I do not envy the amount of criticism this completely rational thought is going to get....... funny thing is that Kane was way more talented than toews and they got the same contract. marner and matthews are much closer in talent than Kane and toews

Why is Marner better than Mark Stone and Kucherov?
So why are the leafs overpaying him by 2.2 million?

I dont know, why is going to get more than Mckinnon and why is Nylander getting 10 million a year, which is more than almost everyone!

Fail from your side in Nylander case...you need to dig deeper and you will understand it.

Also, McKinnon struggled the final year of RFA deal and Avs gambled on him getting better. So thats why McKinnon has such a great contract.

Ok, why did Nylander make 10 million this year, 4 million more than Mckinnon and still paying him more than Mckinnon on the cap. The answer to your question you ask is as time goes on players make more than other guys who are better. Mckinnon is way better than Nylander

It's not the same situation at all. Salaries are base league wide....not individual teams. Toews was on ELC for three years, then he signed a "nice" 5 year contract. His current deal is the one he got after being in the league after eight years. But if you think it's the same.....what a stretch.

He actually made 10 million cause of the signing bonus and when he came back. Due to him missing almost half the season and his bulk of his salary being bonus his cap hit was over 10 million.

They are not overpaying they just weren't able to get him to sign for his market value for any additional years.

    Let me enlighten you :

    NYLANDER (minor fail )

i was giving him 7 x 6,8M in my simulations at season start cause 61 + 61 and inflation with cap raise ( otherwise point-contibution would make him 6,5M max)

i believe Nylander was a pre-made setup, which allowed TML to give him money he wanted but with higher pay-check this year cause it was affordable. By holdout he was losing 20k per day, which in two months resulted in 1,2M deficit on his account. Distract that from 10,27M and you get 2M surplus to spread over 6 years on top of 6,9M contract which makes him 6 x 7,2M, so 600k above what he should get based on his previous two seasons production .In my books not such a tragedy in overpayment.

    Before signing comparable to :
    Kutcherov ( 3 x 4,7M on top of 66 + 65)
    Gaudreau ( 6 x 6,7M on top of 64 + 78 )
    Monahan ( 7 x 6,4M on top of 34 + 63 + 62 )

Mackinnon was 63 + 38 + 52 at the time he signed contract. Kid started to shine two years to late.....

John Tavares made 15 million this season. Does that mean he is worth 2.5 million more then McDavid? You should learn about cap hit bud

Okay is Matthews better than McKinnon or barkov? Why did the leafs over pay him by 5 million?

both guys you mentioned play in tax free stats so 9 million there is the same as 11 million in Canada. Obviously tax breaks and US dollar currency exchange comes into play but it’s easy to sell a player on taking less money when the state is taking as of your money.

Obvious answer to me is that Marner is better than stone and kucherov took a massive discount similar to Crosby in Pittsburgh bc he likes Tampa

Ottawa wont do leafs any favors. Which is exactly what that Marleau trade is. They can reach the floor other ways. Honestly I dont think any team will be giving them favors and I dont think Marleau would agree to any trades

Toews and Kane signed each for $10.5M for 8 years after winning 3 cups and after finishing 5 year deals worth both $6.3M a year. They signed those deals before the 15/16 season. Here we are 4 years later. As a % of cap hit at that time ($71.4M cap) it was 14.7%. Assuming the cap is $83M, that equals $12.2M cap hit today.

While Marner is good, he's not proven what Kane had at that time to deserve a 14.7% team cap hit contract.

They also got a way smaller cap % on their first deals.
