5 Player Trade With MIN
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arousedcat</b></div><div>I have heard that before. I wonder why there's a discrepancy between their opinions... From what I've seen Sprong looks really good. He put up great numbers in the AHL last season (at a PPG pace) and should be able to translate his game to the NHL.</div></div>
The coaching staff endlessly talks about him needing to improve his defensive play, even though it really is not that bad. The problem was that they already had two defensive liabilities in Sheary and Kessel on the team, and I don't think they could afford to have another one in their top 9. Now that Sheary is gone, and Sprong is no longer waivers exempt, he will get a long look at playing on Crosby's RW during training camp. However, if the Pens were to deal him I would want it to be now while his value is still really high, because they screwed themselves by waiting too long to deal Derrick Pouliot and essentially got nothing for him.

5 Player Trade With MIN
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arousedcat</b></div><div>Easy no from MN.
I'd go as far to say at least a 1st rounder... Brodin > Maatta IMO, Brodin is a 1st pairing defenseman on any team without an elite 1LD (Such as Suter on MN, Hedman on TB, etc). If we didn't have Suter, he'd easily handle the 1st pairing role. He's only 25 with room to grow into an elite player as well (he has that ceiling as an elite shutdown defenseman, but he's not gunna put up great offensive numbers).
Here's a counter offer for you OP:
:penguins
Niederreiter
Brodin ($1M retained)
:wild
Maatta
Sprong
Hagelin</div></div>
I'd do that deal in an instant, but its hard to know how the Pens value Sprong. I think Rutherford is really high on him, but Sullivan wants nothing to do with him.

I think Niederreiter and Sprong have similar values, so those would be the centerpieces, and other pieces would need to move in order to make the cap work.

Sprong to MN
You could probably get a draft pick from the Pens, and not have to retain salary with this deal. It is really hard to know the value of Sprong right now because I think GMJR is really high on him, but Mike Sullivan refused to put him in the lineup last year, which was baffling. I think he has the potential to be a 30 goal scorer, but that is assuming he will play with Crosby.

big move for stronger D
I think Rutherford likes their defense and will not make a move unless something too good to turn down comes along. Also it would be very hard to fit Karlsson in at $11 million AAV for 8 years. I think Rutherford knows this cores window is probably 4 more years, and the term to a lot of the contracts shows that, and there is no reason to break up this core right now.

After the Thrill is gone- Trades I would consider if Pens GM
This would set them up for trouble when the expansion draft comes around. Right now Shultz will be a UFA when it takes place so he's safe, and they can go the 7 forwards, 3 defenseman, and 1 goalie route. They would protect (Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Hornqvist, Guentzel, Rust, Sprong, Letang, Maata, Dumoulin, and Murray) This means they could potentially try to get out of the Johnson contract then too.

They need defensemen more than a winger, and they do not need to dump salary. It doesn't make sense for them to trade a 26 year old top pairing defensemen, for a winger going on 30 who will most likely play on their second line.

Massive overpay of Pacioretty even if he signs an extension. The Pens are not that desperate for an upgrade on the wing.

Will probably take a little bit more to get Skinner, but not much, and thats one of the better Kessel deals I have seen because it would give them the cap room to resign Skinner.

The only way the Pens will get Pacioretty or Skinner is if they are on the cheap, and I still don't think getting either of them would make the Pens significantly better, especially if they have to give up Brassard.

I see Rust playing 2LW in this scenario, but overall I would be happy with this lineup, and it leaves plenty of cap space to make another move.

Then that would be a 22 man roster, and would still need to sign one more player, so your savings would be Kunitz salary minus whatever that 23rd player is making. Using money for the Kunitz argument makes zero sense if he only takes $1million.

