i'd rather give dumba 2 years and more AAV. that way, we have more flexibility for the quinn and peterka extensions.

We have to trade Karlsson
karlsson is salary cap poison. if you want a high first coming back, they have to eat at least 4 million off of his contract. and it would be worth it for san jose to do so.

who says no
i'm just glad eichel got back to full health and realized his potential, even if it wasn't with buffalo. tuch, krebs, greenway and ostlund should all be NHL players. tuch is already a #1 RW, krebs is probably a top end #3/4C, greenway seems to be a bottom 6/PK asset, and ostlund could turn into a top 9 winger. if buffalo doesn't get a cup in 5 years, then the trade is a loss.

My Gibson offer
in the words of michael corleone, you can hear my offer for john gibson right now. nothing. i agree gibson has some game left but if i needed to win a hockey game tomorrow, i'm taking levi over gibson. there are stretches when pucks seem to hit a goaltender and their numbers may be smoke and mirrors. there is no smoke or mirrors with levi. he's a playmaker as a goalie and was at an entirely different level than UPL, comrie and anderson, all of whom had really good stretches during the season. if UPL went back down and had a good run in rochester we'd be saying he's an exciting prospect and on the up and up. since he came up, played well enough to stay, went 17-11-4, but had ups and downs, we're ready to write him off at 24? doesn't make sense to me. levi for 50, UPL for 30, and take the assets you want to trade on goaltending and get a top 4 defenseman.

this is a playoff team
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoyalBlueSabres</b></div><div>I don't thinkwe should spend assets like that on a goalie</div></div>
i know we shouldn't spend assets like that on a goalie. we can spend money for a guy like hill or andersen for two years until it's levi's crease. or we can go with levi/UPL. UPL won 17 games last season with a funky schedule after being called up. if you tell these kids at the jump, we believe in you two, get ready in the offseason for a 50-30 split, they can handle it. and that allows us a ton of cap space this season. maybe timo meier doesn't want to sign long term and we trade for him because we can qualify him. maybe we do a high two-year offer sheet for a good young player. i just think there was too much growth from UPL to give up on him. if he stayed in the AHL and had a good run, we'd be calling him a good prospect. but because he played well enough to stay up and had ups and downs, we're lower on him? that doesn't make sense to me.

and ryan johnson might be that guy after a year in the A. he could pair with power and take on the same role samuelsson does with dahlin.

because andersson is younger, cost controlled, a lot better, and still improving. we'd have dahlin-samuelsson, power-andersson, and in a year johnson-jokiharju. that's elite and in line for when levi will be ready for a long playoff run, along with kulich, peterka, quinn, krebs, in their prime. plus we'd still have ostlund/poltapov/kisakov/kozak/nadeau/neuchev in the system. we still have 2 2nd rounders this year and a 1st next year to make additions. killorn will help instill culture for two seasons and with a growing cap, our smart extensions will give us cap room to gap fill. you have to give to get.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres89</b></div><div>Overpaying in all 3 trades. Frankly by kinda a lot.</div></div>
i'd do the murray deal. picking up a first for oloffson is a win and we can afford to bury murray. he will agree to a buy out if another team will actually give him minutes in the league. if not, he'd have no choice but play well enough in the A to regain a spot and he wouldn't be bad as a 3rd goalie option. under this scenario, someone would claim comrie. maybe even toronto.

My Top 3 RD Targets
top 3 available through trade but if you're going to give up significant assets for a D, the list begins and ends with a godfather offer to calgary for andersson. if that's not in the cards, i think you load up a two year deal for severson or dumba. we have the cap space until extensions for quinn and peterka kick in, and i believe that ryan johnson can be a top 4 D with dahlin or power because he's a defensive defenseman who, like samuelsson, can focus more on their end while power and dahlin are more of the puck movers. johnson was drafted high for his high level skating and ability to shut down plays in the neutral zone. he was great in college even though the gophers played a lot of defenseman. at the very least, i think he's going to be a good 3rd pair anchor.

You can get a meaningful asset for Olofsson. A top 4 D on a short term deal is ideal. Ryan Johnson is interesting, not for next year, but much like Samuelsson, he's at his best on the defensive side. If he's put with Power, he can focus on neutral zone and in zone defending and it could work well. He's that good of a skater and defender.

It’s even less than that. You’d have to pay Bryson his full salary to be a AAAA player.

offseason
A fair offer for Hellebuyck only if he has extends and our goalies going forward are him and Levi. Then we’re set at goalie for the foreseeable future. I think that’s a little too much money and term for Jost, even though I’d like to see him back. These lines demonstrate that Olofsson is the piece that doesn’t quite fit. Cozens needs speed with him to attack off of the rush and Greenway and Olofsson have no speed. I think Cozens needs to stay with Quinn or Peterka at least, if not both. Maybe Greenway can play with Krebs and Quinn and Peterka-Cozens-Olofsson can work in a pinch. Olofsson might be traded as a deadline move because then his number with a retained salary will make him more attractive for teams to bolster the power play. For us, I think Peterka can take over his PP minutes and we’ll look to move him in the offseason.

Trading up
arizona would almost have to do that trade. rosen is a #14 overall who has had a great first season in the AHL. arizona basically started over their rebuild under doug armstrong and this would give them multiple assets in a deep draft and a prospect trending up who was drafted #14 in his year.

Sabres
the sabres are a speed team. the penguins are a puck possession team. olofsson would be effective with crosby or malkin. i know that's easy to say, but their ability to operate in the zone and olofsson's shot would be a great compliment. he'd also be a PP asset for a team whose PP is stagnant.
