I doubt Pittsburgh's selling... their owners want to milk as much as possible from Crosby/Malkin and then they'll full on tank for another gen player.

Absolutely not. Pettersson should be borderline off limits.
This destroys the left side of the defense. Graves has been atrocious this year and POJ can't handle top 4 minutes.

Cap maneuvering at the deadline
Sunqvist never worked out in Pittsburgh. I'm not sure why people think that'll change.
Eller's been great in November. I'm not doing him for Boyd 1-for-1 right now, let alone also giving Arizona our top defensive prospect for him.

I used them since it’s an objective source, even though it may not be most reliable.

Adding a true 3rd line Center
Entirely aside from cap considerations, in my opinion this is a big overpay for Adam Henrique. The future first and Poulin certainly should do the job.

little bit of cap breathing room
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brgh4life</b></div><div>Just two actually. Once Bonino got hurt 3 games in Carter went to the 4th line and Granlund/Poehling was 3rd line. His stat line wouldn't be as terrible if it wasn't for the Montreal game on March 14. He only played 5:48 in that game and was on the ice for 4 goals against.
Unless they bring in another winger that's a likey 3rd. DOC might get a shot there too. I'm sure they will shuffle the bottom 6 around a lot.</div></div>
Ah - gotcha. Makes sense. A resident Pens historian haha.
I would think DOC is probably higher on the totem pole than Nieto or Nylander. As of right now I would guess DOC/Eller and then one of the other 47 bottom 6 forwards they signed lol. But yeah I agree it'll probably be shuffled a lot - especially at the beginning with Guentzel out

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brgh4life</b></div><div>A healthy playoff team and goaltending can do anything. That top 4 could be someting special, but I still worry about the bottom 6 relying on the top 6 for scoring. Either way I want to see fun hockey for the last few years of this core. They didn't deserve Hextall franking up everything the last few years.</div></div>
I think Karlsson will take a lot of pressure off the top 6 and make up for the lack of bottom 6 scoring. But I do agree, I think a bottom 6 upgrade at TDL would be best.

Stanley cup champions
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brgh4life</b></div><div>The defense is better, but the forward core is much older and the goaltending isn't as good. Murray was a different level during those runs. I like this team, but it's not as deep and not as young as those teams. I'm just excited that we brought in a talent like EK. Last year was boring. This year should at least be fun.</div></div>
It will for sure be fun, much better than last year for sure. I remember Matheson would make the games more exciting with his speed and puck movement and EK is pretty much as good as it gets when it comes to that so it's gonna be super exciting. I still have cup hopes though. Won't be devastated if we don't win, I know it's not super likely, but I think our D gives us a chance in any series. Karlsson and Letang being on the ice 50 min a game will give us a huge advantage over other teams. Once your in the playoffs too anything could happen.

Oh absolutely. But it's nice knowing the insurance in case we get swamped with injuries is NHL caliber. Might be less ice time for what little youth we have in the system, though.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brgh4life</b></div><div>Karlsson isn't going to cost all of that. Don't believe Poni he is a hack. Adding a player of Karlsson's ability instantly makes this team that much better and helps the power play immensely. There are still options for moving/buyout of Granlund and a Rutta trade. Karlsson is the biggest gamebreaker available though and should be the first attempt at making this roster more dynamic.</div></div>
I don't believe anything Poni says, he could tell me he's wearing a red shirt while standing in front of me in a red shirt and I wouldn't believe him.
That being said, pens fans also need to understand that you are indeed going to have to give some of that up in order to get Karlsson and at a retained salary. SJS isn't just going to simply give him away.

Yeah this is my feeling as well, you're probably looking at less than the Eichel package a few years ago. That package was an NHL roster player (Tuch), NHL ready A prospect (Krebs), protected 1st round pick, and a conditional second for Eichel and a 3rd round pick. Karlsson is older and more expensive than Eichel was so realistically it will probably be a NHL roster player, a prospect, and a first for Karlsson with retention and a pick.

You're right. I'm not sure the Pens should even do that. The Pens might do better spending 9.687m on UFAs.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>futurebobmckenzie</b></div><div>just tossing around ideas. don’t like the dead cap over the next 4 years (i think 4) of buying him out and don’t want to pay to get rid of him.</div></div>
The $2.5M dead cap this season (vs $833k) would be more obstructive than the $1.83M dead cap will be in years 3 & 4 when the cap is expected to resume growing next season. If they are able to find a buyer, I can’t see the Pens retaining more than $1M because of the ease of the buyout hit.
