This still does not make sense. You would likely be looking at 30-35% retention for your math to work. Taking Haglin as the cap dump notwithstanding, aside from spong, what incentive is there to make this trade from mtl perspective. On top of that you want mtl to eat 2.5M for 5years. I cant imagine you would be alright with signing JG to 6Mx5 then retaining 2M in return for MTL 3rd, 5th, Hudon, and Alzner.

Super confused by the Chucky valuation. Obviously two 2nds are worth significantly more than one 3rd. So perhaps you think Galchenyuk is only worth an early 3rd?

While I agree it would never happen straight up as LA would need to add, it drives me nuts when people compare players solely based on the current year point performance. By your logic, you wouldn't trade William Karlsson for Seguin because he has less points and is a UFA after next year.

I had similar thoughts on the Ryan Contract, but really this was more about the premise and not so much about getting each detail perfect. Nonetheless, i think the 5M mark for this, and the next four years is still a terrible contract. If this year and last are any indication of what we can expect from him moving forward, your looking at a winger scoring less than 30pts, and injured for a quarter of the season for approx 5M (which is right on par with Gaborik)

Also, why would MTL ever give up their third in the plek deal? Think about it this way... Why give up a 3C for your playoff run so that I can move from 66th to 60th (approx). Makes more sense just to take a last minute 3rd rounder from any team willing to offer one up.

Keep Core - 2018-19 - 79M Cap
The trouble with this years draft (for the habs at least) is that they're probably better off taking a D over a winger (which is what BT is) if they end up in that 4-7 zone. Now I can live with your 4th... however, I immediately fire you as head scout just for passing up on Joe Veleno twice after the first pick. Kid is arguably one of the top 3 NA centres available... will likely be taken before 20th pick.

Good first effort, but the one thing you have to consider with these things is the long term outlook. Being reliant on so many elc contracts really puts your team in a tough spot even with a steady cap increase year over year.

If by cheap enough, you're talking about his contract, I hate to break it to you, but EDM will be hard pressed to find a better value contract in the nhl. And in all reality Byron wont be going anywhere at that price. He literally costs about 25k/point. If you can list another 20G+ winger making less than 1.1M id love to hear it.

I personally see hudon as a sure thing to crack a top 6 spot on most teams. He's basically there now... albeit, on a bad habs team, but one that has no shortage of depth on the wing. As a rookie, he's a puck posession beast at 56%, he can play all 3 positions in a bind, is good defensively... his only problem has been his astonishing/unlucky 3% shooting percentage (boeser and keller are the only rookies who are outshooting him). So yes i think he has top 3 potential.

Re: Trading for Weber? LOLOLOL
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LobbysOilers</b></div><div> cap recapture penalties are not an asset man, come on now</div></div>
Although I still think that most of your points (new and old) are easily refutable, I just want to clear up one point so you understand.
In the final 3 years of Webers deal his salary is only 1M (cap hit of 7.8M). Outside of the value to a team looking to hit the cap floor, the real value results from recapture. Using the last 3yrs as an example, if he were to retire in any of those years the cap hit against Nashville would be one of the following...
3yrs @ 8M (2023-26)
2yrs @ 12M (2024-26)
1yr @ 24M (2025-26)
Now if you are Dave Poile would you rather have Weber on Nashville's LTIR (no cap penalty), or lose 10%, 15%, 30% of your Cap for nothing (using 80M) which would ultimately force you into a position where you have to trade away valuable assets for crap returns. To put things into perspective, EDM will have about 19M available at the beginning of next year with only 13 guys on the books. Assuming you somehow had 10 players making the minimum 650K you would literally be 12.5M over the cap if a surprise retirement added 24M to your books.

8. russell balances salary on shorter term than weber.</div></div>
Im not going to get mean about it like some of the other posters but your value is way off, which is no big deal as i assume you follow EDM more so than the habs. With that said here are the basics.
Scherbak > Yam : while i think they have similar ceilings, the habs player is 3 years ahead in development (not to mention is tearing it up in the ahl)
Gallagher > Lucic : 3 years ago i might have given this one to lucic, but Gallagher is also a 50pt winger... however he is on a sweetheart deal & is entering his prime. The exact opposite holds true for lucic.
Juulsen > Russell: If both were on our team next season, juulsen would be ahead on the depth chart. Add to that the fact that he is 10yrs younger and on an elc instead of 4m cap hit.
RNH is a 2C... the moment you sell him as 1C is the moment i sell Chucky as a 1C too (evidenced by last season)
All montreal has is depth (their real need is a legit #1C and a top pair puck moving LD) so strome and slepyshev dont really hold much value to MTL.
I shouldn't have to explain which 1st rounder is better.
Lastly, Your point on webers age and contract hold no weight for your argument. he is one player over 30 that costs us 7.8M. You want to saddle MTL with 2x30yr old players that cost 10M (14m if you consider the salary retension)... on top of all of this, webers contract holds value in the final 3 years due to the possible recapture penalty should he retire early.
Again, if you can legitimately refute any of the points im making, i would love to hear it.

next year yo
Besides the fact that you cannot trade a player on IR, no chance in a 4/5 LD (whom MTL has a slew of) and a 26 year old winger who has still not been able to solidify a full time gig on bottom dwelling teams, will get Shaw (let alone Shaw and a 3rd).
Also, all the hype around Kane is just that. Teams just don't give away their Top Prospect + 1st Rounder + Top 9 Roster Player + something else for a rental. If buffalo was in a playoff position today, could you honestly see your team coughing up (Middlestadt + 2018 1st + Girgensons + 2019 3rd) for James Neal?

Weber properly
First, There is zero chance in MTL trading Weber unless its a lateral/upgrade on D or for a legit #1C... Doing so means that Bergevin is basically signing his own pick slip.
Second, Weber is a #1 D (for now) and will be a Top pairing guy for at least another 3-4 years with the right partner (barring injury of course). Not that MTL/TOR deal would ever happen, but if your moving him for prospects, you better believe the starting price would be Liljegrin.
Lastly, Everyone seems to complain about the length of his contract as if it is a major burden to Montreal... but few people recognize that his contract holds value in the final years if there is even a chance he might retire before 40. In other words, I wonder what Nashville would give up in order to put Weber on LTIR instead of facing an 8Mx3, 12Mx2 or even 24Mx1 cap hit.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>Does Pleks bring anything to the table that would justify trading even a second rounder for?</div></div>
Plek for a 2nd would be good, but that's likely the most I would expect. The one thing he does have going for him is his Defense. If I recall correctly, he has something like 9-10GA while on the ice 5v5 for the season, but all he does is play against the opposing teams top lines. He is about 53-54% FOs, and is on pace for 30ish pts. Basically, he's the guy you want on the ice when your up a goal with a couple minutes left to play.

Asset management is about knowing when the right time to maximize your return versus the benefit of not doing it. What good is Gallagher and Byron if the team is a bottom feeder for the next 3-4 years?</div></div>
You say the goal is to give young players minutes... With Patch and Some of the useless D gone, tell me which position has so much depth that young guys cant get ice time. I'm not saying these players are untouchable, just that you have to consider that they provide something beyond points/wins/spots in the lineup. They can help the rebuilding process.
You cant tell me that guys like Bitton & Evans wont benefit from Gallaghers style of play. Much like the benefit of Weber as he ages... it wont be his defensive prowess, but instead what he is able to do for young defensive prospects.

Moving Byron, or Galligher would be silly.
You will never get anything close in value to what Byron provides (and at the cost he provides it).
And the same for Galligher, especially as he enters his prime.
