Using our cap space this off season

Created by: corson
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 6, 2020
Published: Jun. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Future lines: (2022-23)
Drouin-KK-Suzuki
Perfetti-Rossi-Caufield
Tatar-Danault-Gally
Gourde-Evans-Ylonen
Sergachev-Jokiharju
Romanov-Weber
Norlinder-(Fleury or Juulsen)
Price
Primeau (or Primeau is #1 and Price is #2?)

I think Buffalo and TBay would be willing to pay huge prices to clear up cap and we should take advantage of that.
If Gourde won't waive his NTC than try to O/S Sergachev at 5x$6M
If Okposo won't waive his NTC than we keep Petry and try to move Domi + Oloffson's for Buffalo's first (Rossi)
Assuming we still draft 8th over-all and take Perfetti.
I added Allen for 1 year to give us a reliable back-up so Price only needs to play 50 - 55 games.
I added Thompson for 1 year to give us some experience and depth and to allow Evans to have an extra year in Laval to develop.
Adding the Joker from Buffalo makes Petry expendable IMO.
I would sign Norlinder and bring him to Laval so we have options if Romanov needs more time to develop in Laval. If neither Romanov or Norlinder are ready than Kulak becomes the third pairing Dman.
I would shelter Kotkaniemi for 1 more season with Lehk and Armia.

Leafs and Blues accept fast

The Tampa trade is fair.

The Buffalo trade is pretty bad for Buffalo in my opinion

Okposo is still good in the role he plays overpaid yes, is he the reason why they are bad no. Jokiharju is Buffalo best defensive defenseman and still only 20, while giving up a top 10 pick. I think they would decline.

Leaf don't have enough cap for Petry. And one year of Petry isn't worth a Leafs first. More nonsense about signing a upcoming UFA, as if it has value in a trade.
So why does Gourde waive his NTC to go into the pressure cooker of the Montreal press on a non playoff team?
If I'm a Montreal fan, I hate the idea of 11m wasted on Gourde and Okposo long term instead of better players.

Petry is worth more then that Toronto trade is giving, very easily. Its a late 1st and a AHL player.

A signed UFA has value if the player is extended before the trade. Ex. IF Petry was re-signed for 3 additional years with no trade protection then the Leafs get 4 years of Petry for a 1st and Bracco! Which I believe was the intention of this proposal. So yes Petry for 4 years is definitely worth the proposed package and it actually favors the Leafs slightly.

He isn't worth to the Leafs. 5.5m in cap the Leafs don't have. So the Leafs would have cut another player just to fit him in the roster Petry stats aren't much different than Barrie's, and Barrie was the Leafs worse Dman last year. Again it is this fascination that a middling Dman who happens to shoot right is going to change the Leafs fortunes.. Leafs would be much better to overpay DeMelo as UFA and it certainly won't be anywhere near 5m and keep the pick, than make that trade.

Are you even taking into account how many Scrabble points you get with Olofsson sitting on the triple?
Serious now, to be fair taking Okposo's whole contract does bring quite a negative value on Buffalo's side, he's already overpaid today so imagine two more years down the line.
For the Toronto deal I'd rather take Robertson even if that means Montreal has to add (Retention or picks).

Petry is 32 years now. Do the Leafs really want to extend him til his age 36? And what suggestion do you have for his contract? Plus a love the conversation that the Habs management has with Petry. " We want your ass off our team, so hurry up and sign an extension with the Leafs so we can trade you outta town. By the way, if you can't come to an extension with the Leafs, you are welcome back with the Habs for another year." That's why 99% of these extensions,,,,a. year out just aren't practical. But it's a CapFriendly fixation., can't think of a good trade add the nonsensical extension.

I figured that both the Buffalo and Tampa trades were bad for them but I wonder how badly they need the cap space next year

Considering the Sabres have about 35 million in cap space and only one large contract needed to be signed in Reinhart I think they will be ok cap wise. So no need for them to pay extra in a trade to clear up cap space

I figure with all that's going on in Buffalo with Eichel bad-mouthing the team to the media and them turning around and firing almost every coach as a result of that. That they would be desperate to make Eichel and the fans happy and make an attempt to make the play-offs. So adding Domi I thought would help, and I thought Buffalo was deep enough on the right side to afford to lose the Joker.

