I'll be that guy that disagrees with Eklund Hertl Zadina. Eklund looked smothered, gave up the puck from losing battles, and was forced to ditch the puck a lot. He needs some time to build chemistry with someone else. Not sure its best to put him on 1st line at this point over other reclamation project vets or Barbie

I assume this deal is Nylander coming with an extension in place? because no way SJ would do this when Nylander will just walk to free agency.
Futures are more important to a rebuilding Sharks. They traded away Meier and he is younger than Nylander... Just doesn't make any sense unless you're a leafs fan

Looking back at Karlsson
Stutzle was pure luck/fluke and not intended to be anyway significant value in the trade, so there's not really a comparison that can be fairly made
Sharks were assuming it would be a late 1st and didn't see the tank coming; pretty much everyone has been protecting their 1sts since

Arizona Coyotes signed Matt Dumba (1 Year / $3,900,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jr400</b></div><div>Not entirely. Teams acquiring deadline rentals are usually already close to the cap, so the lower a player's cap hit, the easier it is to find somebody who can take him. But somebody should be able to squeeze Dumba in at just under $2M if Arizona retains 50%. They have two retention slots left. They can use the other one on Zucker.</div></div>
it's weird you disagree with me then agree with me lol
they'll be able to find a buyer for him at $1.95m and easy-cheesy to retain the rest of the season. It's a good move and wish Grier made it instead

ARZ will be looking to trade him retained at the TDL for assets, so the overpay comments are kind of irrelevant

You were right that the offer is an overpay for Hertl but your counteroffer is just as bad in the opposite direction. You're undervaluing Hertl way too much. He probably would fetch something a bit less than what Meier got, with futures being more the focus

Yeah that part of the trade burned pretty good. Like the rest of it makes sense for long term cap flexibility, but giving up a 3rd when SJ should be collecting assets? Booo.
It is in 2026 though, so likely they imagine not needing the pick as much as PIT will around that time. Imagine when they sell off at the TDL they will be more focused on 2024 and 2025 picks.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Are they though? Let's do the math.
Karlsson is owed $39M over the next 4 years. San Jose retained 13%, or $5M. They took back 3 players: Hoffman ($5M), Granlund ($11M) and Rutta ($5M). This trade is costing them $26M in cash over the next 4 years.
If they had simply retained 50% on Karlsson, that would have cost them $19.5M over the next 4 years. So this trade is NOT saving them money.
Here's the other thing: what would the return have been if they had offered to retain 50%? I would think it would be significantly higher in terms of picks & prospects.
Yes they do free up more cap space in year 3 and 4 doing it this way, but with the cap set to rise significantly and SJS not poised to come out of their rebuild any time soon, is this really any use to them?
I don't see any way to couch this as a successful manoeuvr by Grier.</div></div>
Grier wanted cap space and I also don't understand it.
Will be interesting to see what Grier does with the space. In 2 years Grier might make this trade look more favorable.

You're right but I still wish SJ retained more to max return on picks

Wow SJ loss depending on what they do with the cap space, but they're going to be rebuilding
PIT AND MTL win
Best part of this trade is Hoffman and Karlsson being involved in the same trade with their prior drama
