I don't get it. He's great, a star for sure, but sometimes I think he's heavily overhyped. 61pts in 68 games is impressive, but compared to how some fans rank him, it's pretty underwhelming.

Svech is great but this year will be the decider on his contract and his worth. Year 1 was good but Year 2 was huge - if he builds on it he’s worth the hype, for now he’s slightly overhyped (his adv stats from this last year are insane tho and he’s great to watch). Can’t say you can blame fans for being excited over him.

He brings so much more than his points totals suggest, even if they are impressive. He's just a terrific playdriver who's only getting better

I know but he's getting top 5-7ish winger convo sometimes, which at the moment is too high.

Tbh I’d rather gamble on taking svech than picking guys like Marner and Laine if I could only have 1. As sevenlegg said

He try’s to drive the offensive play (and usually succeeds) and his points are great and his eye test is amazing too. And if you use ADV stats he’s unreal in a lot of categories. Eye test he passes and is fun to watch and his analytics support his case for being a star. He’s in the top 100th percentile in some of his offensive categories. He’s great for the analytical haters and great for the analytics - he just has to build off his success instead of going stagnant/ plateau

The reason is because he was great out of the gate, unlike many prospects.

maybe he did not get to play a full season so maybe he could of gooten hot and put up over a point per game

I mean, he nearly doubled his point totals from season 1 to season 2 and people expect him to do even more next season. He's only 20 years old and he's looking like he can turn into an 80+ point winger very soon. But yes, if he only puts up around 65 points next season, I think the hype will settle down a bit -- regardless, he's one of the best young, offensive wingers in the game right now.

He's 20 years old and is already one of the best play driving wingers in the NHL. He's got game breaking skill and is equally dangerous as a scorer and passer. In his 2nd NHL season, he was on pace for like 30 goals and 73 points or something. Over the next few seasons he's only going to get better and better.

He's an incredible player and will be a star for years to come but one thing to consider on how a lot of fans evaluate players is based on their fantasy impact. Svechnikov is credited with a lot of shots and hits to go along with his points which makes him very very valuable in some fantasy league formats. It's the same reason there's a huge divide in perception for a player like Rasmus Ristolainen since he's not that great of a player but puts up crazy fantasy league points

Was on pace for 74 points (49 at ES) as a 19 year old. Matthews by comparison had 69 (48 at ES) in 82 and Marner 61 (40 at ES) in 77.

    He is 20

Age 18 point total 41st best ever

Age 19 point total 41st best ever

    Really crazy coincidental but yeah

Also his possession numbers are very good

THIS! He put up these numbers as a teenager in the top men's league in the world. I think people can reasonably project that he will be an ELITE winger by the time he reaches his prime, if not sooner. Plus his work ethic and preparation is unreal.

Rod held him back his 1st year to learn to play defense.

outside of his give-away numbers from last season, his metrics look very good. Im not sure why the question here.

I totally get it. This is exactly what I wonder about all the people putting Pettersson on their "top-5 centers" lists.

yes and that time nobody would have called Marner a top 10 winger even, right? Matthews wouldn't even have been a top 5-10 center on most lists yet either. That's kinda my whole point. Unreal for his age and I have no doubt that he'll be a star, but his current level of production hasn't warranted his current ranking by many fans.

I have no issues with projecting that he will be an elite winger. I'd say he is already. What I'm saying is that people calling him like a top 5 or 7 winger in the league is premature. Just because he's young and good doesn't mean he should currently be ranked over someone who is older but a bit better right now.

you could say that about any player. Nylander could have gotten hot and put up over a point per game, but I'm not gonna try to make the argument that he's a top 7 winger or something

I see people saying he's a top 5 RW or even like top 10 winger, and it makes no sense to me because I'd say the benchmark to make those kind of lists would be at about a point per game production level

I saw loads of fans who put Matthews in the top 5 Cs at that time. Some as high as #3 based on his 40 goals and his 5v5 production and his frequency of producing with Brown and Hyman as wingers. Some people also had Marner absurdly high.

ok but most people didn't. Matthews I thought was top 10, majority disagreed with me. That said I don't think its fair to compare Svech to AM. Marner never cracked top 10 winger lists until his 94 point year.
