To think, they had a chance to pick up Wedgewood for free a couple days ago. With goaltending being the biggest unknown, might have been worth carrying three goalies instead of 8D for a while.
Hunwick or Polak would have easily passed through waivers.

Ritchie is still a prospect at wing....don't the Leafs have enough of those? Rakell is playing out of position on wing....not sure if they Leafs need Rakell that much. And Lindholm is he that much better Rielly?
And that Trouba trade...Leipsic was placed and unclaimed on waivers...so how valuable is he really in trade value.</i></div></div>
Leipsic wasn't claimed by another team when demoted because he is still exempt and did not have to pass through waivers.

I think you nailed the D players, although Dermott-Nielson should be ready in 2 years to make up the third pair over Marincin-Carrick. As far as your 1RHD is concerned, Brent Burns is a UFA next year. Rielly-Burns, Gardiner-Zaitsev, Dermott-Nielson?

Possible Roster without trading away past picks.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsFan</b></div><div><i>I say this on every post like this; yes the leafs had bad player development but so do most teams.
Go to the draft boards and look at the team by team basis; look at some of the good teams. In most drafts they're lucky to get 1 or 2 NHL players, in some drafts they get none. It sometimes just takes a bit of luck</i></div></div>
Most teams are not as bad as the leafs, for example total nhl games played by the 9 maple leafs drafted in 2011 is 62. Frank Corrado alone who was drafted the same year by Vancouver has played in 67 games. Toronto draft picks in 2010 played only 73 games total, only the Canucks drafted worse and no other teams produced under 100 games. Looking through the above drafts year by year Toronto was consistantly at the bottom in producing nhl players, there were exceptions of course (Luke Schenn has actually played more games than any other leaf draftee in that period).
Also noticed that when the "good teams" didnt produce an nhl player it was when they were basically drafting only in rounds 4 to 7 because they had traded away their earlier picks.
Fortunately the new leaf regime is placing a greater emphasis on scouting and drafting, The last 2 drafts have been very successful IMO.

Only 4 players drafted in 2015 have already scored an nhl goal, Mcdavid, Eichel, Hanifin and Sprong. Need some elc guys like him and Blackwood to stay under cap.

This team obviously would not finish last and be able to draft Matthews, so he is not included. Just wanted to show what kind of talent is possible to obtain through drafting alone. Hopefully in 8 years from now all us leaf fans can look back and be able to say the leafs built properly through the draft with excellent scouting and development.... and also have a cup to show for it.

Not in a Babcock system. He is all about LH plays left RH plays right.</i></div></div>
Ok, let me try this again. Winnipeg wants Trouba to play top 4 on the left side. Trouba asks for a trade because he doesnt like playing his off side. Does trading for Lindholm, who is left but plays his off side, not leave them with the same potential problem?

Way too much for Trouba IMO, Gardiner plus a LW prospect like Leipsic or A. Johnson (or both) should be good enough.

Gardiner, plus a prospect (Leipsic/Johnson) and ONE pick should be all the leafs are willing to give up. Now that Trouba has demanded a trade, teams should be able to get him for less.

You cannot use other teams picks in an offer sheet. Ottawa will need to get their own second back, good luck getting it from Toronto.

Creating better balance
I think you are wrong on Dermott. ESPN has him ranked as 90th out of the top 120 prospects. For reference, Ryan Pulock is 94, Madison Bowey is 102, Roland McKeown is 109, Brandon Montour is 118. Morin isn't on the list. Morin projects to be more a shutdown guy, whereas Dermott is a puck mover, so maybe you can't really compare them anyways.

What I would do
Although Russia does not have the strongest D, Zaitsev is playing on the top pair and eating the most minutes (is on the penalty kill and power play) on the world squad. I imagine he would easily beat out Marincin for the first pair based on his performance provided he continues his strong play into training camp. I don't think anyone would claim Hunwick either, so he should be demoted over Laich IMO.

Komarov alone should be enough to get Yak and a pick. Leafs need to keep Dermott as he will be replacing Gardiner in 3 years. Considering Stoners horrible contract and the favour to Anahein for taking it, I dont think TO needs to add Rychel or the pick.

I agree that both Johnson and Gardiner are used incorrectly above (although I see no reason Gardiner could not move to the rightside) but you wrong regarding Komarov and Laich. Komarov made a substantial number of starts on Kadri's right side last year. Laich played both wing positions as required when Gauthier and Froese were called up at the end of the year, and even spent some time on Bozak's wing.
