Jets and Habs Swap Assets

Created by: RoadRunner72
Team: 2018-19 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 24, 2018
Published: Aug. 25, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Jets want some longer term certainty on top 4 D-men, so Trouba is out. Petry is proven right shot D, with 3 years of certainty at $5.5M.

Habs also help Jets on cap issue by taking Perrault, and improve the back-up goalie situation. Jets will need that cap space next year for Laine, Connor, etc. etc.

Habs get younger, taking some risk they can re-sign Trouba, and that good prospect Vesalainen will develop as expected.

Again with posting a trade that heavily favors the Habs but trying to play it off like you're a fan of the team getting screwed?

The point is Trouba will be gone next summer, they can't afford him. Petry fills the gap for 3 years at reasonable cost, and actually has very similar numbers across the board. Only difference is age. What the Jets are getting for Vesalainen is $4M in cap space for each of the next 3 years by losing 30 year old Perrault in a cap dump.

They can afford him. He just does not want to be there.

This deal sucks for the Jets any way you try to spin it.

Yeah this is robbery. Trouba, even on an expiring contract is still going to cost more then that. Not to mention Petry has a full NTC NMC. Versalainen is an intriguing player, but he won't be doing much in MTL with the winger depth that we have. Montreal isn't in much of a need for RDs as they are for a star puck-moving LD. I could see Trouba going to the leafs.

I like the creativity, however. Have not seen this type of trade.

Everyone thinks Trouba is a UFA next year ... he's an RFA.

I was interested to see what it would look like on Jets cap and line-up. Sorry it's got you so upset. Maybe you should just let it go.

Sure his time as a Jet is likely ending, but he's still under team control as an rfa which means that his contract does not hinder his value. Also, trading a super high-end prospect for cap relief is an awful idea especially considering that Perrault is actually a good player who certainly would have real value to most teams in the league.

You're right, the deal is not very balanced. Seemed reasonable to me 20 minutes ago, but the Jets could do better. Will be interesting to see how it all works out in the Peg over the next couple of years. Lots of assets to manage.

I recognize the Jets could do better than this. I'm thinking ahead to get some LW depth in Montreal once Pacioretty is gone and the young centers are getting their feet wet. Apparently I got a little greedy by trying to grab Trouba and Vesalainen at the same time.

this is just a terrible trade from a Habs fan thinking that other teams are going to give them every asset that is better than the ones they are giving up.

That's what being an Armchair GM is all about. Shoot for the stars and get shot down in flames. No harm intended and no harm done.

this Has to be a troll, this can’t be serious, is petry really a deal at 5.5 for 3 more years, and u also trade niemi as he’s worth anything he’s been bouncing ever since he left sj with minimal value, and a third rounder for a first rounder two years ago a top 4 dman and a forward with durability issues, that you call a cap dump but what is really a leader in room, and between him and little withstand a lose of wheeler next summer if it goes that way, and a cheap token veteran goalie that ends up spending the majority of his time with moose. Got to be a troll

Trouba isn't a problem contactually. What the Jets need 2019/20 is cap relief. Someone how they have to rid themselves of some iffy cap players so they can sign players they really want.
Montreal has some cap space. Would they interested in Perrault and Little? If Jets could jettison those two guys and Kulivov without taking money back in a trade, that would ideal for Jets. Don't worry about anything in return, just get cap space.

Good point. Jets have everything they need in terms of personnel and prospects. The problem is keeping them under the cap constraints they have.
