Top 10 Centers in NHL

Description
Genuinely there seems to be no consensus here. I see people post Eichel or Matthews and Pettersson so I'm genuinely curious. Left side is the top 4 in my mind. Right side is everyone else who gets talked about in top centers of league (in random order, they are not ranked at all). Who do you think is currently the top 10 centers in the NHL?

Giroux isn't C
Zibanejad, Seguin, Schenn, Couture, Kopitar, Barzal, Point, Kuznetsov aren't top10

Then put whoever you want but agreed for the top4

I'd say the top 4 is pretty solid. Out of the right column Bergeron, Eichel, Stamkos, Matthews, Tavares, Barkov stand out for me.

My Top 10 would probably be:
1. McDavid
2. Crosby
3. Draisaitl
4. MacKinnon
5. Matthews
6. Barkov
7. Eichel
8. Tavares
9. Stamkos
10. Bergeron

But I could be convinced to put a couple others instead.

Trouble is, Pettersson doesn't play center. JT Miller is the center on that line.

For me:

McDavid
Crosby
MacKinnon
Draisaitl
Matthews
Malkin
Eichel
Barkov
O'Reilly
Pettersson (this is my only wild card pick in this top-10.)

But its really fricking hard to get it done since there is like 15 players who can be in 5-10 range

They switch off, and Pettersson will be the first line center for the next 10+ years in Vancouver

That's actually fascinating. I feel like guys like Malkin and Stamkos are often hurt that people tend to forget how good they can be when they're healthy. Kinda surprised you've got Eichel over Draisaitl, but he literally carries Buffalo with no help. I think Pettersson will eventually get there, but I don't know if I'd put him that high up yet. Good luck with the Leaf fans that are gonna come after you for having Matthews outside your top 5, but solid list overall.

10 is such an arbitrary cutoff. there are so many Cs that I would rank so close together and its hard to only choose a few to fill out a top 10 list. Also not sure if players like Drai/Giroux/Pettersson/etc even qualify as Cs but ill just put everyone here in a tier list

Tier 1:
McDavid
Crosby
Tier 2:
MacKinnon
Tier 3:
Matthews
Eichel
Draisaitl
Malkin
Tier 4:
Stamkos
Bergeron
Aho
Couturier
Barkov
Point
Scheifele
Tavares
Tier 5:
Pettersson
Zibanejad
O'Reilly
Giroux
Tier 6:
Kopitar
Barzal
Toews
Backstrom
Kuznetsov
Couture
Seguin
Schenn

You make a great point about so many players who could be considered, especially when factoring in 2 way ability, performance in the playoffs and whatnot.

I would say Drai has converted back to a full time center at this point, so I would consider him a C.

Honestly the tier system might be a better way to do it. Doesn't really knock anyone, but clarifies the separation between the players and places them with others of similar capabilities.

I'd personally switch Tavares for Malkin, but those would be the top 10 guys on my list as well.

Seems just as arbitrary. Just rather than ranking individual players it ranks groups of players. Probably would cause less arguments which is great (because really who cares who's ranked 6th instead of 8th or something), but there still isn't a defined parameter for cutoffs.

Scoring isn't everything, but here are the top-10 centers by P/GP over the past 2 seasons (min 100 GP):

1. McDavid: 1.50
2. Draisaitl: 1.41
3. MacKinnon: 1.27
4. Crosby: 1.23
5. Malkin: 1.19
6. Stamkos: 1.18
7. Matthews: 1.11
8. Eichel: 1.10
9. Point: 1.08
10. Zibanejad: 1.07

Here's the list by total points:

1. Draisaitl: 93-122-215
2. McDavid: 75-138-213
3. MacKinnon: 76-116-192
4. Stamkos: 74-90-164
5. Eichel: 64-96-160
6. Barkov: 55-103-158
7. Scheifele: 67-90-157
8. Point: 66-90-156
9. Matthews: 84-69-153
10. Zibanejad: 71-78-149

Question for the group: is Crosby still a top-2 center in the league on merit? He's scored at a 100 point pace just once in the past 6 years and his on-ice GF% was positive just once in the past 3 years (both happened in 2018-19).

Look at their faceoff stats. Miller took 718 faceoffs while Pettersson took just 141 (6th most on the team). He'll likely play center in the future, but he isn't doing so now. In any case, he isn't top-10 in the league, so no need to have this conversation really.

Definitely a top 10 C or winger. If you watch him he makes everything happen all over the place. He will probably get 100 points next year and then people will realize how good he is.

Leon Draisaitl # of faceoffs taken

2017-18: 1198 (1st on team / 26th in league)
2018-19: 1340 (1st on team / 17th in league)
2019-20: 1269 (1st on team / 11th in league)

Yup, he's a winger.

giroux is one of the best faceoff men in the league and he is very much so a winger, center isnt all taking faceoffs, they teach you that in atom

Same thing has been said about so many players scoring 40-50 goals. I'll never understand these unreasonable predictions or assumptions about players. Until they start realizing that potential it's only talk as far as I'm concerned.

what i'm saying is he is a threat every time he is on the ice and wherever he is on the ice. For his age you basically never see players like that besides Mcdavid, sure, he hasn't gotten the big 100 point season yet but he definitely has the skills for it.
