This might be the first trade I've seen where both sides really can both be called winners. Avs get a goalie every bit as good as Grubauer, if not better, and the Yotes get yet ANOTHER draft pick (2022 1st rounder) and a good prospect in Timmins.

Remember when new Blackhawks signing Jake McCabe did this to Patrik Laine? Wow.

Well, the Avs really had no choice if they wanted to compete

This is from ProHockeyRumors.com, perfectly put:

The Avalanche can likely afford a price like that, given how many good young defensemen they already have in the organization, but it’s still a lot to pay for a goaltender under contract for just one season. Kuemper will be an unrestricted free agent after earning $4.5MM in 2021-22. There’s obviously a chance he will sign an extension with Colorado, but until he does, the Avalanche are pushing a few important chips to the middle after losing the bidding on Grubauer. During today’s TSN coverage of the trade deadline, Pierre LeBrun explained that Frederik Andersen was Colorado’s backup plan if they couldn’t re-sign Grubauer, but the former Toronto Maple Leafs netminder couldn’t wait and ended up with the Carolina Hurricanes when a strong offer was tabled.

There was really no other option for the Avalanche after the goalie carousel had stopped spinning today. The team needed a strong, experienced option that could potentially help them contend for the Stanley Cup, and those weren’t readily available on free agency or the trade market. Kuemper was the obvious choice, given his strong play over the last few years and overall NHL resume.

In 242 appearances, the 31-year-old netminder has posted a .917 save percentage, including a .922 in his three years with Arizona. He finished fifth and seventh in Vezina voting the two years previous to this season, and recently led Team Canada to a gold medal at the IIHF World Championship.

Predictions?

Pickard re-signed with the Red Wings already. Dubnyk or Korpisalo would be good for the Oilers, if they have the cap room.

Thank you Michael Bunting! Just imagine how they’d look on this model if they’d held onto McCann lol

Georgiev to Buffalo in an Eichel trade, otherwise Dubnyk or maybe getting paid to take on Koskinen. UPL is not ready to play 82 NHL games lmao

Could technically still happen. If the deal is right Dubas could re-acquire McCann but would it be worth it (maybe)

Still waiting as I dont think hes done yet.

Fun fact: The Coyotes pick seven times in the first two rounds alone of the 2022 draft. That's more than double the number of picks than the Leafs had in this year's ENTIRE draft (three).

Ironically Leafs never hold multiple 1sts as often they trade one or both of them

They seem to be allergic to drafting twice in round 1

Like we could have had in 2016 Matthews and Steel, 2015 Marner and Konecney, and so on

Only works if Engvall goes god mode scores 20 goals and has 50 points and Laf continues to struggle or if Chirelli is gm of the rangers wink

Another day, and still Jack Eichel remains a Sabre. I still think he ends up on the Rangers (Kings are out due to cap space, probably the same for the Flames, and reports say the Wild are out too), but according to Bob McKenzie it remains "dead quiet" in talks with all teams.

Toronto Maple Leafs

How much do you hate Mrazek and Bunting, and what did they do to deserve this?

This combined with that article about less players wanting to come to Canada concerns me and applies to all Canadian teams.

NHL needs to figure out how to balance the system cause reality is despite Canadian taxes doing so much good for things such as healthcare. They can be a big deterrent in people wanting to come to any Canadian team in the coming years.

Not a concern now but eventually could get there

Watch this escalate to NHL seperating into two leagues - US and Canadian ones, with the SC winner being decided between the top team in Canada and top team in US.

That would probably require more small market NHL teams migrating to Canada, starting from ARI, CAR, FLA and maybe BUF too.

Add CBJ to that last list.
