Caps trade for Garland
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brady_t12</b></div><div>This is the one reason I think the caps should just ride out Mantha’s contract. There are some really interesting names out there on the trade front, but the cap space this off-season could be huge if they just hold him and let him walk in July.</div></div>
Totally agree. There's much more to gain by having all that cap space this summer as opposed to locking yourself into another $5M middle six winger contract

Oilers All in
Very quick and easy no from the Hurricanes I think. Necas is an important piece to the puzzle up front, I doubt they get rid of him for anything other than a dynamic, top of the lineup forward.

Caps trade for Garland
I love Garland as a player and think this makes us a lot better, but I wonder if the term on Garland's deal makes us shy away. I get the sense that the cap going up + Mantha's expiring deal means the Caps could look to use that money to make a splashy FA signing (Nylander?)

I love the concept behind the Flames trade. I wonder if Hanifin would be a backup option if Toews ends up being out of their price range. Adding Lindholm gives them championship level forward depth too.
Given the term Girard has left, he's definitely the kind of guy the Flames should be targeting too. There may need to be more total value going back given what they could probably get if they shipped them out separately, but I love the idea.

Ullmark trade
I think trading him with retention to New Jersey is the most interesting scenario. If Vanecek goes back the other way, depending on what the retention is that move could end up saving cap space for the Devils. Also the team that I think should be going the hardest for a goaltending upgrade, given it looks like their window is about to be wide open soon

I think making a trade along these lines makes a lot of sense, I'd just be weary of taking that Cizikas contract

I'll never understand the obsession with moving Jarnkrok. I get wanting to free up cap space to do something, but swapping him out for Kane seems silly. Jarnkrok scored 20 last year and is signed at a good rate for another few years. That's the type of guy the Leafs need more of, not less.

Still haunted by that 2016 draft. I can't even be mad about passing on Thompson, but everyone shied away from Debrincat just because of his size. Man, what could've been

No real reason for Dallas to make that move. If they're making a big move, I'd bet its for a defenseman. They seem to be the most logical Pesce destination

Nylander wants to be a Capital confirmed
Would absolutely love Nylander. Since the cap will be lower than this, either Kuznetsov has to go or Backstrom gets LTIRed. But he’s the exact guy to get to pair with Ovechkin IMO

2023-2024 Lineups
Tough for me to see this being a playoff team right now. Being healthier than last season will help, but Oshie is still a lock to miss at least 20 games and who knows what you get out of Backstrom now. I think if everything goes right for the Caps (relatively healthy, Kuznetsov rebounds, Sandin takes another step, the players respond well to Carberry, etc.) then they should be in the wild card chase. It's just so tough to say with confidence that this team has anything exciting about it other than the chase to 894

Only Nylander trade Id do
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rags21</b></div><div>You’re right. But if there’s a change, I think it’s trading Laffy if he has another below average season</div></div>
I agree that next offseason is when you need to pull the plug while his value is still relatively high. I think Wheeler is going to be a really good mentor for both Lafreniere and Kakko, showing them some of the ins and outs of driving play from the wing. Underrated pickup IMO

I'd love to bring Nylander to DC, but at this point it seems like it'd only happen if he hits UFA. Even then, there will still be some financial hurdles to jump through to make it happen.

The Rangers making a move like this kinda seems like it's making a change just for the sake of making a change. I don't think the Rangers are at the point where this type of move is necessary

I think instead of waiving Lindgren they'll roll with 22 skaters until Pacioretty is ready to come back and then make decisions from there. Kuemper is beginning to build a bit of an injury history, and Lindgren did a good job filling in when he went down for a while. Frank can develop more in Hershey to keep better goaltending depth

I actually think this is something the Caps would consider. It frees up some money and Roslovic is a pretty good player and a bit younger. I don't hate this at all

I think something like this is pretty realistic, so kudos there, but boy does this not get me excited. Seems like this team is on a freight train towards the pre-Kaprizov Minnesota Wild levels of mid

That draft pick better be top 10 protected because this makes the Caps significantly worse. Kuemper has been better than Gibson the last few years, so there's no need to make that move. Strome has a role as a good second line center, definitely going to get more out of him than Backstrom at this point. These moves would sink this team IMO

I think if the Sharks end up getting Granlund and Petry, their best bet is to see if they can up their value and try to send them elsewhere instead of taking on the instant dead weight in Ristolainen.

Calgary Retool WAS POV
I don't think this is something the Caps are very interested in. These moves seem to raise their floor but lower their ceiling, given the potential for Kuznetsov to get his game back on track. I think if Kuznetsov is getting traded, it'll be because the Caps are bringing in another high ceiling forward. Neither Backlund nor Johnson really do the trick there IMO

Kuznetsov Mantha for Boeser Garland
This is an interesting idea for sure. If this decision had to be made right now, I think the Caps would pass since the best shot they have of being a real threat is Kuznetsov having a year like he did in 21-22. But if this deal is still on the table a few months into the season and Kuzy hasn't found his footing yet, I'd pull the trigger for sure

Deal
I think the Caps pass on this, unless freeing up the ~2M is necessary for another move, which seems unlikely given the guys reportedly available. As disappointing as this past year was, the ceiling with Mantha is still higher than Armia's, and it's an expiring deal.

Caps wouldn't make that trade. Fehervary is going to be a big part of the retool, Brodie wouldn't be. Adding a draft pick from Washington's end is also rather silly