Explain the following trades then
Hossa literally signed a 3 year deal during the post-Lockout Free Agency period and was traded the same day for Dany Heatley
Chara
Alex Burrows
Gudbranson
Ryan clowe
Kyle Turris
Dan Boyle

point is it happened all the time.

Yes the Sabres have $35M in cap but they have to sign 8 forwards including Reinhart plus another LD plus a back-up goalie and then carry 3 more spares to bring their roster up to 23 players.
That's 13 contracts to add with a $35M cap.
Then the following year Dahlin will be a RFA hope you have at least $6-7M saved away for that.

Definitely have the money for next year. Johannson 4.5 come off, huttons 2.75 come off and 2.85 from mccabe all comes off. No one outside of Reinhart will be above 5 million AAV being signed. This deal with MTL does not really save the Sabres any cap as Domi will likely get the same or more than Okposo 6 million AAV and Jokiharju is on elc and in discussions for a bridge that will kick in next year likely around 3 million AAV. I would say your projection for a Dahlin contract is quite low. But as far as the 12 contracts they need to add I would say 5 of them would be entry level or lower deals giving you 30 million for the remaining 7. That allows you to average 4.7 million per AAV. Additionally I expect Risto or Montour to be moved taking up one of their higher slotted contracts. If its Risto then that frees an additional 5.4. If its Montour he gets replaced by Borgen at 865,000. Other lower ELC level type contracts on the roster for next year Cozens, Asplund, Thompson, Lazar and Bryson.

This isn't what happened. You need to pay better attention. Said he was sick of losing, endorsed the coach. Fired the idiot GM, the crappy scout staff, and the crappy Rochester coaches who didn't know how to develop players. Eichel isn't going anywhere. Yet.

And Sabres reject the awful deal above and don't bother with a counter.

Thanks for proving my point. Turris, Clowe, Burrows, and Gudbranson were bad signings. Turris, and Burrows for sure were made mid season when the they played on poor teams, and kinda were headed into free agency. My example of a "extended trade" one full season away from UFA rarely happens. It's a bad trade for the Leafs just for cap reasons as I indicated.

It may not happen often but there is precedence, I just do not see any option mentioned above as being a better option than Petry. We know they can't sign Pietrangelo as it would cost another 10+ Mil, Trades could happen but would cost one of the top forwards (Marner, Matthews, Tavares or Nylander) plus the player coming back likely has a higher cap hit than Petry would. Point is The Leafs need Major help on the Right side next season and I don't think Petry can be overlooked as an option.

As I said, there are cheaper UFAs available and then the Leafs keep their pick, and are guaranteed longer term. Again this fantasy that the Leafs and only the Leafs have to give up so much to acquire a middling RHD. Leafs do have options on the right side even with their own players...though some don't shoot right.
Why do the Leafs major help on the right side? Gee, they are losing their two worse Dman last year...Barrie and Ceci, so most any replacement will be better.
Leafs GAA were about the same 15 other teams, so again the fantasy about the Leafs lousy Dmen continues.
If Petry is such a good player, don't the Habs want to this year for a playoff push and extend them for themselves?

I never said I didn't want Petry, I said having Jokiharju would make Petry expendable.
I never meant to offend you with this offer, I figured a first and a low-mid tier prospect was fair for 1 year of Petry.
This trade could be made to another team who sees value in Petry, I choose the Leafs b/c I thought he could slot in on the top pairing there. Sorry

Totally agree.
If Petry has this value, it's not to the Leafs

Maybe Ducks will give a 1st and prospect for him?

Hell no. Our 2020 first is 8th overall or better -- maybe much better -- and we're not going to trade our 2021 first until we see what kind of team we have coming out of training camp later this year.
