Reinhart has just as much talent as Kapanen, imagine if Eichel had Marner on his wing and J.T. playing 2nd line C, Eichel would be a 120 point player. Even with the Sabres lack of talent he is closing in on being a 100 point player.

Up until this season, Matthews career worst in goals was higher than eichels career best. Even as Eichel broke 30 for the first time, Matthews was on track for 50+ this year. Matthews has scored at a 1 point per game pace 3 out of 4 seasons, Eichel has done it 2 out of 5. Matthews has made the playoffs each season in the NHL, Eichel hasn’t done it once.

Eichels contract is better but on the ice it’s Matthews.

Jack eichels 2C last year was Marcus Johansson, curtis Lazar and evan rodrigues. Auston Matthews 2C was john tavares.

Matthew's had zero 5 on 5 points without nylander, tavares or marner on the ice.

Are you honestly telling me if they switched teams eichels point production wouldn't sky rocket past matthews?

Eichel is the singular focus of every team playing buffalo, with very little else to focus on and he still puts up equal production to matthews

Why would Buffalo make this trade? Eichel is under long term control, Matthews could walk home to Arizona once his contract is up. This is pretty bad for the Sabres.

Time will tell. His whole career has been one cold season followed by a hot season. He is still one of the best goal scorers in the league and is quite easily the most talented skater in the league too. Solid defensively and plays a pesty game. He isn't worth 9 mil, but his contract isn't that bad. Play him with Eichel and he will get 30 goals a year quite easily

Eichel has had reinhart and skinner, and had Kane early in his career. also his production isn’t equal, Matthews has outscored him every season. It’s also worth noting that matthews spent half of last year playing with Johnson and Kapanen and still scored 37 goals even with nylander struggling as much as he did once he came back.

Also in his first 2 years Matthews didn’t have Tavares and still made the playoffs and scored more goals in either season that eichel did, even though he missed 20 games in one of them.. Eichel had O’Rielly both of those seasons.

The contract is the only thing that would make the leafs consider this but if skinner is in the deal it’s a hard pass. Kerfoot is a centre which is a bigger need for Toronto.

Eichel missed alot of time in 2 consecutive seasons too and thanks for equating skinner and reinhart to your big 4. I'll use that in other arguments.

Bottom line, Matthews at the very least splits with tavares having to face other teams top defensive matchups and also plays on a much better team yet doesnt outscore eichel. Advantage Jack

Counterpoint: Matthews has a better points per game in EVERY SINGLE SEASON he's been in the NHL compared to Eichel (before Tavares came to Toronto) and has scored more points in every season except last season (where he missed time but scored at a better points/game rate). And thanks for admitting the Leafs are "much better" than the Sabres, good to see some of their fans are coming around about the state of the team. Matthews has been a point per game player to this point in his career, Eichel isn't. This isn't about linemates or matchups, we're talking about who is the better player. Matthews is a better scorer than Eichel, and plays a more well-rounded game.

I'd take 5 years of Matthews over 8 years of Eichel. It's like the Raptors trading Derozan for Kawhi... they made the window shorter but raised the ceiling.

I disagree. But it's nice to have 2 world class players face off several times a year. Hopefully we can figure things out as a team and make it a compelling rivalry
