Offseason
Ignore the other Canes fans here, if they could dump Kotkaniemi for that, they’d do it in a heartbeat.

More realistic offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>lowblocksniper</b></div><div>Not sure about Fast but, trading Staal is extremely unrealistic</div></div>
Fast is underrated. Perfect top 9 guy, can play on any line and in any situation. Sure, he’s not going to give you 20g or 40pts, but he’s one of those glue guys that do the little things that contribute to wins.
To me, the main decisions the Canes have 3 major decisions to make this off-season:
1 - Which one of Necas/Guentzel do they keep? Jarvis being retained is a given. Personally, I think Guentzel walks and they keep Necas.
2 - The blue line. Is it financially feasible/responsible to keep one of Pesce/Skjei? If both walk, who replaces one of them in the top 4?
3 - Which center out of Kuzetsov, Kotkaniemi or Drury do you jettison? Not enough room on roster to keep all 3 and bad for cap to keep them all. My bet is they end up trading Drury for a young-ish roster D and keep the other 2. Dumpling Kotkaniemi is likely too costly.

CANES FANS--Do you honestly think you re-sign Jake Read description
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>batman</b></div><div>Waddell said they hope to get him signed</div></div>
While I don’t doubt it will be thier intention to try to re-sigh him, I don’t think Waddell has said thus publicly.
If they re-sign, Guentzel at the likely $8M+ it would take, then I think they will have to jettison Kotkaniemi. They also have half their blueline to rebuild this summer, not to mention the RFA statuses of Necas and Jarvis to deal with.
Signing 30yr old Guentzel for 8yrs for $8M+ goes against everything they’ve done so far, but this is also te first rental they’ve paid up for and he’s proven to be an excellent fit. My gut tells me he walks, but I also won’t be too surprised if they somehow keep him. Keeping him tho, means tough decisions elsewhere in the roster.

What I Could See the Canes Doing If Guentzel Walks
I have a sneaking suspicion that it’s more likely than not they end up signing Guentzel. It’ll cost them, but I think they keep him in the end, maybe 65% odds they extend him.
In that scenario, I think they dump Kotkaniemi and his almost $5M or buy him out. Then you have a bit, albeit still pretty tight, of room to bridge Jarvis and lock up Necas long term. The D would certainly take a hit.

Extentions
If they keep Guentzel, I’m guessing it takes at least $8M x 7, perhaps more. Maybe the Svechnikov deal at $7.75M by 8 gets it done, but have my doubts. The Canes would certainly be out of their comfort zone giving a 30yr old term, we’ll see. I think they definitely make a run at keeping him, but ultimately him staying will depend on him being agreeable to knowing he’d get more on the open market than what the Canes will offer. Is he OK with that?
If they’re giving term to either Pesce or Skjei, I’d hope it’d be Skjei. He’s going to hold up better than Pesce imho.
I also think they’ll need to make a decision on Kotkaniemi or Kuznetsov this summer. Can’t have both on roster making ~$4M.

It’ would take a heck of a lot more than $6M per to entice Pesce to sign in Canada.

Canes bring the band back mostly
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gumshoeismygod</b></div><div>If the Canes aren't willing to go over even 8M for Guentzel then he will be gone so fast.</div></div>
That’s likely where they see him. Paying him much over $8M on a long term deal would be the opposite of what they’ve been doing. Maybe they offer him the Svechnikov deal, 8 X 7.75M, maybe not. Again, I don’t see them going much over $8M for him, if even that much.
There’s zero chance they’d be neglecting the blueline like that.

That’s an awful blueline and too much for Necas.
Don’t seem them going much over $8M for Guentzel.

You don’t get it.
The Canes wouldn’t extend JG for what he wanted, so in no way would they ever consider trading Necas, still an RFA with some team control, for a soon to be 30yr old UFA.
