The Probable Offseason At This Point

Created by: Bbpagewolf

Description
Over the course of the last several hours, there’s been a lot of chatter that this is what the Rangers offseason would potentially look like. Lundqvist retiring, Fast gone as a UFA, Strome and DeAngelo staying, Andersson, Georgiev and Buchnevich being dealt, and Danault and Dunn coming our way. I can also see Hajek being dealt as part of the Dunn trade and the Rangers getting a 5th rounder back. They would also need to sign a UFA backup goaltender and Talbot returning makes too much sense in my opinion. Strome also moves to the RW with Danault coming in.

St. Louis deal makes a lot of sense and value seems to be pretty good for both sides.

Not sure Montreal needs any wingers, they're looking to add a LD for Danault likely

I mean, we’ll take Buch if you also give us a good pick or a guy like Lundkvist

Why would Hank retire and turn his back on $8,000,000?

Hajek sucks and I'd rather the Blues avoid trading dunn for a goalie when goalies are total voodoo and the only one we've ever had go all the way was on waivers earlier that season.

Why does this deal make sense?

The Blues do not need to trade for a goalie. They’ll either sign a proven backup or let one of the 3 prospects they have be the backup to Binner. Secondly, if we trade Dunn why take a worse replacement? So we get a backup goalie and a bottom pairing defenseman. If the Blues move Dunn...if a huge if...they’ll look t upgrade offensively. They have zero need for goalies or unproven D. Especially with Perunovich, Mikkola and Reinke all looking to make the jump to the NHL this coming year

While you could argue the "deal makes a lot of sense..." the Blues would be trading a 23 y/o stud defenseman who is coming into his prime and an extra draft pick (no chance) for a LHD prospect who may or may not make it and a goalie that likely would get drafted by Seattle. Even if the Blues choose not to protect Binnington and instead protect Georgiev, that would mean they just traded Dunn and a prospect for a prospect and a goalie for one year. No way that happens.

They’re pretty thin on RW and it’s about to get thinner with Suzuki moving to center full time. Buchnevich could become a need for the Habs, plus they get a good prospect as well who doesn’t wanna play for the Rangers. I can see the Habs looking into LD options in free agency.

Out of curiosity, do you see Hofer, Zhrenko or Ellis being able to play in the NHL next year? I was given the impression that they are all still a fair bit away from the NHL but I haven't watched them all that much

None of them are ready. Ellis and Zherenko have a long way to go and I'd say Hofer needs at least another year, depending on where he plays this season. As of rn Ville Husso would be the NHL back up and Evan Fitzpatrick would be the next in line, unless they really see a big step from Hofer. Probably see a move by the Blues for a veteran AHL starter / fringe NHLer soon but looks like Husso gets a real shot at the backup job.

Husso would be the first to get the call. Hofer would be next. He turned a lot of heads in preseason and then once they resumed. He’s got very good instincts but not great lateral quickness. Husso is honestly the guy who everyone thought would take Allen’s job but injuries over the last couple of years derailed that. I think most likely is Armstrong brings back Elliott on a one year deal if not it’ll go Husso then Hofer

I think the goalie will be the last thing addressed depending on the money left after signing Dunn and maybe Petro

Can't see st louis doing that deal. Maybe if they resign the captain and there is just no money left.

... Danault basically said if he's not a top 6 centre then he doesn't wanna play there. & with 1 year left on his deal Montreal will certainly look at moving him to get assets before he walks to free agency

Danault had a 71 game season where he utterly dominated both Suzuki and Kotkaniemi. It's not because he came a bit out of shape to the Covid cup tournament that suddenly he's below them in the depth chart. Childish thinking.

Put Kotkaniemi on the wing until he can do a faceoff without losing 90% of them. Problem solved.

And if we were to trade him, it would be a for a scoring winger.

Uhh, what now? We're not looking for a goalie (obviously), let alone an RFA who will cancel out any possible savings from trading Dunn for garbage Hajek.

Danault said it himself that he wasn't sure about re-signing because of his role. He didn't like that he was pushed to a more defensive role for the younger guys. That's not me making anything up or an opinion. & when a guy says something like that, it sends up red flags about whether to risk keeping him or not. It's smart to move him while he still has value and not lose him for nothing

I'm not sure Fitz has long with the organization. I maybe wrong, but his spot is preventing Hofer from seeing strong professionals.
