were Anders Bjork (AHL now, and wasn't even picked up on waivers), Arttu Ruotsalainen (Playing in the Swiss league because he couldn't stick in the NHL), Last season his wingers shifted a lot but the most common were Caggiula, Hinostroza, Krebs, Murray, and Okposo. Of them Okposo was the best player, Krebs was a rookie, Murray, Caggiula, and Hinostroza are basically AHL tweeners. Fiala may as well have been McDavid by comparison.
It's also worth noting the Athletics formula for calculating their projections uses what the player has done to date. Since Cozens came in to the league earlier, and didn't start showing his breakout until this season his projections are hurt by that especially his rookie season. Boldy has the benefit of coming in to the league on a better team and in a better position to succeed. If you isolate the past 2 seasons they actually have very similar production per 60 at both even strength and on the powerplay.
I'm not taking anything away from Boldy, he's an excellent young player and should absolutely be worth his contract. Cozens however gets used in all situations, plays what most consider the more important position, gets less powerplay and even strength ice time, but has better even strength production and is close in powerplay production this season. That may be why you see less people reacting negatively to his deal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sleeparc</b></div><div>Bloom is not a good prospect. so this is basically Ostlund and a 1st for Timo. It isn't enough and is easily beaten.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Skyraider112</b></div><div>Bloom is a very solid prospect. Scouts love him, he plays the game the right way. That will translate to pro success. Maybe he's not the kind of prospect you want back for Meier, but to call him "not good" is just an uneducated take.</div></div>
Here is the skinny.
The average hockey player reaches their prime about 26 and sustains that production for about another 8 years-
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/271172145_Estimating_the_effects_of_age_on_NHL_player_performance#:~:text=Our%20best%20estimate%20of%20the,and%2024%20to%2034%2C%20respectively.
Since 15 of the Buffalo Sabres who have played over 20 game are under that sweet age of 26 IMO it would be unnecessary to utilize trade capital at this point in the teams development <em>to make the playoffs.</em>
But to the trade, Josh is starting to Bloom.
At the beginning of the year, the Athletic had him ranked as <em>Has a chance to play</em> which while not great he is large and has only improved his probability this year.
Östlund is playing against full grown men (see my web site above) and scoring at 0.73 pts/gm.
These may not be the players that will get Meier but they are not chopped liver either.
As I stated above, maybe make a small move but this is not the time to upset the team chemistry.
Both Peterka and Quinn (did you see his last goal, OMW that was a highlight) both have more goals than Meier had pts playing in 34 games at the same age.
In two years they as well as Kulich, Savoie and others (i.e. the 2023 first) may produce as well as he, patience is the key.
Play hard this year, playoffs next, cup finals the following year.

The 1st and 2nd round picks are what's important in this trade for Meier. Ostlund is going to be a decent top 6 player in the near future. He already has a relationship with Eklund as well. Portillo is kind of a funny case since we already have another Michigan goaltender with Strauss Mann. I guess the more the merrier :)
If I'm the sharks, I would accept.

Seattle definitely won't be trading Borgen back to Buffalo or anywhere else, he's seized his opportunity and become a key defenseman for the team. However I do understand how the Sabres would want a higher pick, and could bump it up if that's what was needed; maybe swapping Washington's 6th rounder with Colorado's 4th rounder, for example.

Pettersson trade for fun
<a href="/users/NoWah49" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@NoWah49</a>
I guess looking purely at the offensive production and similar ages of the players one could come to conclusion that Buffalo has to add to the trade.
Let's presume Boeser and Olofsson essentially cancel each other leaving Cozens and a first for Pettersson.
This may appear to be fair but remember Dylan is playing primarily with two 20 yo wingers, while Elias is centering the top line with Boeser, Miller, Mikheyev and Kuzmenko as his primary wingers.
This is an easy pass for the Sabres for many reasons, but primarily comparing the line mates, salary, age and physical play of Dylan makes this an easy choice.
As you can see from the Sabre comments, they would clearly rather have Olofsson (no longer tagged as a PP specialist with only 4 of 19 goals coming on the PP this year) over Boeser.
Even though Brock is signed for an extra year before both become free agents, he is paid nearly $2,000,000 more per year, which considering the production of the two is too much.
Take out the first and Buffalo would still reject, if only wanting the keep the devil we know than getting one we do not.
Easy rejection by Buffalo.

Dumba Getting Scratched
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Skyraider112</b></div><div>Dumba is a solid player and would certainly be a good add to our team. However, as others have stated, the best kind of partner for Power would be a stay-at-home guy. Dumba is not that kind of player, and I'm concerned about what kind of money he'd want on a long-term deal. The perfect player for us would be a guy like Mayfield or Borgen (sad). Neither are going to be available this season. Perhaps Mayfield could sign as a FA and Borgen could be had but likely at a high cost since he's been so good for the Kraken</div></div>
I think Power's skating and current level of defensive prowess will lead to him not needing a true stay-at-home dman. He's a better skater than Dahlin already and is more responsible defensively than Dahlin was in his rookie season. I think this allows for another "complete player" to compliment him well. I may be wrong, but that's my assessment. I think we're hung up on the fact that Dahlin and Samuelsson work so well together. Devon Toews isn't a true "stay-at-home" and he works with Makar. Same as Weegar and Ekblad in recent history. Just need someone who is willing to let Power be Power and work off of him/support him, most of the time.