Post Rust Signing
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>They aren't paying Rust 3 mil a year to play 4th line minutes. If that's all they thought of him, they would have never signed that contract. They are going to play him LW next year. So that skinner trade never gonna happen if you think ZAR is a 3LW.
You might see Hags traded out. go Gunz, Rust, ZAR then worry about the 4th line which can be filled cheaper. Will probably be Simon, RIley and a UFA (Chiasson, Duclair?). Either way the top 3 on the right are set, and Rust is going to get top 3 line minutes somewhere so that's either 2nd or 3rd line LW.
If they keep Hags, it's Gunz, Hags, Rust and your 4th line is Simon RIley, ZAR. Sheary and Hunwick go and that cap space pays for a new RHD. It's not bad but lets be honest a better LW would be nice but they might not be able to find one at a reasonable price with all the cap space out there.
IF they will look for an upgrade at 2LW. There are very slim pickings. Skinner probably isn't it as he has no term and that cap hit. Grabner is more likely but i doubt that too. He will sign for at least 4 mil given his last year. 27 goals and a +13 goes a long way in a new contract. JVR is probably going to be 7 mil a year, Neal isn't coming back neither is Peron. Maybe Vanek is a possibility but considering Neal wants 5+ million for his 25 goals I'm sure Vanek's 24 goals will want close to the same. I'm not sure he fits the system of what they want as a top 3 winger. Maroon maybe but he's a bit on the slow side. Maybe RIley Nash, doubt it though someone will want him to play C and he will make more doing it. They want someone with term on a reasonable contract so my guess is anyone of real talent is out and they go with what they have and fill a 4W.</div></div>
I agree on the Rust front and changed him and ZAR at the last minute, because I would see Sullivan eventually rolling with these lines. Sullivan doesn't let what a player is being payed affect his lineup decisions. Also I do think Rutherford wants to up grade the 2LW, and Skinner could come at a discount because of his NMC, and it being only for one year will not scare him away as they did the same with the Brassard trade.

Its more of what I think Hagelin's value is, and not necessarily his ultimate destination. However, It looks like Vegas is going to lose both Perron and Neal, so even if they sign Grabner they still could consider this because they don't seem too high on Tatar, considering he was a healthy scratch for much of the playoffs.

I do not think the Pens will trade away two first round picks for that deal or any. The next couple of drafts will be of players that will be coming to age as the Crosby/Malkin era starts coming to an end, so I actually see them putting somewhat of an emphasis on the draft the next 2-3 years.

Neal already turned down a $5million for 5 years from Vegas, so there is no way he will sign that deal. Also I do not think GMJR will go anywhere near him, considering the first think he did when he was hired was trade Neal for Hornqvist.

I think as long as Jarry is signed on a one way deal he will take a little bit less than $1 million, because he still doesn't have that much bargaining power to demand much more.

I do not think they will trade Maatta yet, but I do agree he is more expendable than he once was. Also I think GMJR likes their top 4, and is looking to upgrade the bottom pairing. Take ZAR, Maata, and the 2nd out of that deal, and just make it for Skinner, but I definitely like the forward group in this scenario.

There has to be a better way to fill that spot and use that money.</div></div>
You would only be saving $250k against the cap since the minimum replacement is Simon who counts for $750k. Your comments about whether or not he fits in the line up are a valid argument, but the fact that he would be a waste of money is just false. (I'm working under the assumption that he will get a 1 year for $1 million, and not the $2.5 million in this example)

Just a thought I would put some betting money on the depth forward to be from WBS in the form of Teddy Bleuger or Adam Johnson. Both guys are listed as centers and Sprong played some of his best last year along side Johnson.
The only comment I would make on your roster would be to swap Rust and Duclair. I would definitely want a more defensive minded winger with geno and kessel to cover them a little.</div></div>
Sheahan is not going to arbitration because they did not issue a qualifying offer, and I think its more likely for an arbitrator to rule in the Pens favor since Rust lacks regular season stats.

Kunitz Returns to the Burgh
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jake_H</b></div><div>Any roster that has Kunitz on it deserves exactly one star. Hell, he only had one more point than Kuhnhackl did last postseason. Kunitz would be lucky to hit 25 points next year while blocking a legit prospect like Aston-Reese, who could definitely top 30 points next season in a bottom six role. It's bad cap management on top of bad player management without even getting into other misguided moves like Moore, Nash, and Jarry, so it deserves one star.</div></div>
If you move out Sheary you can Play Aston-Reese on the 3rd line like he was before his injury, then having a 4th line with Kunitz and Rust on the wings could be very solid. Also a 4th line left wing is not going to make or break the teams ability to win the cup, because their main issue in the playoffs this year was getting zero help from anyone outside of their top line. Its ludicrous to be so damn critical of bringing in Kunitz on a one year deal.
